Winter Destination: The Easiest Way to CRUISE in GREECE, Day tour at HYDRA, POROS & AEGINA
While we were in Athens, Ruth and I decided to book an island tour cruise via Klook.
Since Mykonos and Santorini are not recommended destinations during Winter, we thought of visiting the other Greek Islands like Aegina, Poros, and Hydra which is considered one of the most beautiful islands in Greece.
We were delighted when we learned that they are open on January 2nd (for some were still on a holiday break).
In this vlog, we will give you a peek on what it is like to do a day tour in these Saronic Islands.

Athens Tour Taxi Driver
Meet Yannis Varsakis (or is it Tom Cruise), our tour taxi driver while we were in Athens, Greece.
Very knowledgeable about the history of Athens and Greece as well as a great guide as to the best places to see.
From Athens to Thessaloniki by train
You can easily travel from the Greece capital Athens in the South to the 2nd largest city Thessaloniki by train.
Depending on the chosen train and connection, the journey of 500km can last between 4 - 6 hours.
It is advisable to purchase tickets upfront to avoid the risk that the train might be sold out.
Tickets can be ordered at the counter window at the main station or online.
A ticket purchase a few days before the planned start of the trip is recommended because the route is very busy and places are quickly sold out.
Especially in the high season (June-August), when a particularly large number of Interrail ticket holders are on the move and come to Athens from Italy and the Greek islands to travel further north.
The single trip is available from € 35. If you book a return trip together, there is a discount of approx. 10% on the total price. In addition to the regular InterCity trains, there is also a night train on the route.
In return, the prices are very moderate and the selection is relatively large. The older furniture set is charming, but has the disadvantage that the jerky sections of the route, some of which exist, can surprise the seated person with spontaneous movements of his chair. However, the already relaxed cruising speed is throttled again on these sections in order not to give rise to involuntary fairground experiences

Day Trip From Athens to Cape Sounion to See The Temple of Poseidon + Amazing Greek Food in Lavrion
We decided to take a family day trip from Athens to Cape Sounion, which is about a 1 hour drive from the Greek capital. Located at the southernmost tip of Attica, Cape Sounion (sometimes also called Cape Sounio) houses the Ancient Greek Temple of Poseidon. This is a great activity for those who want to escape and the hustle and bustle of Athens on a hot day, and just a fun and accessible activity for families in general.
Perched on the promontory of Cape Sounion, the Temple of Poseidon towers over the endless Aegean Sea with its seemingly infinite islands. It offers some of the most amazing views in the world, I don't believe my video does it justice in that department: we were truly left in awe by the amazing view here!
After visiting Cape Sounion on a blazing hot summer day, we were left starving. We asked our driver to find us a great spot for some delicious traditional Greek Food, and he brought us to the port city of Lavrion (Also known as Lavriou or Laurium), which used to be the ancient silver mine of the Athenians. There we ate at this small, understated yet beckoning restaurant called Psarou.
Wow! The meal was incredible!
They served up some amazing Greek Food, including one of the best grilled fish meals we ate in Greece. It was also great since it was really, really hot that day and a lot of the restaurants by the beach were over-crowded and didn't offer AC. With kids, especially one that was turning a little red, this was just perfect! Other travelling families will know just what I'm talking about... ;)
Hope you enjoyed watching and don't forget to hit the subscribe button for more family-oriented travel videos!
Side note: Robyn forgot her purse with many important documents and our credit cards at the restaurant. I want to give a huge shout out to PK Travel who went made the 1 hour drive later that evening from Athens and back to get it for her. Their customer service was so exceptional it left us emotional, they really went the extra mile for us (some pun intended) and this is by no means an ad for them. Give them a shout if you're ever in Athens and need to get around, here's their link:

About us: We are Daniel, Robyn, Ava, Rose and Ella, and together we are The Go To Family. We love to travel! We also love food, exploring historical sites and, of course, doing loads of fun things together as a family.
In our videos, you will see me and Robyn tackle every obstacle that traveling with kids throws at us. We do traveling almost exactly the same way we did before having kids, it just takes a little bit more planning these days. The result, however, is simply more fun! It's also very rewarding to be able to show the kids new cultures and live new experiences with them at the same time. Our mission is to inspire other Millennials to travel with kids.
Our 7-year-old daughter, Ava, also has her own YouTube channel. Feel free to check it out right here:

Athens (Greece) Travel - Public Transportation
Birgit shows you the best transport options from Athens to Greek Islands.
Most visitors in Greece visit the islands from Athens. Piraeus Harbor in Athens is really the hub, where are all boats and ferries take off to the islands. I will show you how to get to Piraeus from within Athens. Although you can take a taxi from anywhere within the city, the local metro is a more popular option, and a better choice. It is efficient, cheaper, and faster. You identify a train station by this sign. We will take off from the Syntagma Station. Syntagma Square is located in Central Athens, right next to the Parliament Building. We started on the blue line at Syntagma, heading towards Egaleo, and switched to the green line a Monastiraki, heading toward Piraeus, our final destination.
Buying a ticket is easy. You can buy a single fare ticket like I'm gonna buy now, or a 90 minute ticket, which includes transfers on public bus transportation. You validate your ticket here. Trains run every couple of minutes, and they start at 6 in the morning. You'll find maps in the metro station, and on the train. Make sure to hold onto your ticket for your entire journey. Give yourself an hour to get to the port. As you can see, the port is really big. There is a free bus inside of the port, that allows you to get to the further places faster. It is wise to buy your tickets a couple days in advance. But the boating schedules are subject to change. So confirm with the local newspaper the day of your departure. You can buy tickets from different boat companies along this road. I am Birgit, showing you Athens.
