Dharamsala set to host its first international cricket match.
his picturesque Himalayan hill station, which has lured hundreds of thousands of Westerners since Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama settled here in 1960, is all set witness its first international cricket match this month.he Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) is leaving no stone unturned to make the fifth and final ODI between India and England Jan 27 at its new showpiece venue, located at an altitude of 4,000 feet above sea level, with the mighty snow-clad Dhauladhar Ranges forming the backdrop, a warm and welcoming affair.
If everything goes as planned, the stadium has the potential to become a permanent fixture for future international matches, HPCA president Anurag Thakur, a member of the Lok Sabha, told.
The stadium, 250 km from state capital Shimla, has a 21,600-seating capacity, besides a world-class indoor stadium comprising video analysis facilities for both bowlers and players, a club lounge, restaurant, bar and banquet hall.
He said the popularity of the venue soared after the seven IPL matches in the past three seasons.
We are going provide not only the players but also the spectators with a world-class facility, Thakur, the force behind the Rs.100 crore stadium and ultra-luxurious residential complex, said.
He said the HPCA has been working overtime to get the stadium ready for the match.
For the players, the Pavilion residential complex is almost ready. It has 32 huts made of imported wood and 38 concrete rooms. A world-class multi-gym is the new addition, he added.
The Pavilion, overlooking the stadium, is some three kilometres from the stadium.
However, the HPCA admits the spectators might face problems in getting suitable accommodation.
The town has 56 registered hotels and guest houses with a bed capacity of 1,100. Similarly, McLeodganj, eight kilometres from Dharamsala, has around 91 registered hotels which can accommodate 1,000 people.
We have got some bookings but we are advising spectators to get bookings at nearby destinations also like Palampur and Jwalamukhi, Mohit Sood, HPCA's press secretary, said.
There is no five-star hotel in the vicinity of this small town. Even the airport at Gaggal, near here, has been shut for over five months now.
Thakur said a request has been made to the civil aviation ministry to start special Air India flights during the match as lack of air connectivity might prove a hindrance to the arrival of cricket fans.
According to espncricinfo, the HPCA venue is the first in India to use winter rye grass scattered around the outfield, which prevents the grass from dying when temperatures fall below 10 degrees Celsius.
The stadium figured first on the international cricket map in 2005 when it hosted a warm-up tie between the touring Pakistan team and the Indian Board President's XI.
Since then, the stadium has hosted 24 matches in the Ranji Trophy, apart from hosting two ODIs between India Under 19 vs Australia Under 19 Sep 24 and 25, 2005.

The Australian team seem to be mesmerised by the HPCA stadium in Dharamsala. While a few members of the visiting team have played at the venue before as part of various IPL teams but quite a few of them are new to the experience of playing in a stadium with imposing snow capped hills in the background. Almost all members of the Australian team put up photos of the breathtaking venue for the final Test with captions that show just how astounded they are. The team itself seem to have waited till this moment to take the official team photo.

Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, (Hindi: हिमाचल प्रदेश क्रिकेट एसोसिएशन स्टेडियम) abbreviated as the HPCA Stadium, is a picturesque cricket stadium located in the city of Dharamshala District Kangra in Himachal Pradesh, India. The town of Dharamsala is best known internationally as the home of the Dalai Lama of Tibet.
The stadium has hosted 1 Test, 3 ODIs and 8 T20Is to date.
The stadium served as the home ground for the Himachal Pradesh cricket team for Ranji Trophy matches and other domestic matches. The stadium also hosted some IPL matches as a home stadium for Kings XI Punjab.[2]
The picturesque venue is unique in India as it is situated at an altitude of 1,457 m above the sea level and has the snow-capped Himalayan mountains in the background. Getting to Dharamsala from the nearest airport Is Kangra Airport, which is about 8 kilometres away through the hilly terrain and the harsh winters, during which it rains and snows are some of the deterrents in organizing regular matches.
Dav Whatmore, the former Director of the National Cricket Academy in India had recommended during his tenure that the stadium is suitable for hosting international cricket matches. The first international team who played in this ground was the Pakistani cricket team, when they played a warm-up match against an India A side in 2005.[2]
The first One Day International (ODI) at this stadium was played between India and England on 27 January 2013. England won the match by 7 wickets. The first Test at this stadium was played between India and Australia from 25–29 March 2017
In November 2015, the HPCA stadium was selected as one of the six new Test match venues in India along with the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, JSCA International Stadium Complex, Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Holkar Stadium and Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium.[4]
ACC Centre of Excellence
In December 2015, Asian Cricket Council decided to set up Centre of Excellence at Dharamshala.[5]
2016 ICC World Twenty20
On 21 July 2015, the BCCI announced the names of the eight cities which would be hosting matches during the 2016 ICC World Twenty20. Dharamshala was announced as one of the eight venues for the event.[6] On 11 December 2015, ICC announced the fixtures of the event where the HPCA Stadium was scheduled to host all the first round Group A matches and a single Super 10 Group 2 match.[7] Originally the marquee India vs Pakistan match was scheduled to be hosted by this venue.[8] Due to security concerns for the Pakistani team,[9] the match was moved to Eden Gardens, Kolkata.[10], since the then chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, Virbhadra Singh denied to take responsibility for Players of Pakistan cricket team, siting growing anger amongst Indian people against Pakistan.

The city is divided into two distinct sections. Kotwali Bazaar and the surrounding markets are referred to as Lower Dharamshala or just Dharamshala. Further up the mountain is McLeod Ganj (Upper Dharamshala)

In 1905, tragedy struck Dharamshala when an earthquake (7.8 on richter scale) levelled it completely. After its reconstruction, Dharamshala flourished as a quiet health resort. it became a temporary headquarter of His Holiness The Dalai Lama, Dharamshala has risen to international fame as The Little Lhasa in India. Mcleodganj is 9 km from Dharamshala.
War Memorial (Dharamshala) (12 km from Mcleodganj ) -
The War Memorial is at the very entrance of Dharamsala town. Surrounded by landscaped gardens and little paths, you are led to the Memorial by a storybook pine trail. This place is a memorial for the Himachali Martyrs who fell while defending our motherland during wars with Pakistan and China.
The entry fee is Rs. 10/- per person.

Operated under the auspices of Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association, the Cricket Stadium of Dharamshala situated amidst the Dhauladhar mountain range in Kangra valley often serves as the practice ground for the Indian Cricket Team, Himachal Pradesh state-level cricket team, as well as Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kings XI Punjab. A constant internal battle is what will tear you apart ? shall I look at the mountains or the match? If you are simply visiting the attraction as part of an extended tour, you are in luck! The stadium is open for tourists even when no matches are scheduled, so do make sure to stop by and soak in the beauty.
