This uses supercharging which means that she can drive for an hour and then charge for about 10 minutes to charge the batteries. With supercharging you can utilise your ship much more compared to the situation where you have to have to charge the ship all night.

15. SOUNDBITE: (Swedish), Hans Thornell, Green City Ferries CEO:
The advantage is definitely that it is more environmentally friendly. A diesel driven ship of this size will emit a lot of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and other particles that are directly harmful to people. Here we have control over the whole electricity supply, we partly own a wind power station, so we have control from propeller to propeller.

Some 80 percent of the world's fossil reserves like coal, oil and gas, have to stay in the ground and not be emitted for us to stay under 2 degrees (Celsius) global warming. But at the same time we humans want to live a better life - and we have to make that possible with an alternative to using more coal, gas and oil. So to replace a boat running on diesel with a boat running on electricity, especially when the electricity is produced using wind power, is an important step in the direction of letting the oil, gas and coal stay in the ground.

LEADIN:
A Swedish company has launched what it claims is the world's first supercharged electric passenger ferry.
The 23 meter long ferry currently runs 20 trips a week from central Stockholm, taking commuters and tourists to the western end of the capital.
STORYLINE:
This might look like any other passenger ferry.
But this boat could give an indication of how boats and ships will be powered in the future.
The Movitz operates in central Stockholm and is powered by an electric motor, rather than the usual diesel engines most boats have.
The ferry started operating in central Stockholm last month taking a route from the centre of the city out to the western suburbs before returning.
In total the ferry takes 20 trips a week, carrying around 600 passengers between Gamla Stand and Solna.
Hans Thornell is the CEO of Green City Ferries, the company that developed and operates the ferry, explains:

Trials of the world's fastest all-electric commuter ferry
(28 Oct 2016) LEAD IN:
Experts in Sweden are trialling the world's fastest electric commuter ferry - a supercharged vessel capable of hitting top speeds of 30 knots (approx. 56 kilometres per hour).
Those involved in the project believe the vessel's speed, range and low environmental impact will convince commuters to trade in their daily drive for a waterborne journey instead.
STORY-LINE:
Just outside Stockholm's busy city centre, a future vision of urban travel is being trialled and optimised.
Travelling at around 25 knots (approx. 46.3 kilometres per hour) through this calm Swedish waterway is the air-supported BB Green electric commuter demo vessel named 'Airiel'.
Instead of a chugging motor down in its hull, there's this humming 200kWh Lithium Ion Titanate battery bank.
That, combined with the boat's unique design, delivers fast, waterborne transport and emission-free travel.
With the traffic congestion you're experiencing in most cities and the urbanisation coming up, you can't expand the roads how much you want, but there is a lot of space on the waterways. So, why not use the waterways? says Hans Thornell, CEO of Green City Ferries:
If you look here in Stockholm, for example, there's very few boats and a lot of cars.
BB Green is a European Union-funded project that includes eight different collaborating organisations.
Its goal is to create a fast, 30-knot (approx. 56 kilometres per hour) commuter ferry that can accommodate around 75 people, plus 15 bicycles.
The aim is to eventually source energy for recharging the batteries from sustainable sources, such as wind, hydro or tidal power.
BB Green vessels are initially intended to have a range of up to 14 nautical miles (approx. 26 kilometres) at high speeds.
Those involved with the project believe the rapidly recharging batteries make it a competitive choice for a number of routes and commuter journeys.
The battery technology is evolving very, very fast, says Thornell.
A couple of years ago, when we introduced super-charging it was quite new, now it's common.
You can charge this boat, for example, you can run for half an hour and you get around 20 kilometres away, and then you charge for, let's say 15 minutes with a quite high current and that is thanks to the new battery technology.
This 20 by 6 metre demo boat has been a long time in the making, around eight years.
The BB Green project was first initiated in 2008. It gained the funding it needed in 2011.
The boat was constructed in Riga, Latvia and first launched in June.
Now being extensively trialled and optimised on Stockholm's calm waterways, it's also being demonstrated to a host of transport authorities and regional bosses from across Europe.
When people have been talking about electric boats or zero-emission boats, they have thought old fashioned ways, says Ulf Tudem, CEO of Effect Ships International AS, a Norwegian ship design company involved with the project.
They thought; 'Okay, we would like to go eight knots, seven knots, like 15 kilometres per hour,' we said; 'Why don't we faster? Like 30 knots?' And people have said; 'Is that possible, we can do 55 kilometres per hour on the boat?
Key to the ferry's high speeds is its unique Air Supported Vessel (ASV) technology that reduces water resistance by around 40 percent.
Using an electric fan system and its unique hull shape, approximately 80 percent of the vessel's weight is supported on a cushion of air.
We take an air-cushioned vessel, a new fashion of an air-cushioned vessel, we combine it with state-of-the-art building techniques like carbon fibre, and then we have the best propulsion system, like Volvo IPS system, says Tudem.

Sustainable Cities: Stockholm's low-carbon transport revolution
For the city of Stockholm, decarbonizing the transport system is seen as the last hurdle in their journey to be fossil fuel free by 2040. Achieving this ambitious goal means the city is turning to bikes, buses, trams and zero-emission ferries, solutions which aid the transition away from private car ownership.

Stockholm, Sweden: Gamla Stan
More info about travel to Stockholm: Stockholm's compact island core is charming, photogenic, and full of antiques shops, street lanterns and surprises like the beautiful Lutheran cathedral. The main drag is a favorite with shoppers and tourists. But just a block or two from the commotion, the atmosphere changes. Tranquil lanes feel much like they did back in the 17th century, when all of Stockholm fit on Gamla Stan.

Tullgarn Palace virtual walk: green, grey and a pink palace (scenery for treadmill)
About an hour from Stockholm, on a rather rainy day in the begining of June.
About the place from the tourist office: Tullgarn, close to Trosa in Sörmland – Södermanland – is one of Sweden’s most popular royal excursions. The royal summer palace, less than an hour’s journey by car from Stockholm, provides solace for body and soul. Behind the rather severe facade, visitors will be surprised by the light interiors, a blend of the rococo, Gustavian and Victorian styles.
Tullgarn is associated with King Gustaf V and Queen Victoria, who spent their summers here in the late 1800s and the early years of the 20th century. But the palace was a royal out-of-town residence as far back as the 1770s, when the state presented it to Duke Fredrik Adolf. Admire the Duke’s interiors, which rank among the finest in Sweden.
Rest a while in the courtyard and savour the fresh sea breeze. Enjoy a cup of coffee in the stables or the Orangery. Or unpack your picnic basket by one of the ponds. The fantastic palace grounds are ideal for picnics and games, and here you will also find the Slottsboden gift shop, café and inn. In other words, Tullgarn makes the perfect excursion for all the family!

Royal Canal Tour in Stockholm - Sweden 4K Travel Channel
The Royal Canal tour leads around the island of Djurgarden through the green Stockholm. It starts at the Strömkajen on the peninsula Blasieholmen, east of Kungsträdgarden. Here was once the island Käpplingen. But it got connected to Norrmalm in the 17th century and became the peninsula Blasieholmen.
We pass the National Museum and the museum quay. Some of the ships here were restored true to the original and are partly still driven by steam-driven engines.
Past the Royal Dramatic Theater, we reach the most fashionable residential area of Stockholm, the district of Östermalm. The boulevard Strandvägen with its chic buildings is the first address for famous personalities such as Björn Borg, or Per Gessle, the singer of Roxette.
On the right is the island of Djurgarden. Djurgarden is almost 4 km long and 1 km wide.
Djurgarden is the Swedish word for a game park. Until 1809, it was the royal hunting ground. Today, it belongs to the only National City Park in Sweden founded in 1995.
The Djurgården canal forms the northern border of the island. The canal opened in 1834 after a 10-year construction period. Before this, this was a natural waterway, which silted up by the Scandinavian postglacial rebound. Then King Charles XIV erected this canal.
On the island of Djurgarden is the open-air museum Skansen. It is the oldest open-air museum in the world and the only one which is home to wild animals.
But Djurgarden is also home to the Vasa Museum, the Abba Museum, the Nordic Museum and not to forget Junibacken. The Museum Junibacken is dedicated to Swedish children's literature, especially those of Astrid Lindgren.
There are also amusement parks such as Gröner Lund, a Circus, guest houses, villas, and pleasure palaces.
Our excursion boat circumnavigates the island so that we can gain a good impression not only from the canal but also from Stockholm harbor. The gigantic cruise liners and ferries fascinate us again and again.
Passing the old town of Gamla Stan with the royal castle, the Royal Canal Tour ends again at Strömkajen.
