For interns at the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab, hands-on experience means feeding octopi and shark by hand. They also journey to Apalachee Bay to collect sea critters to be used by teachers and researchers across the country. Their internship duties also include the many tasks they perform at the lab, from sea turtle rescue to leading tours. The experience not only increases their skill set, but also exposes them to new potential career paths. Part of the EcoAdventures in North Florida series.

Canterbury School Visits FWRI Specimen Collections
In May 2015 a group of kindergarten and first graders from the Canterbury School of Florida visited the FWRI Specimens Laboratory for an afternoon of hands-on learning and fun! Researchers taught the school children about some of the different shark species found in Florida waters, along with other marine fish and invertebrates that were on display at the lab. It was a great opportunity for the children to test their knowledge, ask questions and see preserved marine fish and invertebrates in person. Our video includes some great moments from the school tour, and we want to thank the Canterbury School for allowing the kids to come visit the institute!

You're INVITED to Little Girl's Sea Turtle release 12/29/16
YOU ARE INVITED!
On Thursday, December 29th. We will be releasing our beloved resident leatherback sea turtle, “Little Girl” back into the ocean. We have raised her for the past 10 years and everyone has loved seeing her. The release will take place at 3pm at Bald Point State Park, located near Alligator Point, in Franklin County.
Our friends at the Florida Wildlife Conservation commission are approving of the release because she is considered a sub-adult sea turtle and is approaching reproduction age.
Originally we received her as part of the National Marine Fishery Service’s “Captive Rearing Program” located in Galveston, Texas, where loggerhead hatchlings are loved and pampered for 2 years and then released.
So please schedule a trip down to the beach and be a part of Little Girl’s send-off back into her mother ocean, we hope to see you there!
