Simon King visited Gunnersbury Triangle Nature Reserve (just opposite Chiswick Park tube station in London) on the 100th birthday of The Wildlife Trusts. Just before local schoolchildren arrived for some pond-dipping in the sunshine, he recorded this special message about the reserve.

West London Orbital Railway route with ‘5’ 73096, ‘U’ 31625, 'Britannia' 70013 & Ivatt 46521

West London Orbital Railway is a proposal being worked on by the West London Alliance of Local Authorities for an Overground route from Hounslow to Hendon & West Hampstead. The service would bring back local passenger traffic, last seen in 1902, to the Midland Railway Acton branch opened 1868 with a South curve at Cricklewood added in 1875. Local passenger traffic would also return to the southern extremities, of the North & South Western Junction line of 1853, south of South Acton Junction. Apart from its first 16 years, until the Kew Curve to Kew Bridge station opened, the original line from Kew East Junction only had this traffic from 2000 to 2002 with Anglia Railways experimental London Crosslink service from the Great Eastern Main Line via the North London Line to Basingstoke. The Kew Curve round to Kew Bridge station had until 1940 been the terminus of alternate North London trains from Broad Street.
I am hoping to give a view of this central portion of the route with a touch of preserved steam to add interest. We start at Hounslow station where Standard ‘5’ 73096 is taking on water before leaving with 'The Amberley Rambler' from the Mid Hants on Saturday 29th May 1999, then move to the Great West Road bridge by Kew East Junction to pick up this train again running up towards the junction with the proposed site of a new Lionel Road station in the area of the bridge carrying this road in the background, the Kew Curve can be seen on the left, and the land inside the triangle was once filled with sidings originally used by the Midland Railway. We then move to the footbridge at Acton South station and start by picking up on the two level crossings over Bollo Lane, first on the link to Gunnersbury then on the route to Kew East Junction which could see greatly increased frequencies if the Orbital comes to fruition, and whose future will consequently need to be considered. The train here is I believe a test run for SR ‘U’ 31625 again from the Mid Hants, with an Eastbound Piccadilly train passing over it, and the date I have is Friday 1st August 1997. We have now joined the route of North London traffic which runs up through Acton crossing the Uxbridge road where the 607 Trolley buses run and into Acton Central station which is represented by two stills from 1982 with ‘501’ EMUs in them. The line continues passing under Western Avenue and then crosses the Great Western mainline, which is represented by another 1982 still taken from the Western Avenue bridge over the GWML, and shows on the left the connection from the GWML to the North & South Western Junction line. A little further on the N&SW crosses the Central line and the remains of the GW Birmingham direct line and the latter’s connection with the West London, 1982 stills from both sides of the bridge the close up being from the east. It is likely that this section of double track at Acton Wells Junction between the GWML connection and the divergence of the Midland’s Acton Branch would need widening, with this bridge included, if the Orbital is to be introduced. Next we look back to Acton Wells Junction from Old Oak Lane bridge in December 1994 with a ‘313’ EMU running down to Richmond, the Midland Acton branch can just about be made out coming in from the right towards the signal box. Moving up this Midland branch to its bridging of the full six running lines of the GC & MET at Neasden we look East from Neasden Lane bridge just opposite the station entrance and view a London Victoria to Sheffield rail tour headed by 'Britannia' 70013 'Oliver Cromwell’ crossing followed by an ‘A’ Stock train heading for Baker Street on Saturday 9th May 2009, then we mount Dudden Hill Lane bridge and see the bridge from the East picking up a southbound ‘Jubilee Line’ train. This is all I have on this branch, but can recommend ‘Cab Ride 027 Acton to St Pancras Churchyard’ and 028 on You Tube from ‘oldskidmark’.
Finally we return to the Kew Bridge area, starting on the Great West Road bridge by Kew East Junction this time looking north to the Signal box where we see the afternoon Kensington Olympia Anticlockwise Circular Santa special with Ivatt 2-6-0 46521 and a Network South East liveried ‘73’ bringing up the rear take the Kew Curve to Kew Bridge station Sunday 4th December 1994, and the same train without the ‘73’, passing through the abandoned platforms at Kew Bridge station the day before.

Simon King joins over 100 celebrities, scientists, and organisations to stop the badger cull. Soon to start in Somerset (license to shoot 2000 free running badgers) and also Gloucester (license to shoot 3000 free running badgers) the pilot trials are purely to see the humaneness of shooting badgers with a view to shooting over 100 000 badgers in the next 20 years.

The joint statement reads;
We the undersigned ask the Government to stop the badger cull and to implement instead the more sustainable and humane solution of vaccination, improved testing and better bio-security.

My Observatory - Bill, Hampstead Heath, London

Bill has spent much of his life on Hampstead Heath. We started from Llandybie and walked to Carmel National Nature Reserve. 38 people enjoyed a walk that offered lovely panoramic views of the area.

Stag rut at Richmond park

While at Richmond park last summer during the deer mating season, I found myself hearing loud, throaty sounds from the Red deer calling to each other. As I followed the sounds, I found myself at a road with a large herd of male and female deer on the other side. After I'd been watching them for few minutes it all kicked off and two deer stags had at it with their monumentally huge antlers while I filmed, slightly glad off the barrier of moving vehicles seperating me from the beautiful but definetely wild animals
