Welcome to Beijing! - A walk in the Hutongs.
Today May is taking us to see the Hutongs in Beijing.
Are you ready?
CHINA: BEIJING: HUTONGS FALLING VICTIM TO BULLDOZERS
Mandarin/Nat
As Beijing's old alley ways and traditional courtyard houses continue to fall victim to the bulldozers, many people are facing a relocation which threatens to disrupt or even shatter their lives.
Known as hutongs, these alleyways used to crisscross Beijing in a picturesque maze.
But rapid development and construction are not only changing the face of Beijing -
they are destroying a traditional lifestyle.
It is said that no one knows exactly how many hutongs meander through Beijing.
But the estimated 2-thousand 600 alleyways and their traditional courtyard houses are becoming an endangered species.
These, sometimes ancient, homes offer respite from the city's increasing hustle and bustle.
Courtyards allow residents to plant flowers in an effort to retain a bit of nature in the midst of a concrete city.
But the poetry of hutong life exists as much in the alleyways themselves as in the courtyards hidden behind their doors.
Itinerant peddlers such as vegetable sellers still wander the streets creating a village atmosphere.
Old women need not go far to find their friends and share the latest neighborhood gossip.
But now, this country-like lifestyle in the city's heart is slowly giving way to a slew of development projects.
In one central Beijing road renovation project alone, more than 60-thousand
square meters of housing, and almost 6-thousand households, have been destroyed.
Most of these people can only stand back and watch as the blades of the bulldozers clear the way for yet another wide avenue or shopping center.
But Zhao Jingxin has refused to just sit back and accept the destruction of his 400 year-old home.
At the ripe old age of 80, he is waging a battle against the city government.
Zhao believes the authorities are destroying a precious historical heritage as they demolish more and more Qing dynasty houses.
Proving the historical and cultural value of your home with stone carvings such as this one is often not enough to keep hungry developers away.
But perhaps even more important than history is the lives of individuals which may be shattered by an inevitable relocation.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
If you have lived in a courtyard house and must move into an apartment building, I fear it will be very difficult. Furthermore, for people like us who have lived here for 50 years, to change one's lifestyle is not an easy thing. In Chinese law, there is a regulation for old people which says you should protect their housing.
SUPER CAPTION: Zhao Jingxin, 80 year-old retired professor
Despite the threat of protests and discontent, construction projects continue to rise up over the rubble of destroyed neighborhoods.
And for many who do not have the connections or means of Zhao, confrontation with demolition workers and police is the only way to be heard.
Originally, 1-thousand 300 families were housed in this central Beijing hutong district.
Today, only twenty families are left.
The government has offered compensation to those forced to relocate.
But some feel they are being offered an unfair deal and refuse to move.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
Three families are supposed to live in a one-bedroom apartment. What are we going to do? They've said 'we'll solve this problem when you move out'. But I think that once we've moved out, we won't be able to solve the problem anymore.
SUPER CAPTION: Mrs Chang, middle-aged woman about to be evicted
As the document he holds up proves, this man owns five houses - all slated for imminent destruction.
And the rent he collects from them is his only livelihood.
So it is no wonder he is prepared to fight with his life to save his home.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
SUPER CAPTION: Bu Huaijiang, man about to be evicted
