The city of #Anchorage lies in Alaska’s mountainous south and is home to around 40 percent of all Alaskans. At the height of summer, Anchorage basks in 22 hours of sunlight, with the sun barely dipping below the horizon, making it an excellent #vacation destination for those looking to pack a lot into their trip.
#Explore the Flattop Mountain trails which serve up some of the best views in the state. Learn the traditional dances and games of Alaska’s first peoples at the Alaska Native Heritage Centre or stock up on stories and folklore from the Last Frontier at the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Centre. Hang out at the dock at Seward, a picturesque fishing outpost or set sail to the Kenai Fjords National Park. Marvel as deep-sea giants breach the surface of these still waters. Climb aboard a seaplane or helicopter and soar from Seward out to the Godwin Glacier.
Alaska is a state famous for its rugged terrain and endless recreational opportunities, and a vacation Anchorage does not disappoint.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Alaska Story Time with Aunt Phil, Alaska's Glacier Pilot, Aug. 20, 2018
Legendary Alaska pilot Robert Bob Campbell Reeve, commonly known in Alaska as the Glacier Pilot, is the subject of this segment of Alaska Story Time with Aunt Phil. This episode first aired on Anchorage CBS affiliate KTVA Channel 11 Daybreak on Aug. 20, 2018.
One of Alaska’s most respected bush pilots died this week 38 years ago. Robert “Bob” Campbell Reeve, known by many as the Glacier Pilot, passed away in his sleep on Aug. 25, 1980.
Reeve may be best known for building a successful airline that bore his name. Reeve Aleutian Airways served Alaskans for more than half a century.
The Wisconsin native had become intrigued with Alaska after hearing stories about the north while flying in South America. After a brief visit in the states, and a bout with polio that bothered one leg for years, he stowed away on a steamship in 1932 with only a few cents in his pocket.
He first arrived in Anchorage, but found too many pilots were in town, so he moved on to Prince William Sound. A chance encounter with Valdez aviator Owen Meals started Reeve down his long and distinguished career in Alaska’s skies.
Meals had just crashed his single-engine biplane and Reeve, one of the nation’s first certified airplane mechanics, repaired it. Reeve then leased the plane, cleared an airstrip in a cow pasture and began a charter business.
His 2,000-plus glacier landings earned him the nickname Glacier Pilot. After starting his charter business, Reeve spent the next 15 years flying as a bush pilot around the Great Land. Along with his many glacier and ice field landings, he also pioneered new flight routes to get to hard-to-reach mines and developed a method for landing on mud flats with skis.
He bought his first plane, a Fairchild 51, in the winter of 1932. Four years later he bought a Fairchild 71. After moving to Anchorage in 1942, he winged his way across Alaska, the Aleutians and Western Canada while under contract with the military. Following the end of WW11 Reeve bought a surplus DC-3 C-47, converted it to civilian use and birthed Reeve Aleutian Airways Inc. to serve the people of the Aleutian Chain.
The bush pilot’s airline grew during the 1950s-60s and soon DC-3s, DC-4s and other types of aircraft were added to the fleet. He turned the business over to his son, Richard, in 1978 and the company entered the jet age. But competition and deregulation spelled the end of the family business in 2001.
The Glacier Pilot died in his sleep on August 25, 1980, and was inducted into the Alaska Aviation Pioneer Hall of Fame in 2005.

ALASKA (4K)
The name Alaska was introduced in the Russian colonial period when it was used to refer to the peninsula. It was derived from an Aleut, or Unangam (the indigenous people of the Aleutian Islands of Alaska) idiom, which symbolically refers to the mainland or shore of Alaska. Figuratively, it means object to which the action of the sea is directed. It is also known as Alyeska, the great land, an Aleut word derived from the same root.

RVing to Alaska | Fummins family farmers | Visiting family up in Alaska
Feed the llamas, collect eggs, water the chickens, and clean the rabbit cages….these were things I'd tell the kids on a daily basis before traveling. Fortunately for the younger four kids they didn't have to listen to me nag them every day about doing farm chores. But unfortunately for them, they didn't have much of a chance to live on a farm. We didn't have a large farm, just a small hobby farm. Llamas, chickens, turkeys, peacocks, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, chinchillas, fish, turtles, frogs, doves and a dozen more animals have lived with us throughout the years, but most of that was before they younger kids were around. These kids are definitely experiencing a different life than their older siblings. So while I do miss gardening and farm life, traveling has been a great experience too.
While traveling through Alaska we stopped to visit an aunt that I hadn't seen since I was the same age as the kids are now. But it's good to know that they will always have happy childhood memories of her just as I did.
We helped her clean out the dog kennels, feed, water and brush the dogs, put together a kennel, put up an electric fence for the horses and clean logs and branches out of the horse pasture. And of course, we got to enjoy our day having some fun with the animals. We got to run around with a baby horse, feed a bearded dragon, and play with the dogs. At the end of the day the kids all got to go for a ride on the four wheeler. Not much could make a boy happier.
It was an enjoyable day and it reminded me how much I enjoy spending time with animals, but also how much work they are. So for now, we'll enjoy our time traveling without any animals, but when we get the chance to work for a day on someone else's farm, we won't turn it down.

The Great State of Alaska was a Russian Colony known as Russian America from 1774 until the US finalized the purchase in 1867. After the Crimean (Krimeen) War in 1853, Russia was short on cash so they sold Russian America believing the land contained no useful resources. The Russian Emperor, Alexander II, chose to sell to the United States instead of Canada, in fear of the land being seized by Britain if war broke out.
William Henry Seward, secretary of state under President Andrew Johnson, campaigned for the 586,412 Square miles of Russian America, about twice the size of TEXAS. The American people believed the land was barren, and labeled the purchase Seward’s folly.
The sale finalized on October 18,1867 for $7.2 million, was less than 2 cents an acre.
Public opinion changed when Gold was discovered in the Klondike River in 1896 sparking the gold rush.
Alaska became the 49th state Jan 3, 1959, now recognized for its vast natural resources. More than one third of Alaskan jobs are tied to the gas and oil industry and over 50% of seafood come from Alaska.
Alaska is the largest state about one fifth the size of the lower states combined. The name
ALASKA is derived from the Aliut word Alyeska which means Great Land. Alaska has two official state holidays to commemorate its origins.
Seward’s Day observed the last monday in March celebrates March 30th 1867, the day the land treaty of the US was signed. Then Alaska Day, October 18, marks the formal land transfer from Russia to the United States in 1867. Stay with us at or call 907-746-2225 and see the beauty for yourself!

Alaska Salmon Country - Sockeye City
The sheer volume of salmon that return to Bristol Bay each year is truly astounding. For those who haven't visited Alaska, it's really hard to conceptualize 32 million fish - the average sockeye return in Bristol Bay. This video gives a glimpse of the bio mass that enter the rivers and streams that make up the Bristol Bay watershed. Filmed exclusively in 2015 on the Copper River with Copper River Lodge.
