Sand Boarding and Sand Angels at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Colorado
We spent two nights at Great Sand Dunes Oasis campground near the entrance of Great Sand Dunes National Park. This full hookup campground got us set up with sand boards so we were ready to play in the sand. Josiah loved boarding and went up and down the steep slopes for two hours, each time choosing dunes that were higher and higher. Eleanor loved Medano creek. She splashed in the cool water surges and played in the sand for hours. Our trip wrapped up with some time spent in the visitor center and new junior ranger badges.

Panoramic View from the top. If my 6 year old can make it maybe you can ... the sound is junk because it's all wind up there so ... You will get sand blasted if a storm is rolling in like it was this day. 699' feet from the Visitors Center. If you have a high profile vehicle visit Zapata Falls. Super cool. Camping nearby at San Luis State Park if the Sand Dunes Campgrounds are full. North Americas highest sand dunes.

20141003; Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve
The Great Sand Dunes are located in the San Juan valley near Mosca, Colorado. The dunes cover about 150,000 acres or 30 square miles.Their base is at approximately 8,170 feet, with the tallest dune (the Star Dune) rising 750 feet from its base to its crest. They are surrounded on one side by the Sangre de Cristo mountain range.
It is roughly about one mile from the parking lot adjoining the dunefield to the top of the first ridge of dunes. A challenging walk through the sand if you are out of shape or not yet acclimatized to the altitude at over 8,000 feet.
The Medano Creek flows around the east side of the dunes. The amount and duration of this creek's flow is determined by the amount of winter snowmelt, and various from the time of year, and from year to year.
Dogs on leash are allowed on the dunes, with owners being responsible for cleaning up any messes they'd leave behind. Note: the temperature of the summer sands can blister paws, cause heat exhaustion, or stroke. Our October visit posed no problems for our pets paws...the ambient temperature was in the mid-to-high 60s.
There are two places at which you can camp with an RV...either within the National Park boundaries at one of their primitive campsites, or at the nearby (about 5 miles away) Sand Dunes Oasis, a privately owned RV Park with full hookups...with an accompanying restaurant (good food, including home made pies!) and gift shop.
We arrived at the dunes on the 3rd of October 2014 after having camped at the Pagosa Springs Riverside RV Park overnight. It's about a 4-hour ride from Pagosa Springs to the dunes...depending upon how fast you drive and the road conditions...and whether or not you're towing a trailer as we were. You'll experience Wolf Creek Pass along the way, traveling through South Park, Del Norte, Center, Hooper, and finally arrive at Mosca, CO where we filled up with gas not knowing whether or not gas would be available at the dunes. The Sand Dunes Oasis does have gas pumps available, so you may not want or need to venture into Mosca.
You can rent sandboards at the Oasis Gift Shop if you are so inclined to go boarding down the dunes!

Mojave Desert National Preserve California
A visit to Mojave National Preserve, California. Singing sand dunes, volcanic cinder cones, Joshua tree forests, and carpets of wildflowers are all found at this 1.6 million acre park. A visit to its canyons, mountains and mesas will reveal long-abandoned mines, homesteads, and rock-walled military outposts. Located between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Mojave provides serenity and solitude from major metropolitan areas.
Mojave National Preserve is a United States National Preserve located in the Mojave Desert of San Bernardino County, California, USA, between Interstate 15 and Interstate 40. The preserve was established October 31, 1994 with the passage of the California Desert Protection Act by the US Congress.[3] Previously, it was the East Mojave National Scenic Area, under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management.[4] Mojave National Preserve is vast. At 1,600,000 acres (650,000 ha), it is the third largest unit of the National Park System in the contiguous United States.
Natural features include the Kelso Dunes, the Marl Mountains and the Cima Dome, as well as volcanic formations such as Hole-in-the-Wall and the Cinder Cone Lava Beds. The preserve encloses Providence Mountains State Recreation Area and Mitchell Caverns Natural Preserve, which are both managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation.
Impressive Joshua Tree forests cover parts of the preserve. The Cima Dome and Shadow Valley forests are the largest in the world.[5] The defunct railroad depot and ghost town of Kelso are also found there. The depot is now the visitor center. The preserve is commonly traversed by 4 wheel drive vehicles traveling on the historic Mojave Road.
The climate varies greatly. Summer temperatures average 90 °F (32 °C), with highs exceeding 105 °F (41 °C). Elevations in the Preserve range from 7,929 feet (2,417 m) at Clark Mountain to 880 feet (270 m) near Baker. Annual precipitation varies from 3.37 inches (86 mm) near Baker, to almost 9 inches (230 mm) in the mountains. At least 25% of precipitation comes from summer thunderstorms. Snow is often found in the mountains during the winter.

SUMMARY
=======
Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is an American national park that conserves an area of large sand dunes up to 750 feet (229 m) tall on the eastern edge of the San Luis Valley, and an adjacent national preserve located in the Sangre de Cristo Range, in south-central Colorado, United States. The park was originally designated Great Sand Dunes National Monument on March 17, 1932 by President Herbert Hoover. The original boundaries protected an area of 35,528 acres (55.5 sq mi; 143.8 km2). A boundary change and redesignation as a national park and preserve was authorized on November 22, 2000 and then established by an act of Congress on September 24, 2004. The park encompasses 107,342 acres (167.7 sq mi; 434.4 km2) while the preserve protects an additional 41,686 acres (65.1 sq mi; 168.7 km2) for a total of 149,028 acres (232.9 sq mi; 603.1 km2). The recreational visitor total was 486,935 in 2017, about 25% more than the 388,308 visitors of 2016.The park contains the tallest sand dunes in North America. The dunes cover an area of about 30 sq mi (78 km2) and are estimated to contain over 5 billion cubic meters of sand. Sediments from the surrounding mountains filled the valley over geologic time periods. After lakes within the valley receded, exposed sand was blown by the predominant southwest winds toward the Sangre de Cristos, eventually forming the dunefield over an estimated tens of thousands of years. The four primary components of the Great Sand Dunes system are the mountain watershed, the dunefield, the sand sheet, and the sabkha. Ecosystems within the mountain watershed include alpine tundra, subalpine forests, montane woodlands, and riparian zones.Evidence of human habitation in the San Luis Valley dates back about 11,000 years. The first historic peoples to inhabit the area were the Southern Ute Tribe, while Apaches and Navajo also have cultural connections in the dunes area. In the late 17th century, Don Diego de Vargas—a Spanish governor of Santa Fe de Nuevo México—became the first European on record to enter the San Luis Valley. Juan Bautista de Anza, Zebulon Pike, John C. Frémont, and John Gunnison all travelled through and explored parts of the region in the 18th and 19th centuries. The explorers were soon followed by settlers who ranched, farmed and mined in the valley starting in the late 19th century. The park was first established as a national monument in 1932 to protect it from gold mining and the potential of a concrete manufacturing business.Visitors must walk across the wide and shallow Medano Creek to reach the dunes in spring and summer months. The creek typically has a peak flow from late May to early June in most years. From July through April, the creek is usually no more than a few inches deep, if there is any water at all. Hiking is permitted throughout the dunes with the warning that the sand surface temperature may reach 150 °F (66 °C) in summer. Sandboarding and sandsledding are popular activities, both done on specially designed equipment which can be rented just outside the park entrance or in Alamosa. Visitors with street-legal four-wheel drive vehicles may continue past the end of the park's main road to Medano Pass on 22 miles (35 km) of unpaved road, crossing the stream bed of Medano Creek nine times and traversing 4 miles (6.4 km) of deep sand. Hunting is permitted in the preserve during the months of autumn, while hunting is prohibited within national park boundaries at all times. The preserve encompasses nearly all of the mountainou ...
Sand Boarding | Bruneau Sand Dunes (Idaho)
Bruneau Dunes State Park in South West Idaho is the tallest single-structured sand dune in North America, rising 470 feet high above the small lakes below. What should you do with such a tall hill of sand? Race down it of course! This dune has been a popular spot for sand sledding, but now you can rent special sand boards and sand sleds at the park to race your buddies with. The park makes for a great day trip from Boise being only around an hour away. Or stay the night in the well managed campground or RV park and stargaze at the observatory! There’s also fishing, hiking and nature walks in the park, but really the thing to do at Bruneau Dunes is sand boarding! Old man Chad didn’t have the balance for a board so he opted for the sled while I opted for the young man’s device. Who will win in our race for bragging rights around the office, Chad and his sled or Jon with his board!

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a United States National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site that straddles the ridgeline of the Great Smoky Mountains, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which are a division of the larger Appalachian Mountain chain. The border between Tennessee and North Carolina runs northeast to southwest through the centerline of the park. It is the most visited national park in the United States. On its route from Maine to Georgia, the Appalachian Trail also passes through the center of the park. It encompasses 522,419 acres (816.28 sq mi; 211,415.47 ha; 2,114.15 km2), making it one of the largest protected areas in the eastern United States. The main park entrances are located along U.S. Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) at the towns of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and Cherokee, North Carolina. It was the first national park whose land and other costs were paid for in part with federal funds; previous parks were funded wholly with state money or private funds.
Shenandoah National Park encompasses part of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the U.S. state of Virginia. This national park is long and narrow, with the broad Shenandoah River and Valley on the west side, and the rolling hills of the Virginia Piedmont on the east. Although the scenic Skyline Drive is likely the most prominent feature of the park, almost 40% of the land area 79,579 acres (124.342 sq mi; 32,204 ha; 322.04 km2) has been designated as wilderness and is protected as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. The highest peak is Hawksbill Mountain at 4,051 feet (1,235 m).
Arches National Park is a US National Park in eastern Utah. The park is located on the Colorado River 4 miles (6 km) north of Moab, Utah. It is known for containing over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations. The park is located just outside of Moab, Utah, and is 76,679 acres (119.811 sq mi; 31,031 ha; 310.31 km2) in area. Its highest elevation is 5,653 feet (1,723 m) at Elephant Butte, and its lowest elevation is 4,085 feet (1,245 m) at the visitor center. Forty-three arches are known to have collapsed since 1977. The park receives 10 inches (250 mm) of rain a year on average.
Administered by the National Park Service, the area was originally named a National Monument on April 12, 1929. It was redesignated as a National Park on November 12, 1971.

Frozen Indiana Dunes Park After The Polar Vortex Travel
4K Aerial Footage of a Frozen Indiana Dunes National After The Polar Vortex
Indiana Dunes consists of 2,182 acres of primitive, beautiful, historic and unique Hoosier landscape. It lies at the north end of State Road 49 in Porter County, and includes more than three miles of beautiful beach along Lake Michigan’s southern shore. In the early 1900s scientists, recreationists and nature enthusiasts, recognizing the value and potential of the Indiana dunes area, fought to have the region preserved. As a result, in 1925, the state park was established.
Large sand dunes, located beyond the entire shoreline, have taken thousands of years to form, and tower nearly 200 feet above Lake Michigan. A wide range of habitats and plant species are found in the park, with vegetation stabilizing some of the sand. These habitats provide homes for many types of plants and animals. The lake also provides habitat for many aquatic species, as well as a constantly changing fishery.
During the summer, swimming hours may change because of weather and staffing. Please contact the property office for exact times before your visit.

The preserve encompasses nearly all of the mountainous areas north ...
