[Seoul Museum of History - Gyeonggyojang House]
Welcome to Gyeonggyojang House, Historic Site No. 465
-
Gyeonggyojang House was used as a government building by the provisional government of the Republic of Korea when they returned to Korea following liberation in 1945. It is where Baekbeom Kim Koo, the premier of the provisional government, devoted himself to achieving unification up to the moment of his death.

Let's watch the video and learn more about Gyeonggyojang!

Using IoT sensors and augmented reality features,... this smartphone treasure hunt game takes you back 100 years,... to Korea's independence movement and the creation of its provisional government in April, 1919.
You virtually participate in the making of the provisional government,... by becoming the main character,... rather than just learning about history as an observer.
With a confidential envelope in hand,... and the game app on your phone,... you set out to unlock each stage and solve the riddles.
Clues can be found in the nearby Deoksugung Palace,... Seoul Anglican Cathedral and Gyeonggyojang -- which hosted the provisional government's final office.

Virtual reality goggles take you on a 360-degree tour of historically significant sites,... such as memorials for independence activists Kim Gu and Ahn Chang-ho.
The 360-degree view of the sites and the short clips and subtitles were great. It really hit home -- the importance of our provisional goverment.
Robots running on Korea's super-fast 5G wireless network,... write out the Declaration of Independence,... and draw the flag of the provisional government.
I like the writing in hand. The robots. So cool.
You can also throw your fists up and down in the air, chanting manse or long live Korean independence,... echoing the cries that filled the nation 100 years ago.
The experiential booths in Gwanghwamun will run until next weekend,... but you can enjoy the treasure hunt until mid-June.

(Cheonggyecheon Museum)

March First Centennial / KBS뉴스(News)
[Anchor Lead]
President Moon Jae-in has proposed that South and North Korea jointly celebrate the March 1st Movement for Korean independence, which marks its centennial next year. He asked the joint commemorative project committee, which was launched yesterday, to come up with projects that the two sides can do together.
[Pkg]
President Moon Jae-in said that he had discussed with North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un about organizing joint commemorative projects to mark the centennial of the March 1st independence movement. He made the announcement at the launching ceremony of the committee overseeing the centennial celebration of the March 1st movement and the establishment of Korea's provisional government.
[Soundbite] Pres. Moon Jae-in: On April 27th, Chairman Kim Jong-un and I discussed organizing joint commemorative projects for the centennial of the March 1st Movement and included the objective in the Panmunjeom Declaration.
It is stated in the Panmunjeom Declaration that joint events will be organized for days that are meaningful for both South and North Korea. President Moon stressed that the next 100 years should aim for peace on the Korean Peninsula. He also mentioned the need to reconcile the history of the two Koreas, since the seven-decade long division and antagonism have split even the history of Korea's independence movement. He asked the committee to come up with joint projects that can be implemented by both sides. The organizing committee for the centennial of the March 1st Movement and the establishment of the provisional government is comprised of civilians and government officials, with ordinary citizens participating fully in the design of celebratory events.
ARIRANG NEWS 14:00 S. Korea pushes ahead with plans for inter-Korean talks
ARIRANG NEWS 14:00
Hello and welcome. This is Arirang News. Live from Seoul, I′m Laah Hyun-kyung. The top stories making headlines at this hour...
South Korea awaits North Korea′s response on holding inter-Korean talks. This... while Pyongyang condemns Washington′s newest sanctions on North Korea.
Direct investments in Korea from overseas reach their highest level in 12 years. Chinese investments soar while those from Japan shrink. The biggest amount comes from the U.S.
The search operation for the missing AirAsia flight resumes. This... after four more bodies are recovered on Sunday... bringing the total to 34 following a week of search efforts.
Title: S. Korea pushes ahead with plans for inter-Korean talks, despite N. Korea-U.S. tensions
North Korea says the U.S. sanctions against the regime are a typical way of Washington showing hostility against Pyongyang.
South Korea… did support Washington′s decision, but is still waiting to hear back from North Korea on whether the two Koreas will sit down for talks this year.
For this report, here′s Connie Lee. South Korea plans to push ahead with plans for inter-Korean talks, despite the recent flare up in tension between North Korea and the United States.
The spokesperson from Seoul′s unification ministry says its proposal for high-level talks with Pyongyang remains on the table despite Washington′s announcement of sanctions against the North.
The country′s state-run media lashed out at the U.S. on Sunday, saying the new sanctions clearly demonstrate Washington′s hostility toward the regime.
The policy persistently pursued by the U.S. to stifle the DPRK , groundlessly stirring up bad blood towards it, would only harden its will and resolution to defend the sovereignty of the country.
The U.S. has slapped new sanctions on THREE North Korean organizations and TEN individuals... for Pyongyang′s alleged cyber attack on Sony Pictures, which produced the film The Interview a comedy about an assassination attempt on North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un.
However, as North Korea intensified its rhetoric against the U.S., the communist state has not criticized the South, as usual, with verbal attacks.
Pyongyang′s main newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun [ ], reported no criticism of Seoul on Sunday.... and North Korea′s main propaganda website, Uriminzokkiri, stated that the two Koreas should work together.
Experts say North Korea has a motive.
North Korea wants to show the U.S. sanctions will be ineffective... by improving relations with the South.
In the meantime, South Korea continues to wait on North Korea... to respond to its talks proposal.
Connie Lee, Arirang News.

This friday, Koreans will celebrate the 100th anniversary of a very important historic event that helped the nation break free from Japan's oppressive colonial rule.
Ahead of the centennial of the March 1st Independence Movement, President Moon Jae-in emphasized the importance of Korea taking control in deciding the Peninsula's fate.
Shin Se-min tells us more.
With Korea set to mark the 100th anniversary of the country's March First Independence Movement and the establishment of the provisional government,… President Moon Jae-in highlighted the importance of Korea's leadership in deciding the fate of the country and the Peninsula at large.
Taking the weekly Cabinet meeting outside the parameters of a public facility-- to a memorial of an independence fighter,… the president said the country had come a long way since a hundred years ago... when it was under the colonial rule, and unable to decide its own fate.
Today, our status in the international community has completely shifted. We deserve to enjoy the self-respect pride.
Emphasizing that the country is only one of seven countries in the world with more than 50-million people and a per capita income of 30-thousand U.S. dollars,… the president said Koreans must take control of its own destiny.
He also took pride... that his country is now getting more attention and acknowledgements from around the world... for its role in managing changes on the Korean Peninsula.
We are no longer in the periphery of history. I hope we open up a new era with pride and confidence, that the strength to decide our course for the next 100 years rests within us.
Also ahead of the Kim-Trump summit in Vietnam,... President Moon had previously called for preparation on resuming inter-Korean economic cooperation,... something he said was required for Seoul to take control of the fate of the Korean Peninsula.
In time for the anniverary of the 100th Independence Movement this week-- the government also conferred the Republic of Korea Medal to Yu Gwan-sun, a female martyr who symbolized the March 1st Independence Movement.
It's an upgrade from the third-highest civilian order she had been given before.

President Moon pays tribute to Korea's independence fighters ahead of 100th anniversary..
This Friday will be the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement... in which Koreans demanded liberation from Japanese imperial rule.
President Moon Jae-in, this morning, paid tribute to those independence fighters.
He visited the cemetery where Korea buried the founding members of its provisional government which was set up in April 1919 in Shanghai.
That cemetary is in Hyochang Park in Seoul.
The tribute to those independence fighters represents President Moon's recognition of the provisional government as the direct predecessor of the present-day Republic of Korea.
That's in contrast to earlier administrations whose view was that the Republic of Korea began with the nation's liberation much later in 1945.

Special exhibition commemorating centennial of Independence Movement
A special exhibition is held to mark the 100th anniversary of the March 1st independence movement and establishment of the Korean Provisional Government.
The Cultural Heritage Administration presents a rare collection of personal items, letters and documents belonging to independence fighters.
Lee Min-sun takes us to Seodaemun Prison History Hall.
At this historic place where Korean independence activists were tortured and executed during the 1910 to 1945 Japanese colonial period, cultural assets are on display to show people the lives and background of those activists.
A poem written by Hwang Hyeon just before he killed himself in protest against Japan's invasion, and his collection of newspaper articles about fellow independence activists, are on public display for the first time.
Registered as pieces of cultural heritage last year, two handwritten poems by national poet and independence activist Lee Yuksa are also on display. These are the only two handwritten poems of his that are known to still exist.
Some of the items show the independence activities of Lee Bong-chang. These include a letter he wrote before attempting to kill Japanese Emperor Hirohito with a grenade, and a bank record showing funds used to support his activities.
“Visitors can also look through some almost five-thousand personal information cards and prison records of independence activists who were imprisoned for fighting against the Japanese.”
This collection of personal information cards includes some 230 activists from North Korea and 33 female activists who are not well known.
These cards provide photos and detailed information on their activities and show that people from all ages, genders, and regions played significant roles in the March 1st movement.
This exhibition commemorates the centennial of the March 1st movement, the largest anti-Japanese movement in Korea's history. We want to share the historic meaning with all people through pieces of cultural heritage.
This exhibition runs till April 21st. To preserve the cultural properties, the originals will be only be displayed on the opening day, March 1st and April 11th, the anniversary of the establishment of the provisional government.

Historic Movement / KBS뉴스(News)
[Anchor Lead]
There was a similar yet lesser-known anti-Japanese movement right after the March 1st uprising in Seoul. It was started by elementary school students in Incheon and efforts to shed light on this important historical event are now underway.
[Pkg]
A monument commemorating the centennial of the March 1st Movement is being erected at an elementary school in Incheon. Preparation is in full swing ahead of the March 1st centennial celebration slated to be held here on the first of next month. Opened in 1907, this school was the cradle of Incheon's first anti-Japanese uprising held on March 6th, 1919, just five days after the historic March 1st event. Four third-graders led other students to take joint leave from school for four days to distribute the Korean Declaration of Independence to citizens and engage in other resistance activities. The students even severed the phone line of the principal's office to prevent him from reporting their activities to Japanese police.
[Soundbite] Jang Sun-hui(Pres. Changyeong Elementary School Alumni Assn.) : They stood out because they took part in the uprising, claiming that they couldn't just stand idly by in this dismal era.
Because of their involvement, two students were imprisoned and two others were sentenced to 90 floggings each.
[Soundbite] Lee Yeong-ran(Granddaughter of Sohn Chang-sin(One of 4 student leaders)) : He was too young to get flogged, so others petitioned for him. So, he was in prison for four months before he was found innocent.
The city of Incheon used to hold the March 1st ceremony at the Incheon Culture and Art Center every year. But for 2019, the city chose this place for the centennial celebration to publicize the school's historical importance.
[Soundbite] Heo In-hwan(Dong-gu Mayor, Incheon) : The centennial ceremony will be held here because it's the historic cradle of the independence movement in Incheon.
Dong-gu District of Incheon plans to keep promoting the significance of Inc

This Friday will mark the 100th anniversary of the March First Movement... carried out to free Korea from Japanese colonial rule.
And for the centennial, officials say the government will award a posthumous medal of honor to a heroine of the movement, Yu Gwan-sun.
Arrested for organizing protests against Japan at age 17, she was imprisoned and tortured and died before her 18th birthday.
Yu was posthumously awarded the Independence Medal in 1962, but this one is different.
That was the third highest of five levels of state honors -- this one will be either the first or second highest.

I'm a flag
2019 marks the centennial anniversary of the March First Independence Movement and the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea.
Amid the growth of imperialism in the early 19th century, East Asia saw Japan forcibly annex the Korean Empire.
To regain their sovereignty, Koreans started the March First Independence Movement in 1919, an event that led to the formation of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea.
We wish to share and commemorate with everyone in the world
the spirit embedded in both the movement and the provisional government, which championed the universal human principles of nonviolence and peace.

They also proclaimed a declaration of independence justifying Korea's sovereignty and Koreans' determination to fight against Japanese colonists. Proclaimed in the capital of the colonists' country, the February 8th Declaration of Independence set the stage for the March 1st Independence Movement and the establishment of the Korean provisional government. A special event was held on the eve of the centennial anniversary of the declaration at the YMCA building, where the declaration was recited a century ago. Some 200 ethnic Koreans and students studying in Japan attended the event to pay homage to the spirit of independence. They made a pledge to usher in a new era in the century to come.
