Hagios Demetrios in Thessaloniki, Greece, is a five-naves basilica dedicated to the patron saint of Thessaloniki, Saint Demetrius. The basilica is part of the UNESCO world heritage Palaeochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki. It is the largest church in the city and was presumably built on the remains of a Roman bath where Demetrius possibly was killed. In the artfully designed basilica you find a ciborium manufactured from silver, containing the relics of Saint Demetrius.

Thessaloniki has a lot of Byzantine and paleo-Christian churches that have been declared by UNESCO as World Heritage Monuments in 1988.
The church of Agios Dimitrios(Saint Demetrius) is the most famous church in Thessaloniki. Agios Dimitrios became the patron saint of the city in 1912
(324 A.D.) and made Christianity the official religion of the Byzantine Empire, people built a small church on the place of the martyrdom of Agios Dimitrios, close to the Roman baths.
In 413 AD, a bigger three-aisled basilica was founded
in 634 A.D. Shortly afterwards, an even bigger five-isled basilica was built, which remains till today and constitutes the largest church of Greece.
The crypt of the saint, accessed by a staircase behind the sanctuary, is said to be the site where the saint was killed by the Roman soldiers and buried. His crypt was converted into an exhibition area in 1988,
Today, his memory is celebrated every year, along with the deliberation of the city, with a big parade and a glorious Mass.
Underneath the Church of St Demetrios is the place where St Demetrios, Thessaloniki's patron saint, was martyred.
As the level of the ground gradually rose over the centuries, this area acquired the form of a crypt. According both to tradition and to archaeological findings, it was an old bathhouse, in which Demetrios was imprisoned and eventually martyred in ad 303. In the 5th century, when the first Church of St Demetrios was built, the site of his martyrdom was incorporated into the church and the fountain was converted into a source of holy water. In the years that followed, the fountain acquired basins, from which the faithful could collect myron, the sweet-smelling oil produced by the saint's relics. The crypt filled up with earth during the period of Ottoman rule and was not rediscovered until after the fire of 1917. It has been restored by the Archaeological Service and was converted into an exhibition space in 1988.
The first church on the spot was constructed in the early 4th century AD, replacing a Roman bath. . Repeatedly gutted by fires, the church eventually was reconstructed as a five-aisled basilica in 629--634. This was the surviving form of the church much as it is today. The most important shrine in the city, it was probably larger than the local cathedral. The historic location of the latter is now unknown.

Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki (Greek: Άγιος Δημήτριος της Θεσσαλονίκης) was a Christian martyr, who lived in the early 4th century.
During the Middle Ages, he came to be revered as one of the most important Orthodox military saints, often paired with Saint George. His feast day is 26 October for Christians following the Gregorian calendar and 8 November for Christians following the Julian calendar.
Saint Demetrius was born and educated in Thessalonike (Macedonia in Greece), where he exercised the profession of Rhetor or Public Speaker. He made many converts to Christianity. Some say that he became a high Officer of State and even a Proconsul. But this is hardly probable.
Arrested as a Christian and brought before Diocletianus's colleaue, Galerius Maximianus. He appears to have been stabbed to death without the formality attending a legal execution. This was in one of the first years of the 4th century.
His very large church in Thessaloniki, the Hagios Demetrios, dates from the mid-5th century, so he clearly had a large following by then. Thessaloniki remained a centre of his veneration, and he is the patron saint of the city.
After the growth of his veneration as saint, the city of Thessaloniki suffered repeated attacks and sieges from the invading newcomers, Slavs who moved into the Balkans, and Demetrius was credited with many miraculous interventions to defend the city.
Hence later traditions about Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki regard him as a soldier in the Roman army, and he came to be regarded as an important military martyr.
His relics are in great veneration in the East and a magnificent Basilica was soon after his martyrdom erected over his tomb at Thessalonica. On account of the many miracles that have taken place at the shrine St' Demetrius has always been in great honeour in the East and his name is frequently given in Baptism to children.

The holy, glorious and right-victorious Great-martyr (Greek: Μεγαλομάρτυς) Demetrius of Thessaloniki the Myrrh-streamer (Greek Μυροβλήτης) (also Demetrios) is one of the most popular saints in the Orthodox world. He was martyred around the year 306 in Thessalonica, and his cult rapidly grew during the Middle Ages, when he was regarded as the first recognized patron and protector of the city, militarily as well as spiritually. His feast day is celebrated on October 26. The Serbian Orthodox Church commemorates the Saint as a Mitar having a feast of Mitrovan on November 8.

Eine Treppe rechts neben der Apsis, führt zur Krypta hinunter. Angeblich fing man hier wundertätige wohlriechende Ölessenzen (Myrre) auf, die aus dem Grab des Heiligen tropften. Das Marmorbecken soll ein Überrest der römischen Thermen sein, in denen der hl. Dimitrios vor seinem Märtyrertod eingekerkert war und wo er erstochen wurde. Der hl. Dimitrios ist einer der am meisten verehrten Heiligen der Orthodoxen Kirche,
