Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve - Mosca, Colorado
The tallest sand dunes in North America are located in the San Luis Valley, just west of Colorado's Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The dunes rise as much as 750 feet from the valley floor, making for a challenging hike starting at about 8000 feet elevation.
For this set of pictures I got to the park late in the afternoon and set off on a hike to the top. Early into the hike a sudden storm hit, the blowing sand feeling like sandpaper on my legs. But as soon as it started, the storm ended. I had a mix of clouds and late day sun for the rest of the hike. I watched the sunset before I headed back down.
The park also features mountains with tundra landscape, alpine lakes, the mountains and ancient forests.
The Photos (in order)
N05A0619 - Starting my hike
N05A0624 - A sudden storm pelted me with sand and rain for awhile and then let up just as quickly as it started
N05A0634 - Looking back to where my hike started at the edge of the dunefield
N05A0635 - It's just like hiking up a sand dune at the beach, only this one is about 750 feet tall
N05A0640 - The rolling dunes landscape covers about 30 square miles
N05A0649 - Shortly before sunset, the sun dropped below some clouds near the horizon, its rays illuminating the slope of one of the big dunes
N05A0658 - The warm light of the late day sun shines on the Sangre de Cristo Mountains
N05A0665 - I had just started making my way down when I stopped to watch the setting sun

The Great Sand Dunes are located in the San Juan valley near Mosca, Colorado. The dunes cover about 150,000 acres or 30 square miles.Their base is at approximately 8,170 feet, with the tallest dune (the Star Dune) rising 750 feet from its base to its crest. They are surrounded on one side by the Sangre de Cristo mountain range.
It is roughly about one mile from the parking lot adjoining the dunefield to the top of the first ridge of dunes. A challenging walk through the sand if you are out of shape or not yet acclimatized to the altitude at over 8,000 feet.
The Medano Creek flows around the east side of the dunes. The amount and duration of this creek's flow is determined by the amount of winter snowmelt, and various from the time of year, and from year to year.
Dogs on leash are allowed on the dunes, with owners being responsible for cleaning up any messes they'd leave behind. Note: the temperature of the summer sands can blister paws, cause heat exhaustion, or stroke. Our October visit posed no problems for our pets paws...the ambient temperature was in the mid-to-high 60s.
There are two places at which you can camp with an RV...either within the National Park boundaries at one of their primitive campsites, or at the nearby (about 5 miles away) Sand Dunes Oasis, a privately owned RV Park with full hookups...with an accompanying restaurant (good food, including home made pies!) and gift shop.
We arrived at the dunes on the 3rd of October 2014 after having camped at the Pagosa Springs Riverside RV Park overnight. It's about a 4-hour ride from Pagosa Springs to the dunes...depending upon how fast you drive and the road conditions...and whether or not you're towing a trailer as we were. You'll experience Wolf Creek Pass along the way, traveling through South Park, Del Norte, Center, Hooper, and finally arrive at Mosca, CO where we filled up with gas not knowing whether or not gas would be available at the dunes. The Sand Dunes Oasis does have gas pumps available, so you may not want or need to venture into Mosca.
You can rent sandboards at the Oasis Gift Shop if you are so inclined to go boarding down the dunes!
This video is part 2 of 2 parts. Part 1, the journey from Pagosa Springs to the Dunes can be viewed at this YouTube Link:

ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a YouTube channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, nearly always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and our dogs Zoe and Maggie are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on YouTube, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're weekend warriors just like you!
We'll provide tips and insight on equipping and maintaining your RV, trip planning and travel videos to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

[RV Life & Travel] Southern Colorado || Great Sand Dunes Nat'l Park, Hot Springs, Epic Skies [Ep113]
In this episode we continue our journey south, stopping to visit the incredible Great Sand Dunes National Park. We stay at the San Luis Wildlife State Park -- which is free to stay at, if you have purchased an annual Colorado State Park pass before arriving (We bought ours at a nearby Walmart for $70 but we've heard you can find less expensive ones...) and then spend the night at the most glorious hot springs area. We were delighted by the beauty in this area. Hope you enjoy!
