Envy of Kings: The Guildhall of London - Dr Simon Thurley
Simon Thurley looks at the history of the guildhall as a seat of power to rival that of Parliament and Monarchs:
The government of the City of London is older than parliament itself and its Guildhall is a rival to the Palace of Westminster. This makes the Lord Mayor a King in his own palace; but how has this been expressed in architecture?
This lecture looks at the architectural patronage of the City's Lord Mayors from earliest time to the present.
London has always been an architectural laboratory. Arguably it has been home to more invention in building types than any other city on earth. These four lectures look at London’s built environment through some great buildings and their creators and ask why and how has London sustained a reputation for architectural innovation?
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:
Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. There are currently over 1,800 lectures free to access or download from the website.

Members of the British royal family attended a celebratory event at London's Guildhall on Friday (10 JUNE 2016) ahead of a weekend of festivities marking Queen Elizabeth II's official 90th birthday.
Royals including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry attended the event following a thanksgiving service at St Paul's Cathedral.
The Queen's birthday has been a three-month affair starting with her real birthday in April.
The monarch's birthday is traditionally celebrated in June when London's weather can be more favorable.
Earlier in the day, a traditional gun salute took place to mark the 95th birthday of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen's husband.
The Queen and Prince Philip did not attend the Guildhall event.

UK: LONDON: PRESIDENT ZEMIN ATTENDS GUILDHALL RECEPTION
Natural Sound
Chinese president Jiang Zemin attended a reception at the Guildhall with the Lord Mayor on Wednesday.
He will also lunch with British Prime Minister Tony Blair as he continues his weeklong
visit in England.
Jiang is also due to meet with other political leaders at Buckingham Palace and visit a Chinese exhibition at the British Museum with Queen Elizabeth II.
Passionate about English literature the Chinese President payed a visit to the Globe theatre just before meeting the Lord Mayor, where four hundred years ago Shakespeare's famous plays were performed.
Throughout the day the President was followed at all times by a persistent band of pro-democracy demonstrators, many of them waving the Tibetan flag and holding up 'Free Tibet banners'.
There were a few minor incidents when pro-Tibetan protestors, shouting anti-Jiang slogans, attempted to block the path of the president's vehicle.
The tight security which itself has raised concerns in some quarters dealt swiftly with such incursions.
