New playground in Green Township designed for kids with sensory disabilities
GREEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) - A new playground in Green Township is being called the first of its kind in the Tri-State.
West Fork Park will soon have a customized area for all kids. It's been specially designed to help children with autism.
On August 21st, the Holiday Playland at West Fork Park will be demolished. It was built back and 1999 and Green Township Trustee Triffon Callos says it’s had some safety issues. Callos says they’ve come up a plan to build a whole new structure and it's very unique.
The new and improved playground will have features like a rock climbing area and a zip line, but what sets it's apart are the sensory elements like a rainbow maze with different color blocks that reflect light and are textured for children to touch.
Tina Stanton-Champman is an early childhood professor at the University of Cincinnati. She says other parks are designed around a child's physical disabilities and this park is designed for children with sensory disabilities.
The kids who have autism or sensory disabilities tend to wander around playgrounds. We are trying to get them in and be engaged and around other children more, said Stanton.
Stanton teamed up with a local company called Playground Equipment Services to design something for kids of all ages and abilities.
There are even tiny playhouses for babies who are starting to crawl and pull themselves up. Trustee Callos says when they put the project out for bid picking this innovative design was easy.
He (Eric Schmidt CEO) has data driven studies that show certain equipment will benefit those children that might not benefit from the traditional play structures. So I thought it was unique it really stood out to me., said Stanton.
Schmidt added that the old tower and the memorial plaques will be put up at the new site.
Construction is expected to take four to five weeks. It’s set to be open for kids in late September. The new playground will cost about $470,000.
