Everglades City (formerly known as Everglades)[4] is a city in Collier County, Florida, United States, of which it is the former county seat. As of the 2013 census, the population is 402.[5] It is part of the Naples–Marco Island Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Gulf Coast Visitor Center for Everglades National Park is in Everglades City.[6]

Everglades National Park, Florida - Flamingo Visitor Center HD (2016)
Everglades National Park is a U.S. National Park in Florida that protects the southern 20 percent of the original Everglades. In the United States, it is the largest tropical wilderness, the largest wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River, and is visited on average by one million people each year. It is the third-largest national park in the lower 48 states after Death Valley and Yellowstone. It has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site, and a Wetland of International Importance, one of only three locations in the world to appear on all three lists.
Overnight Kayak Camping Trip to Jewel Key in Everglades natl. Park
Our first trip and over night camping on Jewel key in the Everglades National park in southern Florida. Left from Everglades Gulf Coast Visitor Center in Everglades City on a Sunday afternoon just about high tide. Paddled our sea kayaks approx. 5 miles to Jewel Key, a remote mangrove island/key with a small beach that can be camped on. Alcohol stoves and more:

New River, Fort Lauderdale Outbound to the ICW Time Lapse
Transiting the New River in Fort Lauderdale, Florida is often the subject of many passionate conversations at the yacht club bar. Fact is, local knowledge is truly is key to a stress free passage, recently, someone has placed a sign at the start of the river “CH 9 for new river traffic”, this has saved many a visitor from suffering the yells of a local boater “turn on your radio to CH 9”!
At the start of the New River, where it meats the ICW, there is an area locally called “the cross roads”, there is a shoal in the center, refer to your charts as the day markers can be confusing and change often between the different waterways in the area. In fact, and the end of the video, you can see a owner operator just run aground and start to back off the submerged island that drys at MMLW.
This video starts up river at Marina Bay and ends at the ICW/New River Crossroads in Fort Lauderdale FL USA.
Here are some tips from my limited New River experiences.
Monitor VHF CH 9.
Announce security calls on VHF CH 9 at the start of your run and throughout depending on your size, location, current, towing, etc.
Traffic is “inbound” or “outbound” not “northbound”, “down stream”, “up river” and so on.
Down current has the right of way! And offer some curtesy to the owner operator running down street with the single screw sailboat or similar, these kinds of boats can’t just stop with the current on their stern.
The current changes direction with the tide. Andrew Avenue is a good published tide and current station.
Communicate on CH 9 and make passing arrangements before you meet at a bad spot on the river, you can see examples of this in my little video. Note that I had the current on my bow, so I was the giveaway vessel.

8) Note the “rush hour” closure times for the bridges on the river.
Bridges are closed to pleasure traffic: 7:30AM - 9:00AM and 4:30PM - 6:00PM Monday to Friday
9) Bridges are on demand via VHF CH 9, but will have to clear foot and auto traffic first. Call when the bridge is insight.
10) If a bridge just opened and you missed it, the bridge operator will clear some traffic then open for boat traffic when able.
11) The “Jungle Queen” or “JQ” is a big tour boat that runs the entire river and tends to slide around, you will here this boat on the VHF CH 9, make a passing arrangement is a safe area.
12) If you here a security call from a towing company like “Steel Towing”, they are likely towing a large vessel, also make passing arrangements in this case.
13) Learn the sound signal rules for passing and for blind corners for US inland waterways.
14) Long blast on blind corner….. The rules are quite clear on the matter, however, almost no one on this waterway follows this rule. One could say the locals are just “too cool” for this and rely on the VHF or home owners get upset with all the noise. Whatever the case, I choose to follow the law and I suggest you do also. You never know, a Captain may have just picked up a 120’ boat at the end of the river for the first time and has no idea river traffic is monitoring VHF CH 9….
15) No wake, my advice is, go as slow as you can to keep proper steerage, this can be pretty quick with a 4-5 knot current pushing you along.

Enjoy the drive into Everglades National Park. This drive begins in Homestead, and follows Florida State Road 9336 into the park, all the way to the end at the Flamingo visitor center.

Big Cypress National Preserve is a must see in America. If you are looking for adventure then this is your vacation destination. We were submerged into nature, viewed numerous wild life and had a fabulous time. #NationalParks #BigCypress
The canoe ride was free from Big Cypress park rangers... all you have to do is sign up at the visitor center. The canoe trips are offered 3 times a week for 8 couples. Each of the visitors centers offer a different view of wild life and offer free educational/interesting view of the preserve.

A Kayak Camping Trip to Jewel & Rabbit Keys Everglades Natl.Park HD GoPro
Filmed with a HD GoPro camera. A three day two night kayaking camping trip to both jewel key (first night), then Rabbit Key (2nd night). Timed a 'high' tide(3:30pm) at our departure from the Gulf Coast Visitor Center at Everglades City and 'rode' the tide out to Jewel Key for the 1st night. 2nd day we paddled to Rabbit Key and camped there for our 2nd and final night of this trip. This video is mostly of the 2nd day and Rabbit Key.

There are many ways to see the Everglades, including taking a boat trip from the Gulf Coast Visitor Center to see dolphins, birds and other wildlife and a tram tour at Shark Valley to view alligators and wading birds. There are also scenic drives, walking and bicycle trails, and paddling trails.

Everglades National Park is only a one hour drive from the hustle and bustle of Miami, but the park encompasses 1.5 million acres of tropical and subtropical habitat with one of the world’s most diverse ecosystems. It was for this very reason that Congress established the Everglades as a National Park in 1934. At least one million people from all over the world visit the Everglades each year. Notable Everglades animals include tree frogs, alligators, the American crocodile, manatee, Key deer, otters, and the Florida panther. The park is located along avian migratory routes, so birding is also a popular activity.
