Tamansari Yogyakarta - Sumur Gumuling Indonesia
The mystic Water Castle Taman Sari in Yogyakarta
The Taman Sari Water Castle in Yogyakarta is one of the most famous sights in the city. It is known for the instagrammable spots, which means spots you can take great pictures for Instagram. This fact that visitors love to take pictures there simply means that it is a very aesthetic place. And it definitely is! The architecture of the castle, the tunnel and the surrounding buildings is simply fantastic.
This place is called water castle because it has three swimming pools in it. One for the sultan, one for the guests and the third for the children. Besides the castle itself there is a tunnel which leads to a shrine called Sumur Gumuling which is well known for its patio where four stairs led to a platform in the middle. this is where you want to stand and take a photo and it is also a spot i will always keep in remembrance.

Underground Mosque of Yogyakarta.mp4
Masjid Bawah Tanah (Sumur Gumuling), Yogyakarta
The Underground Mosque, known as Sumur Gumuling, in Yogyakarta was built upon a circular well in 1750. The building is totally underground, surrounding the well (sumur).
Four stairways above the well meets at the center, forming a small stage and a fifth staircase leads to the upper second floor. These stairways symbolizes the Five Islamic Principles, the highest staircase referring to the pilgrimage to Mecca for Muslims..
The Imam would stand on the small stage formed by the set of stairways, taking advantage of the excellent acoustics of the circular building to deliver his sermon.
The mosque is part of the greater complex of Taman Sari, where underground tunnels link to the Royal Palace, the Water Castle, a pleasure bath complex for the Sultan, his family and concubines and to the South Java Sea. Many of the tunnels are closed for safety reasons.
Much restoration work need to be done in this Complex before it can be officially be listed as an UNESCO Heritage Site.

(Wikipedia)

The element of myth in Sumur Gumuling - English Department UGM 2014
Myths are considered sacred stories that deal with origins and explanations of natural phenomena and human institutions (Allyn & Bacon Anthology of Traditional Literature; Judith V. Lechner, 2004.)
Taman Sari, which is also best-known as Istana Air (Water Castle), is one of many historical places in Special District of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Located near the Pasar Ngasem (Ngasem Market) and Keraton, a lot of tourists have come to see the incredibly beautiful architecture of the castle. To enter the area, you are required to buy tickets. The price is Rp 5.000,- (about USD 0.5) for domestic visitors. As you pass the gate where tour guides sit on a bench, welcoming the guests, an official will ask for your ticket. After that, you will be able to go in. The main attraction of this site is the pool which had been used by the family members of Sultan. The visitors usually take pictures with a nice backdrop in it. Then, you can walk a little bit further to see Pulau Cemeti (Cemeti Island).
In Taman Sari, there is an important building that is known as Sumur Gumuling. It was built around 1758 in Sultan Hamengkubuwono I governing, which was in colonialism era. This building is a circling underground path (tunnel) which has 2 floors which is connected with the 5 stairs. Below the odds number of the stairs, there is a spring which was used to be a place to take wudlu (a cleaning process before praying in Islam). It symbolized the 5 pillars of Islam. Actually, in one part of this building there was another path, a long one, which was branched in many directions, such as path to a Sultan's palace or Segaran Kidul. However, you cannot find this path now, because this path had been closed for a safety. To see Sumur Gumuling, you have to travel more because the place is far from the main gate of Taman Sari. You will see a building which is placed lower than the ground. You will have to go downstairs and walk in the dark because of limited light there. After a long walk, you can finally see Sumur Gumuling there. Long time ago, Sultan, the Head of Yogyakarta Palace used Sumur Gumuling as a place to held meeting to arrange the strategy fight against colonialist. Because at that time the area of Taman Sari was covered by the water, therefore, just a few of people who knew that under the water there was a secret place for sultan and his fellows. Moreover, if colonialist suddenly attacked the palace, Sultan would escape through the long tunnel.
Besides that, Sumur Gumuling was also used as a place to take a pray together although the men and women had to pray in different floor. If the men prayed in the second floor, the women were in the lower floor. Most of the people believe that this building has the element of myth which relates to the Queen of the South Sea, Nyai Roro Kidul. The reason is because the Head of Yogyakarta palace often took a meditation in this place, especially on the crossway (of the 4 stairs). This meditation is suspected to be a way to summon Nyai Roro Kidul. Then, she would come up from the well which was usually used to take wudlu. Sultan and Nyai Roro Kidul had a good relationship. It was caused by the Leader of Mataram Kingdom, Panembahan Senopati who had a relationship with Nyai Roro Kidul. Hence, Mataram itself now had been divided into Yogyakarta and Surakarta palace. That was the reason why both Yogyakarta and Surakarta palace are still keeping in touch with the Queen of the South Sea. Nyai Roro Kidul gave a protection to the Head of Keraton Yogyakarta. She helped Yogyakarta palace to fight against the enemies with her supernatural power. Although she was invisible, but no one, especially Javanese people, doubt her power. In colonialism era, Nyai Roro Kidul also took a part to help Jogja Palace dragged down the colonialist. However, have a relationship with the Queen of the South Sea for Yogyakarta Palace is still existing until now. It is proven by some ceremonies which are held to dedicate her, such as on Sultan Hamengkubuwono's birthday. There is also an annual event called Labuhan which often takes place in Parangtritis.

Travel Log Visiting Taman Sari (Water Castle) | #jogja
Taman Sari also known as Taman Sari Water Castle is a site of a former royal garden of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta. It is located about 2 km south within the grounds of the Kraton, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Built in mid 18th century, the Taman Sari had multiple functions, such as a resting area, a workshop, a meditation area, a defense area, and a hiding place.[2]
Taman Sari consisted of four distinct areas: a large artificial lake with islands and pavilions located in the west, a bathing complex in the centre, a complex of pavilions and pools in the south, and a smaller lake in the east. Today only the central bathing complex is well preserved, while the other areas have been largely occupied by the Kampung Taman settlement.
Since 1995 the Yogyakarta Palace Complex including Taman Sari is listed as a tentative World Heritage Site.

Wiwitan Ritual in Jembangan, Magelang
Diupload pada 21 Juni 2014
According Judith V. Lechner in her book Allyn & Bacon Anthology of Traditional Literature Myths are considered sacred stories that deal with origins and explanations of natural phenomena and human institution. Holding that as compass of our observation, we depart to search for Myths surrounding us.
This video is about Wiwitan Ritual that's being held before marriage parties around Kyai Surodipo Tombstones in Jembangan, Magelang.
Magelang is one of six large cities in Central Java. It is located in the middle of the Magelang Regency, between Mount Merbabu and Mount Sumbing in Central Java Province, Indonesia . Magelang is located 43 km north of Yogyakarta, 15 km north of Mungkid and 75 km south of Semarang, the capital of Central Java.
Wiwitan derived from the Javanese word Wiwit which means beginning or starting. Wiwitan means to begin something or to start something. This tradition is widely spread around Javanese and Sundanese people. It was meant as a ritual or religious practice to thanks God for his blessing that they can hold this big event and pray for the event to run smoothly until the end.
This ritual begins with the holder of event cooking a banquet before the ritual starts. The meals then being delivered to petilasan (or where the remains of past) Kyai Surodipo and they invite surrounding neighbour particularly children in that area to come. They then pray together with certain ceremonial guidelines and eat the banquet afterwards.
Kyai Surodipo is a big figure around Jembangan. It was said that he came from merapi in the form of big snake-like dragon to protect people around Tidar so that the evil being resided in Tidar Hill called Kyai Semar couldn't harm them. He took role as protector of people around there while Syekh Subakir went up and defeated Kyai Semar.
This ritual was meant as prayer so that the event will run smoothly until the end as well as to strengthen the bonds of people so that they may talk to each other and help each other. Not only that, it also meant as thanks to God that gave them plenty of fortune so that they can hold the event.
Now move to particular things that catch our eyes there. While they cook for this ritual, they must not savour even just a drop of the meal. We were being told that it was forbidden to savour the meal even if it just to taste whether the spice is right or not. One who broke this taboo is believed to have bad luck in the form of permanently dislocated jaws or other dire mouth regions problems afterwards. We were sceptical at first. How come?
Then we were told that several people unaware or didn't believe that savour it. In time span of a week, they have dire mouth problems until now. Upon seeing our sceptical face, they guide us to Mrs. Poniman home and they said that she had tasted the meal while cooking and until now, she has permanent dislocated jaws.
There was also another taboo around there too. They must absolutely never forget to hold wiwitan when they have a big event.
Why is it again? It's because when they did forget, it was believed that misfortunes will occurred there. The misfortunes vary from broken relationship, illness, unfortunate accident, or supernatural events. Once again, we were being told about something bizarre like a big pan that flee so high and never being found again without any reason, about the relatives that suddenly had illness after event, or water in kettle that disappeared and re-appear in the newlywed room. Our source person also told the event in detailed version and told us in where it happened too.
Around this area, Wiwitan has become some sort of tradition that was held inside little house build around Kyai Surodipo Tombstone. Everyone just do it without asking for reason. When we ask why the ritual must be held in that place, they just said that it's a tradition since long time ago. Why it was being held there or when did they start to do this is lost in the count of time.
In conclusion, the ritual called wiwitan that was being held there was a part of tradition originated from certain myth and taboo that invite bizarre event there. Even until now, the people in Jembangan believes that with wiwitan, their big events like marriage will run smoothly and not broken halfway.

The Element of Myth in Kareta Kanjeng Nyai Jimad
Indonesia has never been a monarch country, but thanks to the Special District of Yogyakarta that still has the form of sultanate, one can found a number of royal carriages here in Indonesia. There are a total of 23 royal carriages kept in the Rotowijayan Museum, a museum that specifically keeps royal carriages of the Sultans of Yogyakarta. Each of the carriages has its own function. Some are used as transportation for the King and Queen when they need to have a sight, and the others are needed to carry dancers, bride and groom, and even the dead.
Throughout the 23 royal carriages, one is deemed to be sacred. It is called Kanjeng Nyai Jimad. This cart was used during the reign of Hamengkubuwana I until Hamengkubuwana III. It took 8 horses to pull this carriage. It is the oldest cart made in Netherland 1570 as a gift from General Governor Jacob Mossel to Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwana I. But, the mystic version of this carriage's origin pops up. It is said that Kanjeng Nyai Jimad carriage was belong to Nyi Roro Kidul that people assure as the goddess of the South Sea. One time, when servants from Keraton were fishing, the fishing-rod accidentally hooked the carriage.
It is sacred because it contains some elements of myth. But before talking deeper about the elements of it, one should know the definition of myth. It is 'a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some being or hero or event, with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation, especially one that is concerned with deities or demigods and explains some practice, rite, or phenomenon of nature'. According to William Hansen, there are 12 elements of myth. One of them is the 'characters are often nonhuman - e.g. gods, goddesses, supernatural beings, first people'. Therefore, by that definition, the element of myth in the carriage is that it consist an imaginary and fictious figure, who is the great goddess from the South Sea, Nyi Roro Kidul.
The name Kanjeng Nyai Jimad came from the Sultan himself. As a Sultan, he has a privilege to name the carriage whatever he wants. However, people believe that the name was to represent Nyi Roro Kidul. At the front part of the carriage, there is a sculpture of a woman figure that puts her hands up as if she is spurring the carriage. According to one of our interviewee, it symbolizes women's role as a 'supporter'. It emphasizes the women superiority against men.
Every Friday night, the care-taker of the carriage will put a wreath around the sculpture's neck, along with some arrangement of offering that they put on the floor in front of the figurous sculpture. The Javanese believe they need to give offerings to reflect their manner and etiquette to others, especially to the nature, elder, and things that they consider to have guardian(s). The offering consists of bananas, a glass of water, flowers, pandan leaves, and some amount of money. Each of the offering has its own meaning. The bananas reflect our purposes in life and hope to succeed in building our future. Flowers and water represent the prime needs of human life. Pandan leaves symbolize corps, and money reflects welfare. The offerings are frequently replaced for the sake of freshness every Friday night which people believe as the time when the invisible beings are come to earth to visit their children.
While for the maintenance, a special ceremony to clean Kanjeng Nyai Jimad is held annually, conducted once in a year, on Kliwon Tuesday or Friday in Suro Month. The ceremony is called Jamasan. In Javanese, the word Jamasan itself has a literal meaning, which is to 'clean' and to 'purify'. But, behind the literal meaning, people of Keraton do the Jamasan because it has the ability to cast the bad spirit out.Jamasan requires some ingredients; water mixed with lime slices and flowers, and duster for purifying the kingdom heritage. Lime is chosen because it symbolizes the bitter and sour when human receiving trials and obstacles from God. Furthermore, for the Javanese , flowers give philosophical meaning related to the hope so that one can get the 'fragrances' for life, or the positive teachings from the elder (ancestors). Some argues that if one suddenly smells the fragrance of flower around us, it means the elder is nearby, because s/he has implemented their positive teachings. In addition, limes and flowers smell good. Thousands of citizens attend this ritual, because they believe that the water used to wash carriage has some special powers related to health. Moreover, the water can also be used as a bad spirit repellents.
All in all, Javanese really believe that Kareta Kanjeng Nyai Jimad is one of the heirlooms belongs to the Kingdom that needs to be treated good in order to get benefits from it.
