Grateful Dead v2 (2 cam) 10-17-1990 Grugahalle, Essen, Germany (Set 2 Complete)
A LoloYodel two-video angle remix, RE-EDITED (called Version 2) in October 2018. (My 1st upload was circa 2014).
This upgrade comes essentially from a improved Rasensteine video which has better stabilisation and was de-interlaced.
These 1990 European shows were SOME of the The Best of The Grateful Dead !
9 years and 7 months after the Dead's 1st and epic appearance at this Grugahalle, Essen, Germany (March 28, 1981), the Boys returned here (Essen) for their 1st of 5 German shows on this European Trip.
Also, 7 months after the truly spectacular and sonically unique East Coast Spring 1990 Tour (Landover, Albany, Nassau ...), but just 3 months after the tragic death of the beloved keyboardist Brent Mydland (July 26th), The Grateful Dead embarked on this very strong European Tour which started in Sweden on October 13th (jet lag and all ...), then Germany, Grugahalle, Essen where it begins to pick up, then France and the Tour ended on November 1st at Wembley, London UK.
Vince Welnick and Bruce Hornsby are there to replace Mydland on keyboards ...
All of these European shows, beyond their European flavor, were unique in that they were in relatively small
4000-5000 seat venues, versus the average 40 000 + seat coliseums, if not stadiums, that the Dead had already begun to experience in the USA. And I'm sure that The Grateful Dead was not oblivious to that European intimacy.
Essen Germany :
First we gotta remember that this, AT THE TIME, was JUST 12 months after the Berlin Wall came down ! Politically a big time movement/change in the European framework.
After that, well, this was the 2nd show of the European Tour, 1st was Stockholm which was a relative ho-hum show due the the adjustments, the jet-lag and other crap ...
So here we are, Essen, Germany (with Weir sweating it out !)
LoloYodel Notes :
Set 1 : a very, VERY fine 1st set ! strong, energetic, within time and place ! Also, Angle Two (from right of stage view) is COOL cause it often shows Jerry's big old eye smiles towards Bruuuce (keyboards) !
Set 2 : They are on the juice ! Watch'em all swing, Phil bouncin', Bobby smiling, and Jerry on the watch (see Jerry connect with Bruce during He's Gone ...) !
China Cat ~ Rider : watch Bobby sharpingly inspire these songs, so good. Even Need a Miracle has a very cool twang and see Jerry really get into it !
VIDEOS (with my habitual gratitude and thanks for all whose who previously filmed, produced and shared the originals). Granted amateur videos but to have two video angles, with such visual diversity, is truely an addition to our viewing and auditive pleasure. Forget color resolution and any other puritanical poop, enjoy this !
Angle One : Lazy Cow, captured by Ray B, synch/authored by BigWuRock
Video: AUD (Tripod) ~ JVC Single Tube Camera ...
Left of stage angle. This is probably a 2nd or 3rd generation copy, but the only
one that circulates.
I reduced Color Contrast (and/or Saturation) by -20%, and on some songs, -30%.
Angle Two : Rasensteine, colorful and rare right of stage view (cool !)
10/2018 This copy has better quality resolution, was de-interlaced and was stabilized.
I reduced the color-saturation by -75% (to -125% depending on songs) to try and
find better visual harmony with the darker Lazy Cow video.
