Great Southwest Adventure: Day 3: Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and Alamogordo, NM
In April of 2017, we decided to take a road trip through New Mexico and Texas. Here is a few clips of what we did on day three of our trip. We spent most of the day driving and visiting Albuquerque. We enjoyed The National Museum of Nuclear Science and History, shopped at Old Town Albuquerque, had lunch at the Guava Tree Cafe, and had dinner at Range Cafe.
Read our blog post about what we did here:
Kapp's Kitchen is a cottage bakery located in Corinth, TX specializing in small batch gourmet cookies, scones, and various types of bread.

Amtrak's Southwest Chief: Chicago to Los Angeles
Come along with us as we climb aboard Amtrak’s Southwest Chief for an amazing, 3-day adventure across America. Beginning in Chicago, Illinois, our train will take us over 2,200 miles to Los Angeles, California, on the former route of Santa Fe’s Super Chief streamliner. From Illinois farm country, transitioning to Kansas prairie, we thunder across Colorado, and head over the Rocky Mountains on the steep grades of Raton Pass. Then it’s down through New Mexico on scenic tracks that today are only used by Amtrak. Seemingly frozen in time are relics from Santa Fe’s heyday, including semaphore signals and long stretches of jointed rail, as we pass the historic landmarks of Wagon Mound, Glorieta Pass, and Apache Canyon. Soon we make it to California, running over Cajon Pass before making our grand entrance into famous Los Angeles Union Station.
With vantage points inside the train and along the tracks, I captured the entire experience on the Southwest Chief, carefully edited from hours of footage over more than a year of filming. I hope you enjoy this video!
The adventure continues in California - be sure to check out my other videos documenting trains in the Los Angeles area:

This morning you head south, down to Albuquerque, New Mexico’s largest city, with a third of the state’s population. Albuquerque is sprawling at the heart of New Mexico, where the main east - west road and rail routes cross both the Rio Grande and the old road south to Mexico. You cross the Rio Grande and head west – out into the open country and the hues of the Navajo wilderness. You are skirting mesas and bluffs on into Laguna. Further on ride through Grants and along Cibola National Forest towards the famous Route 66 town of Gallup – an old railroad town and Indian stronghold. Enjoy your stay tonight with a host of fellow riders from around the world at one of the many biker friendly hotels in Gallup.

Route 66: Day 7 & 8 (Amarillo, TX - Santa Fe, NM)
Full Route 66 Tour:
Route 66, Day 7:
Today you leave Texas and are on your way into “The Land of Enchantment”, New Mexico – after passing through the world famous Cadillac Ranch. How about the ghost town of Glen Rio, where you can stand with one foot in New Mexico and the other one in Texas? From there we enter the land the Comanche Indians, where mesas, mountains, cactus and pines define the landscape as head up into the High Plains and altitude of Santa Fe in central New Mexico. Santa Fe is one of America’s oldest and most beautiful cities, and will be our base for the next two nights.
Route 66, Day 8:
Today is at leisure to rest and enjoy the distinctive flavor of this nearly 400-year-old city. The blend of cultures here becomes evident in the southwestern architectural style so closely associated with New Mexico’s capital city. Perhaps you would like to take a ride along the river valley to the old Native American Indian town of Taos, enjoy a sunrise hot air balloon ride, or play cowboy for a day on a horseback ride along a mountain or canyon trail. Santa Fe provides all of these opportunities and more.

Thunderbird - The Southwest
This is a great song by Hans Zimmer. Well, almost. Sometimes you find a song and you love all but a few little parts of it and you're like why, oh why did it have to end that way? Or why is there that one section in the middle???
So I went to work on it with my digital scissors and tape. Snip, snip, a little cut here and there, a little rearranging and layering and messing around and soon I had a version of the song I was a lot happier with. It's still very obviously Hans Zimmer's song. It's just slightly rearranged. I definitely do not think of it as my own, I am merely an arranger here. The same way some people arrange songs for music books.
This song makes me think of all the road trips I've taken through the American Southwest. California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Texas. The Grand Canyon, Kanab, Zion, Marble Canyon, White Sands, Chiricahua, The Coral Dunes, Guadalupe Mountains, Joshua Tree, The Lancaster Poppy Reserve, Valley of Fire... Yes, all the photos here are from my own collection.
Truly beautiful places right in my own backyard. It feels like this song was made for these landscapes, that these landscapes inspired and moved Hans Zimmer so deeply that he proceed to write this song. Just watch it and you'll see (feel) what I mean.
Enjoy.
