WOODBRIDGE HOUSE GUILDFORD PERTH WESTERN AUSTRALIA AA 2006 CHARLES HARPER
Charles Harper was elected to the Legislative Council in 1879, marrying and settling in Guildford in the same year. He also purchased the daily newspaper The West Australian that year and founded the weekly Western Mail six years later, intending it to serve the rural community. At the same time, and even before the Woodbridge house was completed in 1885, he was developing orchards and vineyards on both sides of the river.

Guildford is mostly a residential suburb that is serviced by Holroyd, Parramatta and Fairfield councils.
Named after the town in Surrey, England, Guildford is located approximately 24km west of the Sydney CBD. Bordering onto Merrylands, Granville, Yennora, Villawood and Fairfield, Guildford is extremely central and offers a village like lifestyle.
Over the past few years there has been a large increase in various development activity with a number of new home and residential accommodation units, however there has also been a keen interest in preserving the heritage that currently exists within the area.
Most essential day to day goods can be acquired within the local shopping centre which is concentrated around the railway station.
There is easy access to the M4 motorway, Great Western and Hume Highways for those who rely on these routes on a daily basis.

Tranby House was built by Joseph Hardey who arrived at the Swan River Colony (now Western Australia) in February 1839. It is the oldest property vested in the National Trust and is the oldest inhabitated house (farmhouse).
Tranby is situated on the Swan River and is surrounded by massive oak trees brought out from England by the Hardey family on the brig 'Tranby'. Along the river banks are large black olive trees, from saplings picked up in South Africa en route to the Swan River Colony.
Within Tranby House are items of furniture also brought out on the brig by Hardey and Clarkson families. The flooring is a pit sawn Jarrah, grown on the property and the bricks used in the partial construction were 'burnt' adjacent to Tranby House.

WALKING IN SURREY | BOX HILL
In the first of (and hopefully) many day walks, Candice and myself ventured into Surrey and Box Hill in particular, one of the counties many high points. What we found was a vast amount of military history dating from the Napoleonic era to World War II, in the form of forts, pillboxes and anti-tank traps!
We mostly made up our own route, pieced together by various routes designed by the National Trust. In total, I'd say we covered the best part of 10 miles.
We stopped for lunch on top of one pillbox for a British Army Ration Pack.
We plan on going back there again to continue many of the routes laid out by NT and even try a stealth wild camp in the surrounding woodland.

MIDLAND RAILWAY WORKSHOPS PERTH WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Midland Railway Workshops AA 2006 The Midland Railway Workshops ran for close to a century on the Eastern fringe of Perth, Western Australia. Large and multifaceted, the Workshops were vital to the development and maintenance of the WA rail system, and a crucial training ground for skilled tradespeople. Their closure in 1994 brought to an end not only a specific industrial complex but also a complex social community. Despite the harsh, dirty and often dangerous working conditions, many thousands of former workers regretted the loss of the traditions, camraderie and pride in workmanship that characterised their Midland working lives. Christchurch has an extensive bus network with bus routes serving most areas of the city and satellite towns. Nearly all bus routes traveled through the central city Bus Exchange before the earthquake but due to reduced passenger numbers since the earthquakes, especially in the central city, the bus network was reorganized to direct more localized services to 'hubs', such as major shopping centers, where they connect to the central station via core bus routes. ~Wikipedia

Exploring the Stepping Stones of Box Hill
Today I am out on a special jaunt with Julia Hartley and her son, Elijah. We're in Surrey, in the shadow of Box Hill, part of the Surrey Hills between Dorking and Leatherhead. We meet up with Matthew Holdsworth and his son, Josh, to investigate the ancient ford and crossing point of the river Mole. In place of the ford today are delightful stepping stones which provide a fun way to traverse the river without getting your feet wet.
The walk is peppered with an array of British broad leaf trees, including London Plane, Ash, Oak and Hazel. Others are Box, sloe, Walnut and Horse Chestnut.

Train Enthusiast's Video Diary 1985-10-13
On 13/10/1985, we joined The Karri Tourist Train tour from Manjimup, West Australia to Northcliffe, West Australia and return.
The tour ran through Karri, Marri and Jarrah forests and over a number of trestle bridges.
On this occasion the consist of old narrow-gauge, dog box carriages (no corridor and individual swing out doors for each compartment) was hauled by West Rail's diesel locomotive G51.
This video clip captured snippets of the journey from Manjimup to Northcliffe.
(It appears that the tour is now reduced to running between Pemberton and Northcliffe and is managed from Pemberton Railway Station by the Pemberton Tramway Company.)
