MINOA - a Minoan ship reconstruction in Chania, Crete, Greece - ΧΑΝΙΑ ΚΡΗΤΗ

Minoa is a scientific reconstruction of an ancient Minoan vessel from around 1500 BC. Ships like these sailed in the Aegean Sea at the peak of the Minoan period, connecting the Greek islands and the mainland in the Bronze age. The hull is neither carvel nor lapstrake, but a special shell-first construction that used ropes to pull the strakes together. The rig is a square sail with a special net of thin ropes that hangs in front of the sail fabric to ease the strain on the fabric. Similar cross patterns can also be observed on 2000 years younger rune stones from Sweden, depicting Viking ships. The Athens War Museum (Greek: Πολεμικό Μουσείο), established on July 18, 1975, is the museum of the Greek Armed Forces. Its purpose is the exhibition of weapon artifacts and the relevant research in the history of war. It covers the history of war in all ages. The museums' collections include the collection of the Greek Army, with artifacts from other civilizations such as Ancient China and Ancient Japan.In 1964, the Hellenic State decided to found the War Museum, wishing to honor all those who fought for Greece and its freedom. The design of the museum was undertaken by a team of distinguished scientists, headed by Professor Thoukidides Valentis of the National Technical university of Athens (N.T.U.A). On July 18, 1975, the President of the Hellenic Republic H.E. Constantine Tsatsos and the Minister of National Defense Evangelos Averoff-Tositsas inaugurated the Museum. Its various activities include the publication of books, the establishment and maintenance of monuments and memorials and the aid to services and agencies all over Greece. The Museum’s exhibition areas are distributed over four levels (floors) and present images of Greek history from antiquity to the present.The museum's centerpieces are weaponry from wars in which Greece was involved.

The War Museum has established Museum Branches at the cities of Nauplion (Peloponnese) (1988), Chania (Crete) (1995), Tripoli (Peloponnese) (1997) and Thessaloniki (2000). After building the Hellenic Air Force Museum, some airplanes were brought to this museum.

Part 4: After flying to Chania on the island of Crete, we rent a car and drive out to the stunning beach known as Satan’s Porch. We decided not to hike down, but, instead, spent some time up on the ridge looking down and hanging with the local sheep. Then we drove into town to experience the hell of trying to find parking in Old Town. Nerves were settled with beer and octopus at Pallas, followed by walking out to the old light house at the end of the jetty in the Venetian Harbor. The evening is highlighted by a stop at the Greek National Football Museum and a taste of Cretan Brewery’s Charma at a little cafe called Filira Bistro.

7- GANYMEDE with ZEUS/JUPITER. In an aggressive stance, the eagle is drinking Nectar served by a frail submissive pretty boy, Ganymede! Zeus, (Erastes: lover)in his paed-erastic (boy-loving) moments saw a Frygian (Turkish) child and downed on him, in Asia Minor, as an eagle, and made him his eromenos (loveboy) with the title The Cup Bearer, to serve drinks to the Olympian Gods. Later, Zeus paid the parents handsomely, and placed the boy as a star in heaven.
For some, this represents the Greek invasion of Asia Minor. Others say it is a consecration of pedophilia, an adult's relationship with a boy, caring for his education and upbringing against sexual favours!

8- Ganymede the cup bearer: See 7! Here he is represented in 2 versions, a & b. One holding the cup, the other pouring carefully the precious drink!
9- HERMes/MERCury: The God of many talents: The messenger of gods, thus the protector of Postmen, and travel agencies! The go-between lovers, a procurer, a pimp! The god of MERChants, MERChandisers, sales people, Marketing Executives, Business Schools. As a baby he stole the cattle of his brother Apollo, hiding his tracks not to be discovered, stole Poseidon/Neptune's Trident, the dress of Aphrodite/Venus to pass as a woman, or gay, and consequently he is the god of thieves too. A HERME, a guide and path finder, a distance runner. He is a polyglot, speaks many languages, and therefore god of rhetoricians, lawyers, liars and translators (HERMEneutics: interpretation of sacred texts). Often represented as a road stone with an erected phallos, a Babylonian Fertility god, and therefore the god of marriage and family. As a harp player he is the Patron of Artists. As the creator of fire, he is the friend of Mankind. As the inventor of DICE, he is the god of Gamblers.
Here, in short: Hera discovers Zeus (her husband) is having an affair (one of many) with Io, one of her priestesses, and in jealousy turned her into a cow. She puts her servant Argos, a monster with eyes all over his body, to keep an eye on the poor cow, in case Zeus should sire her as a bull. Zeus asks Hermes/Mercury to get rid of this guardian. Mercury, a good player and inventor of the Harp plays tunes that make Argos close one eye after the other. In this very moment, see Mercury pulling his sword, he will kill the poor monster!
10- HERAKLES/HERCULES: When you read the Epic of Gilgamesh, you'll understand Herakles was a Babylonian god imported to Greece, as well as how the myths of Noah's arch and the deluge suddenly found their way into the Bible.
Being the bastard of Zeus, Herakles is hated by Hera, and subjugated to many experiences before becoming HERA-Kles, the glory of Hera, and made a god. When just born, he strangulates, with his bare baby hands, the poisonous snakes that Hera had placed in his cradle to get rid of him. In the 12 labours he has to go through, he kills the Nemean Lion with his bare hands, skins it and wears the skin, that with his club becomes his brand image. 11- The 3 GRACES. Latin of the Greek Charites, (Xaris: gr. charm & elegance)! Up to 9 but most often only 3, Aglaya (splendid), Euphorosyn (playul & happy), and Thalia (cheerful). Priesteses of Aphrodite/Venus, they dance in circle around her under the spell of Apollos music making, here played by Eros. In 2 vers., a&b, discussing LOVE!
12- EROS/AMOR. Vers. a&b. He may be the oldest of all gods, the creator of the world. Before him was nothing, no one. These 2 vesions represent him triumphing over all other gods, Apollo (Harp), Ares/Mars (helmet), Herakles (lion-skin), Zeus (thunderbolt), Dionysos/Bacchus, winestaff. Euuuuh LOVE WINS THEM ALL!

Ancient Kyrenia Ship 1of6 Αρχαίο καράβι της Κερύνειας

Underwater Scenes showing the location of the underwater wreck, with divers salvaging items.

Scenes are seen of Kyrenia Harbour and town.

Andreas Kariolou, who had found the wreck just offshore of the town of Kyrenia is shown, explaining how he had spotted the plentiful amphorae at the location - explains how he came to find it.

Michael Katsev, of the University of Pennsylvania, shown against a backdrop of Kyrenia harbour explains that he had been invited during 1967 to search the shores of Cyprus for possible shipwrecks by the Director of the Department of Antiquities, Dr Vassos Karageorgis.

Andreas Kariolou's boat is shown at Kyrenia harbour, and he is sheen meeting Dr Katsev and his wife.

The large team of volunteer divers who arrived in Kyrenia during 1968 to begin the salvage operation is also show, Mr Kariolou's boat and the pontoon used during the diving operations are seen offshore from the port and castle of Kyrenia. Divers are seen preparing their diving equipment.

Το 1967, μετά από πρόσκληση του Τμήματος Αρχαιοτήτων, ήλθε στην Κύπρο μια διεθνής επιστημονική αποστολή με ειδίκευση στη θαλάσσια αρχαιολογία, επί κεφαλής της οποίας βρισκόταν ο Αμερικανός αρχαιολόγος Michael Katzev.

Το ναυάγιο, αποτελεί το παλαιότερο καλύτερα διατηρημένο στον κόσμο ξύλινο εμπορικό πλοίο που έχει βρεθεί στο βυθό. Το ναυάγιο ανακάλυψε ο Κερυνειώτης αυτοδύτης Ανδρέας Καριόλου το 1965 στη θάλασσα της Κερύνειας, σε βάθος 30 μέτρων περίπου. Αρχικά ο Καριόλου εντόπισε αρχαίους αμφορείς, που αποτελούσαν μέρος του φορτίου του πλοίου.

Chania (Greek: Χανιά, [xaˈɲa], Venetian: Canea, Ottoman Turkish: خانيه Hanya) is the second largest city of Crete and the capital of the Chania regional unit. It lies along the north coast of the island, about 70 km (43 mi) west of Rethymno and 145 km (90 mi) west of Heraklion.
The official population of the municipal unit (the former municipality) is 53,910, while the municipality has 108,642 (2011) inhabitants. This consists of the city of Chania and several other towns and villages, including Kounoupidiana (pop. 8,620), Mournies (pop. 7,614), Souda (pop. 6,418), Nerokouros (pop. 5,531), Daratsos (pop. 4,732), Perivolia (pop. 3,986), Galatas (pop. 3,166) and Aroni (pop. 3,003).

Maria Stavropoulou is a lawyer working on migration and refugee issues since 1990. From 1990 until 2011 she worked for the United Nations in Athens, Geneva, New York and other countries. Until August 2011 she was working as senior regional protection officer at UNHCR’s Regional Representation in Rome. She has taught on asylum and refugee issues at the National Center for Public Administration of Greece, the National School of Judges and the Police Academy. Ms. Stavropoulou has an LL.M. degree on human rights and asylum from Harvard Law School and and LL.M. degree on European Law from the University College London. She has graduated from the Legal Department of the Athens Law School, where she is a Ph.D. candidate.
