Guild Houses on the Grand Place of Brussels
The Guild Houses are all around the Grand Place of Brussels, in between the larger buildings such as the Town Hall. They are partially gilded and decorated with statues on the facades or on top.

The Grand-Place is the central square of the City of Brussels. All over the world it is known for its decorative and aesthetic wealth. The Grand-Place is surrounded by the guild houses, the City Hall and the Maison du Roi.
The Grand-Place is considered as one of the most beautiful places of the world. The Grand-Place of Brussels was registered on the World Heritage List of the UNESCO in 1998.
History of the Grand-Place
At the Grand-Place, numerous historic events took place:
1523: the first Protestant martyrs, Hendrik Voes and Jan Van Essen, are burned by the Inquisition there
1568: the counts of Egmont and Hoorn are beheaded there
August 1695: during the War of the League of Augsbourg, most of the houses on the Grand-Place were destroyed during a bombardment of the City by the French troops of marshal De Villeroy. Only the facade and the tower of the City Hall, which were the target, and some stone walls resisted the flaming canon balls. The houses surrounding the square were quickly reconstructed, in stone this time, by the various guilds. Among these, the house of the Brewers guild which shelters the Brewers Museum today.

La Grand Place Brussels, Belgium
La Grand-Place’s earliest written reference goes back to the 12th century. It’s surrounded by guild houses. In the Middle Ages, each profession had its own guild. La Grand-Place is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The exteriors of most guildhall houses are masterfully decorated with baroque gables, heightened with gold, reminiscent of the status and wealth once prominent to its occupants.
The Maison des Ducs Brabant is home to seven of La Grand-Place’s guildhalls, the headquarters of the old millers, tanners, carpenters, woodworkers, and the stonemasons.

It’s true that a city means something different to everyone and to me it’s very interesting to rediscover Brussels through the eyes of visitors and locals. Through this post I wanted to show you some of the things that made me fall in love with Brussels. Hopefully, you will feel the same way too.
The Grand Place probably needs no introduction. A beautiful Unesco World Heritage sight, it’s surrounded by 17th century guild houses and never fails to impress. If you’re lucky enough to be in Brussels when the Flower Carpet is on, make sure to visit it – it’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen!
The Bois de la Cambre is probably the most beautiful green space in the city. It’s the place where I had my first picnic in Brussels and one of my favourite spots on a sunny day in Brussels. The terrace of the Chalet Robinson, boat rides and non-stop laughing… it’s linked with such good memories!
Whenever I ask people about their favourite places in Brussels, they always mention the Mont des Arts. I couldn’t agree more. It’s actually one of the best spots to watch the sunset in Brussels (I mean, just look at this!) or just admire the architecture. The fact that I’ve discovered this little cafe is just icing on the cake.
When talking about Brussels’ arcades, most people think of the stunning Galeries St Hubert. I really love this one though. A bit off the beaten path, hidden only for those who know it (as is the case with most great spots in Brussels), Galerie Bortier is a dreamy little place for vintage book lovers and photographers.
The Cinquantenaire is one of Brussels’ best parks and a space where various events take place on a regular basis. Whenever I have visitors over, I always take them to the top of the arcades for 360 views of the city (for free, may I add!)

BRUSSELS: The Grand Place (Grote Markt, Market Square), Belgium
SUBSCRIBE: - The Grand Place (Grote Markt, Market Square) in Brussels, Belgium. Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Brussels, officially the Brussels-Capital Region, is a region of Belgium comprising 19 municipalities, including the City of Brussels, which is the capital of Belgium.
Belgium, a country in Western Europe, is known for medieval towns, Renaissance architecture and as headquarters of the European Union and NATO. The country has distinctive regions including Dutch-speaking Flanders to the north, French-speaking Wallonia to the south and a German-speaking community to the east. The bilingual capital, Brussels, has ornate guildhalls at Grand-Place and elegant art-nouveau buildings.
Brussels, Belgium - Everard t'Serclaes Monument (2018)
Everard t'Serclaes (c. 1320 – 31 March 1388), lord of Kruikenburg (alternatively Cruyckembourg), was a citizen of Brussels, who was made famous by his recovery of that city from the Flemings.
After the death of John III of Brabant on 5 December 1355, his daughter Joanna and her husband, Wenceslaus, succeeded him as rulers of the duchy. Their succession was disputed by the count of Flanders, Louis de Male. Louis invaded Brabant and quickly seized Brussels. On the night of 24 October 1356, Everard scaled the city walls leading a group of patriots and drove the Flemings from the city. This enabled Joanna and Wenceslaus to make their Joyous Entry into the city.
Everard was later made schepen (alderman) of the city five times. As an old man he led the successful opposition to the selling of a section of crown land to Sweder of Abcoude, lord of Gaasbeek. A group led by Sweder's illegitimate son ambushed, beat, and mutilated Everard on the road from Lennik to Brussels. He died five days later as a result of the attack. In response, the citizens of Brussels, joined by allies from across Brabant, razed Gaasbeek Castle.
Everard is commemorated by a monument sculpted by artist Julien Dillens (1849–1904), which is located on Charles Buls street in Brussels, just off the Grand Place. It is said among locals that the statue of Everard t'Serclaes brings luck and grants the wishes of all who touch it. Many tourists touch (or rather rub) the statue, particularly the arm, because legend has it that rubbing the arm will ensure one's return to Brussels. Other parts are also touched frequently by the tourists such as the face of an angel, a dog, and one of the shields. This constant polishing keeps the body shining compared to the rest of the sculpture.
The City of Brussels is the largest municipality and historical centre of the Brussels-Capital Region, and the de jure capital of Belgium. Besides the strict centre, it also covers the immediate northern outskirts where it borders municipalities in Flanders. It is the administrative centre of the European Union, thus often dubbed, along with the region, the EU's capital city.
The City of Brussels is a municipality consisting of the central historic town and certain additional areas within the greater Brussels-Capital Region, namely Haren, Laeken and Neder-Over-Heembeek to the north, and Avenue Louise/Louizalaan and the Bois de la Cambre/Ter Kamerenbos park to the south.
On 1 January 2017, the City of Brussels had a total population of 176,545. The total area is 32.61 km2 (12.59 sq mi) which gives a population density of 5,475 inhabitants per square kilometre (14,180/sq mi). As of 2007, there were approximately 50,000 registered non-Belgians in the City of Brussels. In common with all the Brussels municipalities, it is legally bilingual (French–Dutch).
Karl Marx house in Brussels

Restaurant Le Cygne Brussels (Grand Place)
The Communist Manifesto (Das Kommunistische Manifest), originally titled Manifesto of the Communist Party (German: Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei), is a short 1848 publication written by the political theorists Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. It has since been recognized as one of the world's most influential political manuscripts. Commissioned by the Communist League, it laid out the League's purposes and program. It presents an analytical approach to the class struggle (historical and present) and the problems of capitalism, rather than a prediction of communism's potential future forms.
The book contains Marx and Engels' theories about the nature of society and politics, that in their own words, The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles. It also briefly features their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would eventually be replaced by socialism, and then eventually communism.

Grand Place, Manneken Pis, Waffles, and Chocolates in Brussels
Vlog#5 - A visit to Brussels in Belgium is not complete if you haven't tried their famous waffles, yummy chocolates, beers, and more! We were lucky enough to get an AirBnB accommodation courtesy of our cousin and her family who lives in Brussels. The apartment was just less than 3 minutes away from the Grand Place so what would one do if you have 2 days to spare in Brussels? Of course, you walk around, eat at some eateries and try their waffles, and chocolates!
The Grand Place in Brussels is called the Grote Markt which is the central square. It is close to the Central Station. So, if you are arriving by train to Brussels, you can get off at the Central Station and just few minutes walk and you will be at the heart of this famous square.
The square is surrounded by beautiful, and opulent looking Guildhalls, Town Hall, and the Museum of Brussels. An alley between the Town Hall, and Beer Museum will lead you to the famous Manneken Pis or the Peeing Boy. It is a small statue and one way to know you are near the statue is when you see plenty of tourists flocking in one area for a photo op. :) We got lucky that day and managed to snap a photo without other tourists. It was late in the afternoon and most tour groups have left.
Aside from that, you must also try the waffles, and the Belgian chocolates. They are really, really good! I decked my waffles with lots of strawberries and whipped cream. Yummy! We bought our waffles at the Le Funambule. As for chocolates, you can just try anything there. If you want the more expensive ones then go for Godiva, and Leonidas.
We also looked for the Jeanneke Pis. It is the female version of the Manneken Pis. It was a bid hard to find but we just asked around and managed to find it. I am a bit disappointed though. The Jeanneke Pis is behind a grilles so you can't take a decent photo of it. And just across the Jeanneke Pis is one of the known bars in Brussels - Delirium. We went inside for some fun photo ops because they have so many novelty decors of beers, kegs, etc. Any beer lovers would love to take a photo here or even stay for a cold beer.
We enjoyed the time we have spent here. It was a far cry from my first visit where it rained most of the time. Seeing the guild houses and other buildings during the day and past dusk with the lights illuminating the facade of these buildings, giving them beautiful golden glow. It's just beautiful.
