The Oakliegh Pet Cemetery located in Parkville (Baltimore County) Maryland opened in the early 1930's. It is currently the oldest known pet cemetery in Central Maryland. This is a 3.5 acre site that is located on Oakleigh Road.
Currently the cemetery is threatened with redevelopment for a possible townhome community which would see the cemetery bulldozed for a 15 townhome complex to replace it.
There are efforts underway to protect, and restore the cemetery which has long been neglected. If you are on Facebook, there is a fanpage dedicated to the protection of this historic cemetery. Please join us in this endeavor, and help protect this sacred ground from destruction.

Today it's a pet cemetery, tomorrow may be a human cemetery. United we can protect this piece of history for future generations.

LOST MARYLAND: Neglected Oakleigh Pet Cemetery.
Copyright 2012. Bigg Jim Jones / Sevenpointe Productions / Paranormal Research and Investigation Society of Maryland. All Rights Reserved.
The Oakleigh Pet Cemetery in the 8400 block of Oakleigh Avenue near Putty Hill Avenue, has been in service since the latter 1930's. Thousand of beloved pets are buried here. Dogs, cats, pigs, monkeys, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and rodents, interred in a three acre lot in the middle of a rowhouse neighborhood.
Overgrown with boxwood shrubs (which grow 1/4 inch per year) are suffering from blight, and are dying. Dying trees have fallen over, destroying older headstones. Heaps of refuse, food wrappers, liquor bottles, and fallen branches make walking through this hallowed ground treacherous. some graves have been dug up by vandals looking for skulls, other graves have settled more than two feet. Gaping holes riddle the cemetery.
The smell from the decaying boxwoods mimic cat urine, and at times overbearing. The most modern burial I noticed was from 2008. A very sad place, now not worthy of burying a beloved pet. This current state of the cemetery would even give Stephen King nightmares. There are rumors that a developer is seeking to purchase this property, and turn it into a lot for four individual homes.
