Greeley: So Much More
Located between the majestic Rocky Mountains and the open plains of Colorado, Greeley is a thriving community and our abundant natural resources and strong educational assets are helping us grow in the 21st century.
Students Bring History to Life at Centennial Village
Many District 6 schools participated in the Young Chautauqua this morning at Centennial Village Museum. Students brought history to life by immersing themselves in the writings and lives of historical characters. Our District 6 students selected an inspiring person in history who possesses the qualities and values that they can identify with in their own life. Each student researched the character of their choice and portrayed them in front of an audience of their peers.
Colorado's Most Endangered Mall
You may remember my visit to Greeley, CO to investigate Denver's Brown Cloud. While in gorgeous Greeley, I also stopped to take a peek at this dated indoor mall on its deathbed.
Once the most glorious shopping center in the region, the Greeley Mall lost 40% of its anchor tenants in 2008 (Dillard's) and is about 50% vacant today. Could this be your last chance to see the Greeley Mall?
This footage was shot during the 2014 holiday season (notice the fabulous decorations).

2005 - Greeley POW Camp
Two stone pillars along the business loop of U.S. Highway 34 west of Greeley are all that remain of what was once a 320 acre World War II prisoner-of-war camp. The camp was significant to the history of many communities in northeastern Colorado because German and Italian inmates, many of whom spoke English, were allowed to work for local farmers, filling job openings created by U.S. servicemen sent to war. The prisoners developed congenial relationships with local U.S. residents, many of whom spoke German and were of German descent. When the war ended, some of the prisoners settled in northern Colorado. Others, and their descendants, still make pilgrimages from Europe to visit the site.
Populated by more than 3,000 German and Austrian prisoners captured while serving under General Rommel in North Africa, P.O.W. Camp 202 was a 302-acre World War II prisoner-of-war camp built in the 1940’s nearly Greeley. The camp closed in 1946, and by the time the site was selected as one of Colorado’s Most Endangered Places in2005, the only remains were two stone entrance gate pillars located adjacent to a farm field along the business loop of U.S. Highway 34, west of Greeley.
The pillars were threatened in 2005 when the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) began a highway expansion project for Highway 34. Fearing the loss of the only remains of P.O.W. Camp 202, a preservation campaign that included Colorado Preservation, Inc., The City of Greeley, Historic Greeley and the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was started to save the pillars from demolition, and to design and install interpretive panels explaining the significance of the site. Colorado Preservation, Inc. contacted CDOT, who subsequently met with local supporters to verify that the pillars are original to the camp and significant to the history of Greeley. To prevent demolition of the pillars and keep them as close to the original site as possible, a compromise was reached that includes CDOT relocating the pillars to a spot on the highway in close proximity to their original location and installing a turnout so that travelers can stop and learn more about the site.
CDOT agreed to fund the relocation of the pillars to a nearby location that provided space for interpretive panel installation and a turnout for visitors. The City of Greeley applied for and received a Certified Local Government grant to design and install two interpretive panels at the new location. Colorado Preservation, Inc. held discussions with local museums, Historic Greeley, Inc., and other preservation groups to determine the design and content for interpretive signage that were installed once the pillars were relocated.
The city of Greeley Museum conducted archaeological studies, began an oral history project, and completed a documentary film about the site. The video relates the story of the World War II camp, the German prisoners, area farmers who worked with prisoners, local citizens and the only visible remains of Camp 202 – the two stone pillars. The video is available for purchase from the City of Greeley. In early 2010, the P.O.W. Camp Pillars were officially designated as local historic landmarks. (Saved)
Colorado Country Road 330 - historical ride from 100 years ago
This video is part of my Across America By Motorcycle centennial ride with my buddy Mark and his 1919 Henderson Motorcycle. I am posting other portions of this ride to my channel.
This ride, Colorado County Road 330, starts just south of a town called Walsenburg, Colorado. C.K. Shepherd rode this road back in 1919 on his Henderson Model Z-2-E 4-cylinder motorcycle and in fact took a picture that Mark was able to replicate perfectly (the exact same landscape backdrop exists today). I'll show you this spot in this video. About 50 miles further south, Shepherd went over Old Raton Pass Road in 1919 (see my video of that road), so we know he was southbound in this region on whatever passable roads there were back in 1919.
Although we can't know for certain how much of this road existed back in 1919, we do know that this portion was there, as were the railroad tracks that are still there today (surely modernized over time, just west of the road as I am starting out, all the way down to the railroad trestle). But today, with the advent of Interstate 25 out to the east, this road now has an eastbound turnout that will loop out to I-25 so we can go through without having to backtrack. Effectively, we will travel south on Colorado Road 330 until a fork in the road that takes us east on Colorado Road 310 (there is a very small sign on the west side of the road if you're looking that close, but you have to be looking for it). If you go too far, you'll figure it out in a few miles, because the road gets a lot sandier, dogs will start chasing you, and it will be sorta obvious you aren't really on a public road any longer (even though there are no signs telling you about this). And yes, I endured all of this with my own missing of this turn, followed by a very pleasant conversation with a kind local resident who came out to the road - one of the largest men I have ever come in contact with that startled me more than anything else when I first saw him come out!
This is a pleasant and easy ride, but beware of the residents on this road. Most of them were not nice people at all, frequently ripping right by you as close and fast as possible. One couple in particular was downright threatening and offensive - if you run into a guy on this road (or in Walsenburg) driving a small blue truck that has a pencil mustache and looks like Vincent Price's cousin, be forewarned he is a complete lunatic. On a personal note: If he stops long enough to get any words off, please make sure you let him know what a jackass he is (of course you probably won't get the chance because he'll either be trying to run you over or, if he stops, he'll commence to threatening you about nothing and for no apparent reason). Whew! Got all of that off my chest.
So if you're planning to be on I-25 near Walsenburg, CO between exits #42 (Rouse Rd) and #49 (I-25 business, on the south side of Walsenburg), here's a pleasant detour to take. And know that you're on a road that was ridden in part or most by C.K. Shepherd on his Henderson Model Z motorcycle back in 1919 during one of the rainiest years in U.S. history.

Buffalo Soldiers of the American West at Centennial Village
The Buffalo Soldiers of the American West performed at Centennial Village Museum in Greeley, Colorado, on September 10, 2016, as part of the annual Potato Day celebration.
The Buffalo Soldiers of the American West represent members of the 10th Cavalry M Company. The 10th cavalry was formed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and recruited soldiers from the northern states. The Buffalo Soldier’s main charge was to protect settlers as they moved west and to support the westward expansion.
