Washington DC camping on a budget
This is one of the reasons we love camping! We wanted to stop in Washington during our spring break trip, but didn't make it and wanted to squeeze it in this year. We didn't have this trip budgeted for, but were able to make it work with some careful spending.
Instead of a full amenity campground we decided on National Park that didn't have any hookups for just $16/night, but was only 11 miles from downtown Washington DC. We also used a parking app to find some inexpensive, yet convenient parking, near the Air and Space museum.
The only thing that set us back was our lunch. We couldn't pack lunch into the museum and decided to eat there while waiting for the rain to end. We could have packed lunch and left it in the car, but with limited time we decided to splurge a little.
In the end we spent $202 on our three-day trip to Washington DC and I'm not so sure it would have cost us less to stay home for a weekend. Here's a breakdown of our costs:
Fuel: $ 70
Parking: $ 13
Campground for 3 days: $ 48
Lunch at the museum: $ 48
Pizza for 6: $ 23
On our trip we got to see the Air and Space Museum, Museum of Natural History, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and got a glimpse of the White House and Capital Building. We went from one end of the National Mall to the other and had a lot of tired kids at the end of the day!
Sandie was a bit concerned with the bare bones campground, but it worked out great and our next trip will be to a state park with no hookups at a great price. It turns out the kids love camping anywhere there's access to a playground and this allows us to squeeze in more trips (and memories).

The Shrinking Expanding Moon
From NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio. New images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft show the moon's crust is being stretched, forming minute valleys in a few small areas on the lunar surface. Scientists propose this geologic activity occurred less than 50 million years ago, which is considered recent compared to the moon's age of more than 4.5 billion years.
A team of researchers analyzing high-resolution images obtained by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) show small, narrow trenches typically much longer than they are wide. This indicates the lunar crust is being pulled apart at these locations. These linear valleys, known as graben, form when the moon's crust stretches, breaks and drops down along two bounding faults. A handful of these graben systems have been found across the lunar surface.
We think the moon is in a general state of global contraction because of cooling of a still hot interior, said Thomas Watters of the Center for Earth and Planetary Studies at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, and lead author of a paper on this research appearing in the March issue of the journal Nature Geoscience. The graben tell us forces acting to shrink the moon were overcome in places by forces acting to pull it apart. This means the contractional forces shrinking the moon cannot be large, or the small graben might never form.
The weak contraction suggests that the moon, unlike the terrestrial planets, did not completely melt in the very early stages of its evolution. Rather, observations support an alternative view that only the moon's exterior initially melted forming an ocean of molten rock.
In August 2010, the team used LROC images to identify physical signs of contraction on the lunar surface, in the form of lobe-shaped cliffs known as lobate scarps. The scarps are evidence the moon shrank globally in the geologically recent past and might still be shrinking today. The team saw these scarps widely distributed across the moon and concluded it was shrinking as the interior slowly cooled.
Based on the size of the scarps, it is estimated that the distance between the moon's center and its surface shank by approximately 300 feet. The graben were an unexpected discovery and the images provide contradictory evidence that the regions of the lunar crust are also being pulled apart.
This pulling apart tells us the moon is still active, said Richard Vondrak, LRO Project Scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. LRO gives us a detailed look at that process.
As the LRO mission progresses and coverage increases, scientists will have a better picture of how common these young graben are and what other types of tectonic features are nearby. The graben systems the team finds may help scientists refine the state of stress in the lunar crust.
It was a big surprise when I spotted graben in the far side highlands, said co-author Mark Robinson of the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University, principal investigator of LROC. I immediately targeted the area for high-resolution stereo images so we could create a three-dimensional view of the graben. It's exciting when you discover something totally unexpected and only about half the lunar surface has been imaged in high resolution. There is much more of the moon to be explored.

NASA INFO: Original Mission Video as aired in July 1969 depicting the Apollo 11 astronauts conducting several tasks during extravehicular activity (EVA) operations on the surface of the moon. The EVA lasted approximately 2.5 hours with all scientific activities being completed satisfactorily. The Apollo 11 (EVA) began at 10:39:33 p.m. EDT on July 20, 1969 when Astronaut Neil Armstrong emerged from the spacecraft first. While descending, he released the Modularized Equipment Stowage Assembly on the Lunar Module's descent stage. A camera on this module provided live television coverage of man's first step on the Moon. On this, their one and only EVA, the astronauts had a great deal to do in a short time. During this first visit to the Moon, the astronauts remained within about 100 meters of the lunar module, collected about 47 pounds of samples, and deployed four experiments. After spending approximately 2 hours and 31 minutes on the surface, the astronauts ended the EVA at 1:11:13 a.m. EDT on July 21.

NASA INFO: In July 2009 in celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, NASA released newly restored video from the July 20, 1969, live television broadcast of the Apollo 11 moonwalk.
The initial video release, part of a larger Apollo 11 moonwalk restoration project, features 15 key moments from the historic lunar excursion of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.
A team of Apollo-era engineers, who helped produce the 1969 live broadcast of the moonwalk, acquired the best of the broadcast-format video from a variety of sources for the restoration effort. These included a copy of a tape recorded at NASA's Sydney, Australia, video switching center, where down-linked television from Parkes and Honeysuckle Creek was received for transmission to the U.S.; original broadcast tapes from the CBS News Archive recorded via direct microwave and landline feeds from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston; and kinescopes found in film vaults at Johnson that had not been viewed for 36 years.
The restoration is ongoing and may produce even better video, said Richard Nafzger, an engineer at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., who oversaw television processing at the ground tracking sites during Apollo 11. The restoration project is scheduled to be completed in September and will provide the public, future historians, and the National Archives with the highest quality video of this historic event.
NASA contracted with Lowry Digital of Burbank, Calif., which specializes in restoring aging Hollywood films and video, to take the highest quality video available from these recordings, select the best for digitization, and significantly enhance the video using the company's proprietary software technology and other restoration techniques.
Under the initial effort, Lowry restored 15 scenes representing the most significant moments of the three and a half hours that Armstrong and Aldrin spent on the lunar surface. NASA released the video Thursday at a news conference at the Newseum in Washington.
On July 20, 1969, as Armstrong made the short step off the ladder of the Lunar Excursion Module onto the powdery lunar surface, a global community of hundreds of millions of people witnessed one of humankind's most remarkable achievements live on television.
The black and white images of Armstrong and Aldrin bounding around the moon were provided by a single small video camera aboard the lunar module. The camera used a non-standard scan format that commercial television could not broadcast.
NASA used a scan converter to optically and electronically adapt these images to a standard U.S. broadcast TV signal. The tracking stations converted the signals and transmitted them using microwave links, Intelsat communications satellites, and AT&T analog landlines to Mission Control in Houston. By the time the images appeared on international television, they were substantially degraded.

Morganton NC Tour - Three Camera View - Part 2

First and foremost, I want to wish Justin aka Jowevator 3219 a happy birthday! I know he loves old Montgomery elevators so this one's for him! Installed in 1977, these are by far the best Montgomery elevators I have ridden in a long time! The ride quality is excellent, the fixtures are solid and juicy, and the overall design of this elevator is jaw-dropping. I love how there's a lot of retro things in the lobby like the rotary telephones and the vintage mailbox. Plus the metropolitan Marquis that reads “Elevators” and the location is a nice touch. The relays, bells, and the motors on the elevators sound like music. If you ever come down to SoCal, you should stop by here before you leave this area because these elevators will go down in history!

East Coast Greenway - Greenbelt-DC-Occoquan Route Highlights
The East Coast Greenway runs over 3,000 miles between Maine and Florida. Part of it runs through the DC metropolitan area, and this video highlights parts of the route and landmarks that can be seen along the way. About 48 miles of the East Coast Greenway are covered in this video.
Starting in Greenbelt, Maryland, the East Coast Greenway mostly uses roads before joining the colorful Anacostia Tributary Trail System which offers an alternate river-based route to the main route (which I labeled the Metropolitan route as it is more city-based and uses the Metropolitan Branch Trail).
Heading into Washington, DC, the main route uses the Metropolitan Branch Trail to take riders to Union Station. After Union Station, the route accesses the heart of the nation's capital: National Mall. Every branch of government and a plethora of museums and memorials can be accessed before the route leads across the Potomac River and onto the Mount Vernon Trail.
The Mount Vernon Trail takes riders into Virginia where they can watch airplanes take-off/land directly overhead at Gravelly Point, connect with numerous local trails, stop at the midpoint of the entire East Coast Greenway, visit historic Old Town Alexandria, and travel along the Potomac River until reaching George Washington's home of Mount Vernon in Fairfax County. The route then leads onto the newly completed US-1 Trail which provides a safe way to access Lorton. The Arts Workhouse, a former prison, is the last major landmark before the route crosses the Occoquan River into the town of Occoquan where the video ends.
A quick note on the DC portion of this video: you'll notice fences set up along parts of Constitution Ave and the National Mall. These are temporary security fences set up for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations (my footage is from June 30 and July 2).

While hanging out with a couple of friends, one had to stop at an ATM to deposit a check. In my favor, the ATM happened to be in this large office building. Since it just finished snowing, most of the building was empty (including the security desk) which made it perfect to film the elevator. This is a strange elevator as it was installed by Dover, however the keyswitches, fire service, indicatiors, and interlocks were replaced by Otis.
