In LA, poverty on Skid Row defies US’ humane reputation
Sanitary and living conditions for an estimated 2,000 homeless people along Los Angeles’ Skid Row are so severe that the United Nations recently compared them to Syrian refugee camps. How does extreme poverty persist in one of the country’s most expensive real estate markets? NewsHour Weekend Special Correspondent Simon Ostrovsky reports. This is part of an ongoing series of reports called 'Chasing the Dream,' which reports on poverty and opportunity in America.
The Millennium Biltmore Hotel (Found Hidden, Prohibition Era Door!)
Hiyaaa ;)
.
.
.
So this is the trip we took to the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles CA. The hotel has a very long history dating all the way back to 1923. The hotel is known to be haunted from ghost such as, “The Black Dahlia” and much more. The hotel is also known for its connection with mob activity and famous gangsters like Al Capone. Gangsters would use secret doors in the hotel that lead to rooms which acted as speakeasies during the prohibition. We got lucky enough to find one of these doors and actually go inside, enjoy ;)

I used some clips from Buzzfeed’s Unsolved series ( to help teach the history about the Black Dahlia Murder…Fair use guidelines: Different countries have different rules about when it’s okay to use material without the copyright owner’s permission. For example, in the United States, works of commentary, criticism, research, teaching, or news reporting might be considered fair use. Some other countries have a similar idea called fair dealing that may work differently.

Motorcycle Lane Splitting In Los Angeles, CA

How to Drive in Los Angeles
17 tips for driving in Los Angeles, California. Driving in LA for the first time can be overwhelming for visitors. Learn the ropes and the rules of the road in LA so you'll be more comfortable when you arrive and drive. First: Traffic. If you spend much time in LA you learn to plan your life around traffic. As a visitor you should do the same. Morning traffic is 6am to 9am. Evening Rush is 3pm to 6:30pm. Fridays are worse. Pre Holidays like the day before Thanksgiving are awful. In general traffic flows towards Downtown LA in the morning, and away in the afternoon.
2: Freeways. LA has a ton of Freeways. We refer to them as “The 5” or “The 10” with north, south, east, west directions. Diamond Lanes are HOV lanes, certain number of passengers.. 24/7. You can often also pay to drive in some HOV lanes on the 110, 91. But you need a Fastrak transponder. The 110 Express lanes require a FASTRAK transponder even if carpooling.
3: Speed Limits. 65 on Freeways, 25 MPH on unmarked residential streets. Slower traffic on the right, faster traffic on the left. Go with the flow. Please don’t set your cruise control at 65MPH in the HOV lane. There aren't any speed cameras in LA. It seems nobody in LA actually abides by the speed limit. Pay extra attention to school zones where the speed limit is at certain times.
4: Changing lanes. It seems that in LA if you put your indicator on to ask to be let into a lane people just speed up and don’t let you in. General guideline is to put on your blinker just about as you are to change lanes.
5: Right turn on Red. Not many visitors would know this. You can turn right at a red light after you stop, as long as it is safe to do so. Turn front the right lane to the right lane. You can make a left turn on red on one way streets. Pay attention for people making U turns. Pay attention for signs that prohibit right turns on red.
6: Red light cameras. Automatically send you a ticket if you run a red light.. block an intersection.. or make a right turn on red without stopping first. Only in certain cities, like Beverly Hills.
7: Pedestrians. Legally at intersections and crosswalks. As a car if someone is in the crosswalk at any point you are supposed to stop. Generally you'll find behavior is cars go as long as people aren't near them. Pay attention for pedestrians crossing illegally in the middle of street. It happens all the time.
8: Bicycles. Can legally ride anywhere cars can except the freeway. Generally they stay in the right lane. But you may find them in the middle or even the left. Where there aren't bike lanes you may find them taking the whole lane.. give them space. Escooters legally are supposed to be on the street too.
9: Motorcycles. Can legally “split” the lane. On the freeway you'll find them driving between the HOV lane and the regular lanes. Supposed to only be 10 miles faster than the flow of the regular traffic.
10: Emergency Vehicles. Flashing lights and a siren, pull to the right. Freeway just move to the right. If they are behind you well.. then pull over and stop. On local streets from behind you or towards you. Unless it's a divided road and they are on the other side.
11: Stop Signs. First come first served. If you arrived at the same time, the person to your right goes. Beware of the “California Stop” -- that's just people who slow down.
12: Traffic lights. Traffic lights that are flashing red or off means it's a 4 way stop. Flashing yellow means “be careful” but it doesn't mean stop. When the light goes to yellow it means red is coming. It doesn't mean slam on your brakes.
Left turn yield.
13: Parking. You’ll be paying for parking in LA. Get over it. Try to park some place that isnt too sketchy.
14: Gas Stations. It seems international credit cards don’t work at the pump. So visitors have to pre pay. It’s annoying as you have to guess how much fuel you need. Also if you pre-pay say $50 and the car only takes $45, the balance gets credited back on your card.
15: GPS. Keep your GPS app with traffic on all the time. I like Google Maps. Lots of others like Waze.
16: Drive on the right. Tight Right, Loose Left. A good way for visitors to remember how to turn. Submitted from Dave James on Facebook

How to Legally Smoke Weed in California | MERRY JANE News
Subscribe to the MERRY JANE Newsletter for the latest video releases and everything cannabis:
California has entered a whole new era and the days of cannabis prohibition are fading into the past.
As of January 1st, 2018, California became the most populous U.S. state to legalize recreational cannabis use. The Golden State is not just transitioning from a medical marijuana-only state to a fully rec-legal state, however, it is also transitioning from a largely unregulated market to a tightly controlled one. This means that there are numerous laws, rules, and regulations governing exactly when, where, and how you can use pot.
For Californians who are used to the “wild west” days of the unregulated medical marijuana market, or for tourists looking to legally purchase marijuana for the first time ever, the list of rules and regulations can be confusing. But there's no need to spend hours Googling the guidelines – MERRY JANE has prepared a concise list of do's and don'ts that will you have you sparking up on the right side of the law in no time.
Full transcript below:
As of 6am on January 1st, any adult in California is legally able to purchase weed for recreational use. While this offers stoners freedoms that haven't been seen since the 1920s, there are still many rules and regulations on how and where you can buy and smoke pot that you will need to keep in mind.
Here's a quick breakdown of what you can and can't do:
DO - Buy cannabis products at a licensed retail store. If you're 21 or older, you can walk into any licensed establishment and shop to your heart's content. Keep in mind that you are allowed to personally possess up to 28.5 grams of flower and 8 grams of concentrates at a time.
DON'T – Expect to find a retail store in your neighborhood that's open on January 1st. Many towns have opted out of allowing recreational canna-businesses in their areas, and some cities have delayed their local start date for retail sales - so you may need to take a road trip to find some legal weed.
DO – Smoke as much weed as you like in private. Proposition 64 authorizes local governments to license microbusinesses that will allow adults to purchase and cannabis onsite, but it will take time for these to become operational. In the meantime, enjoy your stash at home or at your friends' house.
DON'T – Smoke pot in public. Using cannabis in public – including sidewalks, parks, restaurants, and beaches - is still illegal throughout the state, and offenders can be fined $100. If you are smoking pot in a place where cigarette smoking is also illegal, you can be fined up to $250. If you're a tourist, remember that many hotels also prohibit smoking up.
DO – Grow your own marijuana. Adult California residents are legally allowed to grow up to 6 plants at home. Some local governments will be able to prohibit outdoor cultivation of marijuana, so check with your city government before planting some weed in your front yard. But even if your community prohibits outdoor grows, the law still gives you the right to grow your plants indoors.
DON'T – Sell pot to anyone, especially minors. (image 2) The state has mandated that all retail sales be handled through licensed stores in order to put an end to black market sales and keep weed out of the hands of minors. You can, however, gift another adult 1 ounce of flower or 8 grams of concentrate.
DO - Check your employer's drug policy. Because marijuana is still a Schedule I drug prohibited by the federal government, employers maintain the right to drug test employees and to fire anyone that tests positive for marijuana.
DON'T – Drive under the influence or smoke pot in your car. Police will be conducting sobriety tests and enforcing marijuana-impaired driving as strictly as they enforce drunk driving laws. Also, if cops find an “open container” of weed – which can mean anything from an open baggie to a loaded vape pen to an unwrapped edible – you can be fined $100.
DO - Get your criminal record expunged. If you have been previously arrested for possession or cultivation of small quantities of cannabis, you can petition the court to have this black mark removed from your records permanently.
DON'T – Smuggle or take your weed out of state. It might be tempting to mail some edibles to your cousin in Alabama or to bring a secret stash with you on your holiday trip, but these ideas are dangerous and illegal. Not only do you risk putting yourself in hot water with the law, bringing or sending pot to a state where it's illegal can alert federal authorities, possibly inspiring them to crack down on legal cannabis in California.
DO – Enjoy yourself!

Ion Torrent Bus Tour - Los Angeles
The X PRIZE Foundation announces that Life Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: LIFE) is the first team to officially register under the new guidelines for the Archon Genomics X PRIZE presented by Express Scripts where teams will compete for up to $10 million by being the first to rapidly and accurately sequence 100 whole human genomes at a cost of $1,000 or less each to a standard never before achieved. The result of this competition will be the world's first clinical standard that will transform genome sequencing into usable medical information to improve patient diagnosis and treatment.
The Ion Torrent X PRIZE team, led by CEO and Founder Dr. Jonathan Rothberg, will use the company's new benchtop Ion Proton™ Sequencer in the competition. Ion Torrent technology is based on a fundamentally new semiconductor device that enables chemical signals to be directly translated into digital information for the first time, much like the CMOS imager in an iPhone that directly translates photons into electrons to take pictures.
It would have cost $100 million and taken 33 years to meet this challenge when the competition was announced in 2006, said Dr. Rothberg. The new Ion Proton sequencer is designed to sequence a human genome for $1,000 in just a few hours. Semiconductor technology is transforming sequencing just as it has transformed every other industry it's touched, driving research and, ultimately, improving health.
To make the competition scientifically valuable and more meaningful to the general public, every team will be given the DNA of 100 centenarians to sequence. These 100 genomic pioneers, who represent a unique population of individuals whose genetic makeup and personal behaviors have contributed to their longevity, are part of the 100 Over 100. They have donated their genomes to this competition and provided insights about the factors impacting healthy aging in order to further medical science.
Through this competition, the X PRIZE Foundation is setting a very high standard for the industry to ensure that whole genome sequencing technologies are reliable, replicable and can produce diagnostic-quality results. It is revolutionary, said Robert K. Weiss, Vice Chairman & President of the X PRIZE Foundation. We have been unwilling to compromise the criteria set for the Archon Genomics X PRIZE because the required levels of accuracy, speed and cost must be achieved to truly impact the field of genomics. Ion Torrent's registration and intention to compete is a dramatic statement about their commitment to delivering outstanding, ground breaking technology. They have thrown their hat in a ring that will hopefully soon include other companies vying for the prize and the chance to make history and revolutionize medicine.
Upon completion of the competition, the X PRIZE Foundation will compile a public database of the DNA sequences and cell lines from the 100 Over 100 genomes, giving researchers and scientists from around the world open access to this incredibly rich data. The knowledge gained by compiling and comparing this library will further our understanding of health and longevity. Decoding the secrets to a long and healthy life, including the behavioral choices made along the way, could lead to important learnings that will benefit us all and start a new era of personalized medicine.

NYC and LA are the two largest cities in the United States. New York has the most people, with a population of 8.5 million, while LA has around 4 million people. The New York metropolitan area, however, has 20.3 million people. So about 1 in 16 Americans live there. The Los Angeles metropolitan area has about 13.1 million people.
Both are cosmopolitan, world famous cities. Two cities that never seem to sleep- always hustling and bustling. Over the last century, the two cities have dominated and influenced the culture of the rest of the country. It’s like the two forget the fact that the rest of us exist. You see this on mainstream TV. Most national news and entertainment programming occurs in LA or New York, although LA has way more YouTubers than New York.
Both are by oceans. NYC by the Atlantic Ocean, and LA by the Pacific.
Both are diverse. We’re talking people flock from all over the world to these two cities to start new lives. More than 37% of New York residents were born in another country. Nearly 40% of LA residents were born in another country. Almost half of the residents of LA are considered either Hispanic or Latino. New York has historically been the main way immigrants come to the United States. In both LA and New York, you’ll see lots of ethnic enclaves, or neighborhoods dominated by one ethnic group.
Both tend to have younger residents compared to most other cities around the United States, although LA’s a bit younger. (The median age in New York is about 35.8, while the median age in LA is about 34.6.)
It’s really freaking expensive to live in both cities, although LA is about 8.3% less expensive than New York. But it’s a lot more expensive to buy a home in LA. The median household income in both cities is similar. (LA 61,931, NYC 64,605) The unemployment rates and job growth rates are also comparable.(LA 4.2%, NYC 4.2% ) (LA 1.2% job growth, NYC 2% job growth)
Related to how expensive it is in both places, of course, is how crowded both cities are. While LA is notorious for its bad traffic, by some metrics New York’s traffic is actually worse. Here’s another surprise. If you look at the entire metro areas, LA, the city known for its sprawl that goes on for miles and miles, has a higher population density than New York. But city proper, ain’t nobody as dense as New York City. We’re talking 27,000 per square mile in NYC versus around 8,000 people per square mile in LA. The average commute time for both cities is way higher than the national average.
New Yorkers use more public transportation than LA folks BY FAR. I mean, there’s really no comparison. In LA, people own cars. They drive. In New York, over half of the households don’t own a car. 75% of Manhattan residents don’t.
Traveling past the Thomas Wildfire in California.
We are starting a road trip to the Central Coast of California from San Diego. This trip will take us up the 5 and 101 freeways through Los Angeles and Santa Barbara and the Thomas Fire.

Living in Lemoore, California (Things to do & road trips)
What's it like living in Lemoore, California? Is there anything to do in this tiny town? We lived in Lemoore for well over a year. About 30-50 minutes from the larger cities of Fresno and Visalia, Lemoore gets a bad reputation (especially amongst military members) for being in the middle of nowhere. Contrary to popular belief, there are a few things to do in town. Additionally, there are many close road trips you can take. These include trips to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Pismo Beach, San Francisco and many more!
