The Grimsel Pass in Switzerland links the Hasli Valley in the Bernese Oberland with the Goms Valley in the Valais. On the Bernese side, hairpin bends lead up through a rugged landscape marked by grey-green granite and reservoirs with gigantic hydroelectricity dams to the pass head at 2165 metres above sea level. It then snakes its way down to Gletsch in Obergoms on the Valais side. When the pass is open -- usually from June to October -- it is extremely popular with motorcyclists, as the rusty sculpture at the pass head testifies.

To the west of the pass and lake is the Sidelhorn mountain 2,764 metres, whilst to the east is the Gärstenhörner massif 3,189 metros. The Lakes: Oberaarsee, Grimselsee, Räterichsbodensee and Totensee are breathtaking!
The secret tip lies at 2500 meters above sea level: Berghaus Oberaar. Here you go up close to the eternal ice of the glacier, where you can look down from above on the waters of the reservoir.

The Grimsel Pass (German: Grimselpass; French: Col du Grimsel; Italian: Passo del Grimsel) is a mountain pass in Switzerland, crossing the Bernese Alps at an elevation of 2,164 metres (7,100 ft). The pass connects the Haslital, the upper valley of the river Aare, with the upper valley of the Rhône. In so doing, and as the Aare is a tributary of the Rhine, the pass crosses the continental divide between the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
A paved road follows the pass, running 38 kilometres (24 mi) from Gletsch to Meiringen.
The Grimsel Pass road is part of the Aare Route, which is national cycle route 8 of Switzerland. It has been used on several occasions by the Tour de Suisse.
The Grimsel Pass connects the cantons of Bern, to the north, and Valais, to the south, with the summit of the pass lying on the cantonal boundary. The northern slopes of the pass are in the Bernese municipality of Guttannen, whilst the southern slopes are within the Valais municipality of Obergoms.
At the summit are several hotels and an extensive area of parking. Here the road runs alongside the Totesee (2,160 metres or 7,090 feet), a natural lake that has been enlarged into a reservoir. To the west of the pass and lake is the peak of the Sidelhorn (2,764 metres or 9,068 feet), whilst to the east is the mountain range Schafberg (2,481 metres or 8,140 feet).
Weather
The road is normally closed between October and May, due to the high snowfall on the pass. As it is the only direct road pass between the cantons of Bern and Valais across the Bernese Alps, attempts are made to keep the road open as long as possible with snow ploughs. A PostBus Switzerland service uses the pass several times a day, connecting Meiringen and Oberwald.
Climate
Due to the high altitude of the pass, and its continental location, the climate is cool or cold all year round, and receives a fair amount of precipitation year-round (the majority of which is snow). Snow usually falls from late September until late June, although during cool spells, it can snow at the height of summer. Most years, permanent snow fields remain at the pass, due to the temperature rarely rising above 15 °C. This area has a long winter season, with little precipitation mostly in the form of snow, and low humidity. The Köppen climate classification classifies the climate here as subarctic.
Grimselsee
The Grimselsee or Lake Grimsel is an artificial lake near the Grimsel Pass in the Canton of Berne, Switzerland. With a volume of 95 mio m³, it is larger than other hydroelectric reservoirs in the region: Oberaarsee, Räterichsbodensee and Gelmersee. The dam was completed in 1932 and is operated by Kraftwerke Oberhasli AG (KWO). It is located in the municipality of Guttannen.

Totesee (Germanized: Totensee) is a small natural lake (18 ha or 44 acres) at the Grimsel Pass in Switzerland. The lake lies immediately to the south of the natural watershed and cantonal boundary at the pass. It is therefore in the canton of Valais, and it would naturally drain into the river Rhône in the valley below. However a dam has been constructed to enable its use as a reservoir, increasing its size and raising its level by 16 metres (52 ft). As part of this work, an aqueduct supplies water to the Grimselsee, which drains into the river Aare and thus forms part of the Rhine catchment.

The Grimsel Pass links the Hasli Valley in the Bernese Oberland with Goms in Valais. The pass road runs through a wild, sparsely grown mountainous region marked by granite rocks, reservoir lakes, and power plants.
Innertkirchen near the holiday resort of Meiringen is the starting point of two impressive pass roads. The Susten Pass leads eastward to Central Switzerland. Southward, a splendidly constructed road climbs in large bends in the direction of the Grimsel Pass. In the Guttannen, the “Crystal Village”, one can admire crystals of all sizes in the Prospector’s Museum. The road ascends through canyons of wild beauty that get narrower and narrower. Hydroelectric power plants, high voltage power lines and high reservoir lake walls dominate the landscape on the northern side of the Grimsel Pass.
The Furka Pass (Furkapass), also made famous by a scene from James Bond 007 Goldfinger' is a gorgeous Swiss mountain pass. The pass also features the Rhone Glacier, once a famous attraction, but now disappearing year by year, probably because of global warming. The video also features the once famous Hotel Belvedere, once a major hotspot and celebrity destination and now closed because of the Rhone glacier's retreat and loss of appeal. View cinematic footage of the Historisches Alpinhotel Grimsel Hospiz and the dams around it, such as the Grimsel Dam. he first certified guesthouse of Switzerland was located at this exact place, way back in 1142. In 1932, the Grimsel Hospiz caused quite a sensation as it was the first electrically heated house in Europe. Environmental considerations had to be taken into account when the hotel was completely renovated between 2008 and 2010 and the entire hotel is now heated by using hydroelectric waste-heat. As a historic 4-star alpine hotel in the heart of the KWO catchment area, the Hotel Hospiz reigns majestically above the Grimsel reservoir lake (Grimselsee).
The Gotthard Pass or St. Gotthard Pass (Italian: Passo del San Gottardo, German: Gotthardpass) at 2,106 m (6,909 ft) is a mountain pass in the Alps traversing the Saint-Gotthard Massif and connecting northern and southern Switzerland. The pass lies between Airolo in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, and Andermatt in the German-speaking canton of Uri, and connects further Bellinzona to Lucerne, Basel, and Zurich. The Gotthard Pass lies at the hearth of the Gotthard, an important north-south axis in Europe, and is it crossed by three major traffic tunnels, each being the world's longest at the time of their construction: the Gotthard Rail Tunnel (1882), the Gotthard Road Tunnel (1980) and the Gotthard Base Tunnel (2016). With the Lötschberg to the west, the Gotthard is one of the two main north-south routes through the Swiss Alps. Since the Middle Ages, transit across the Gotthard played an important role in Swiss history, the region north of Gotthard becoming the nucleus of the Swiss Confederacy in the early 14th century.

As part of our European holiday 3-11 June 2015 we travelled to Interlaken to check out the town and the next morning paragliding - perfect weather to catch the thermal!
In the afternoon, we travelled on to Meiningen where we were booked for a self guided hiking trip - over the course of the next 6 days we hiked to the Aareschucht; the Halisberg area (Panorama Way); visited Jungfraujoch (Europe's highest train station); Murran; Reichenbach Falls & Rosenlaui area (Gletscherschlucht); and Brienz & Giessbach on the Brienzersee.

The Furka and Grimsel is a high mountain pass in the Swiss Alps connecting Gletsch, Valais with Realp, Uri. The Furka Oberalp Bahn line through the Furka Tunnel bypasses the pass. The base tunnel opened in 1982 and replaced a tunnel at 2100 m.
The Furka Pass was used as a location in the James Bond film Goldfinger. One curve on the east side of the pass is even named James Bond Strasse. At the sign, there is a lookout point with a small parking area. Visitors can also park next to Hotel Belvédère, close to the top of the pass on the west side, and take the short walk to the Rhone Glacier Ice Grotto. The glacier moves 30-40 meters a year and the 100 m long tunnel and ice chamber can be visited from June when the road opens.

Grimsel Pass - Switzerland
The Grimsel is one of the best passes in the Alps. Approaching from the North, the pass climbs up through lush forests, with wide smooth sweeping roads, this then gradually opens into a granite like valley either side, where the views begin to open up, and the road starts to become more twisty. The final ascent to the top is one of the best, with some great switchbacks, and excellent views ahead throughout, there are very few blind bends or unsighted crests. The run back down from the top is much more narrow, the road not quite so smooth, however still fun, but you do have to concentrate all the way down to the valley floor, as on-coming traffic can be difficult to negotiate along some stretches, and there are a number of blind bends.
