Yangon Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Yangon in Myanmar.
Yangon is a river city and the capital of Myanmar. A country surrounded by India, China, Laos and Thailand with a fascinating mêlée of tribes and cultures plus a tranquil harmony of churches, pagodas, Hindu temples and mosques. Here, contrast is all, and that makes Yangon unique! The Chaukhtatkyi Pagoda contains one of the largest prone Buddha statues in the world. Its length makes up for its lack of artistry as it is seventy metres long. Over six hundred monks live in the adjoining monastery that was founded in 1907 for the study of Buddhist scripts that are known as ‘Palikanums’. Three seasons determine the climate of this subtropical country: the cool of winter, the heat of summer and the monsoons when it rains for most of the afternoon and entire regions are flooded. But then follows the lush green sight of endless paddy fields. In Yangon the early morning is the best time to travel to the nearby city of Bago which was once the capital of the Second Burmese Realm. It was thought by Europeans to be the most magnificent city in the East, a fact highlighted by its many splendid monuments. The city of Yangon is like travelling back in time to the colonial days of British Rangoon and hopefully this fascinating city will continue to be a golden fairy tale behind a tantalising bamboo curtain!

???????? Myanmar (Burma): a travel documentary
#Myanmar #Travel #Documentary
Overall, Burma has been probably one if not the most breathtaking country we ever travelled. Despite officially being one of the poorest place in the world, we found very industrious and friendly people.
Yangon: the capital is not too bad to spend 2 days (no more). The Shwedagon Paya at sunset is an inspirational place while walking around in the city center will reveal magnificent and huge colonial buildings, often abandoned. One memorable experience was to take the train to Bagan. What was supposed to be a 14h journey over 600km ... turned to be a 20h journey across magnificent landscape. The very slow speed of the train and the big open windows gave the feeling to be cycling in the Burmese country side.
Once in Bagan, the magnificence of this country came to the peak. The 2,000 temples immersed in a green landscape are amazing. Exploring them is an experience that is at the same time cultural (for the history), mystical (they are still places of worship) and athletical (you can climb on top of the roof on most of them). Buddhist temples are not only places to prey, but their courts are places to meet and spend time with the family. In Bagan, thanks to the help of a group of local women, me also manage to get a ride and navigate, for a little while, the Irrawady river, the main river of Myanmar.
The Inle Lake was our next stop after Bagan. While it’s utterly beautiful, it’s probably the most touristic place in Myanmar and that spoils a bit the atmosphere. Anyway, watching the local fishermen fishing at sunset is something breathtaking. Inle Lake is not the only attraction here. After we were done with the lake, we move exploring the hills of the surrounding area, where agriculture is the main occupation for the population. We even discovered a wine estate producing very good white and red wines.
The last part of our trip was Mrauk-U, a remote rural village at the border with Bangladesh. This was the capital of the Rakhine State and during the 1500 – 1600 AD, was one of the most important cities in Asia. We looked at a painting done in the 1600 and shows a big city with long walls, a quarter for European merchants and a number of vessels and ships trading in the port. Now, the remaining temples and walls are to be found in the wheat fields.

Golden Trails of Burma
Take a look at this video of Mountain Kingdoms walking tour of Burma which shows some of the many cultural and scenic treasures that can be discovered on this 16-day walking and sightseeing holiday.
Arriving in the bustling capital of Yangon, the holiday begins with a sunset tour of Shwedagon Pagoda. Thought to be over 2,500 years old, the golden stupa is considered to be at the very heart of Burmese Buddhism and is greatly revered by the Burmese people. Covered with gold and encrusted with jewels, including over 4,500 diamonds, it is a stunning sight in the warm evening light.
From Yangon, it’s on to Mandalay followed by a drive into the surrounding hill country to visit Pyin Oo Lwin – a former British hill station. It’s a lovely area to enjoy a carriage ride as well as a gentle walk through rolling countryside, villages and fertile fields where a wide range of crops are grown by the local ethnic people. From Pyin Oo Lwin there is a train ride that crosses the famed Gokteik Viaduct – a mighty feat of Victorian engineering spanning a deep river gorge.
Then it’s back to Mandalay to visit the most significant sights in Burma’s cultural heartland including palaces, temples and pagodas. There’s also the opportunity to see local craftsmen demonstrating their traditional skills of wood carving, masonary, weaving and the fascinating creation of gold leaf which is used to cover many statues and sacred monuments. Outside of Mandalay, there are many historic sights and interesting places to spend time such as the Saigang Hills and U Bein teak bridge – one of Burma’s most photogenic attractions.
From Mandalay it’s time to board a comfortable boat for a relaxing day long cruise along the Ayeyarwaddy River to Bagan. From the comfort of the deck there will be many timeless scenes of local life to enjoy including oxen ploughing the fields, fisherman casting their nets and children playing and bathing in the waters.
Bagan is undoubtedly a real highlight of the holiday with its myriad of ancient temples and pagodas scattered across the plains. An optional balloon flight gives a chance to experience an impressive view of Bagan from above, whilst exploration by foot gives a more intimate perspective.
Leaving the temples of Bagan behind, the last stage of the journey continues with delightful walks in the cool, green hills of Kalaw before reaching the serene waters of Inle Lake. Here there is much to discover such as floating markets, traditional houses built on stilts, ancient temples and the world-renowned leg rowers who fish the lake using ancient techniques. The holiday ends with a return to Yangon, leaving behind the unforgettable people and landscapes of this beguiling land.
