The scenic spot Hakka Earth Building (TuLou) Folk Cultural Village at Yongding county, Longyan, Fujian province, China. Many of the earth building were built during Ming dynasty, using mud, straw, detritus, and bamboo pieces to build the round building. It can stay many people, even the whole village people, to against the brugands's invasion.

The Chuxi Tulou Cluster, Yongding County, China
The Chuxi Tulou Cluster is another UNESCO World Heritage Site with five large circular buildings, 10 rectangular buildings and a 600-year old history. Very few tourists come to Chuxi because of the hard journey but when the road is finished...they will come...
Unlike many of the other clusters, there are no modern buildings in Chuxi Tulou Cluster, only the old ones, and what made it even more interesting was the fact that we could go into the upper levels.

On the drive back to Yangshuo from somewhere, guide Mark mentioned that Hakka people lived in this area and I asked, Are there any tulou? To which he replied, Yes. Okay, then, let's drive and see what it looks like. Steve and I saw many tulou in Fujian county two years ago (videos uploaded on my channel) that we became tulou'd out but this tulou was different from those because it was built on one level.
A tulou is a traditional communal residence in Fujian province of Southern China constructed in a multi-level, circular design surrounding a central shrine. They were designed for protection, think fortress and are gorgeous.
This one-level tulou was not so gorgeous but still the only one-level tulou we've ever seen.

Yong Ding Hakka Earth Buildings are scattered over the southern part of Longyan area in Fujian Province. A wonderful example of ancient Chinese architecture, the edifices are renowned for their history, unique grandiose style, and delicate layout. Yong Ding Hakka Earth Buildings were even praised by UNESCO as testament to mythological mountain village architecture unmatched in the world.

In July 2008, Quebec City, Canada held the 32nd World Heritage Conference, after fierce competition among 47 other candidates from 41 countries, the sign of Chinese Hakkas Culture Fujian Tulou architecture have been inscribed in by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. This means Fujian Tulou has been approved as the world level and had become a culture site with significant meaning and general value. The world unique, legendary hill architecture mode; falling down like a black UFO, rising up like the mushroom; a miracle of Chinese ancient architecture; and mysterious eastern castle, these are all the visuals naming for this kind of Fujian Tulou. From this naming, Tulou is one of the most characteristic kinds of Chinese local architecture. It has a distinctive history position that reflects thousands years of visitors' and locals' wisdom and persistence to protect and improve the environment and preserve and promote the culture under the modern society.

The Hakka clan still lived in the Yongding county in Fujian, where centuries old tulou were built to protect them from bandits and wild animals. Tulou are round/rectangular structures made of rammed earth and glutinous rice, reinforced by bamboo and wood chips.
In search of our roots, we traveled to the hilly interior of Fujian in Dec 2011 to witness the most astonishing Hakka tulou (roundhouses) that still exist in the 21st century China. There were thousands of tulou but we visited the few popular clusters in the area, namely Chuxi and Hongkeng tulou clusters.
A must place to visit if you are Hakka!

Fujian Tulou, China (2017)
Tulou means mud house. A Tulou is a multi-story commun structure who protects inhabitants from bandits and wild animals. They inhabit entire clans. They are buildings of communal living, with communal kitchens, bathrooms in the middle and lower floor and individual sleeping rooms in the upper floor.
Forty six Tulou were given World Heritage status by Unesco in 2008. We visited some of them like the Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster and capture it in a short video.

You can drive from gorgeous Taxia Village over to the Hongkeng Tulou Cluster without any problems. The Hongkeng cluster contains Zhengchanglou, Jingyanglou, Kaijulou and Fuyulou, all completely different styles of tulous that should be seen even through we were definately becoming toulou'd out...
Jingyanglou is a very friendly and quiet private tulou that didn't have many families still living inside along with even fewer tourists. Originally called the Lins' residence, Jingyanglou was constructed between 1821-1852 and is a square tulou. Four stories high, 12 bays wide and 10 bays deep.

Fujian Tulou (literally meaning “mud buildings”) is a property of 46 buildings constructed between the 15th and 20th centuries over 120 km in Nanjing County, south-west of Fujian province.
They were built for defence purposes and are inscribed as exceptional examples of a building tradition and function exemplifying a particular type of communal living and defensive organization.
Housing a whole clan, the houses functioned as village units and were known as “a little kingdom for the family” or “bustling small city.”
They feature tall fortified mud walls capped by tiled roofs with wide over-hanging eaves.
Yuchang is a round building and looks like other round houses from outside. It sits quietly on the mountain and by the river. Though the seemingly collapsing wooden frames look unsafe and even dangerous, the four-story house has been in use for over 700 years.
The ancestral hall, a site of ancestor worship in Chinese culture, was placed at the center of the round house representing the critical importance of the ancestral hall. Ancestral halls are believed to be closely linked to Confucian culture.
The heritage town of Yunshui (literally cloud and water) is a historical site with featured scenery spots such as enduring ancient paths, centuries old banyan trees and the famous earthen building.
One of the oldest banyan trees in the town covers an area of 1933 square meters (20806 square feet), it is also by far the largest banyan tree found in Fujian Province.
The two-story stores next to the ancient path are all brick-and-wood houses which have been in use for hundreds of years witnessing the town’s up and down as time goes by.
Hegui Building (Chinese: 和贵楼), a square earthen building served as the residence of the Jian Family, was built in the 10th year of Yongzheng Era of the Qing Dynasty (1732 AD). It was once the highest building in Nanjing County in history.
It is built on a swamp covering more than 3,000 square meters and is known as the “Onshore Noah's Ark.
Huaiyuan Building (Chinese:怀远楼), or Huaiyuan Earthen Building, built in 1905 in late Qing Dynasty, is located in Kanxia Village, Meili Town, 54 kilometers from Nanjing County.
Covering an area of 1384 square meters, Huaiyuan Building is 4-storey round earthen building in the height of 14.5 meters with 136 rooms. It is the best preserved earthen building with the most exquisite construction technology in Nanjing County.

Hakka shifan 十番 music from Yongding, Fujian, China
A performance of Guo Jiang Long 《过江龙》 (River-Crossing Dragon), a piece from the tradition of shifan (十番) instrumental ensemble music--called da shifan (打十番) in the local vernacular--of the Hakka (客家) people of southwestern Fujian province, southeast China. This repertoire is also referred to as Hanyue (汉乐).
The ensemble in this video (whose name is unfortunately unknown) is performing under an ancient banyan tree (古榕树) in a tulou (土楼) community in Yongding District (永定区), Longyan (龙岩市), southwestern Fujian province, southeast China. Yongding District was known as Yongding County (永定县) until 2015. Its population of approximately 400,000 is over 99% Hakka.
The instruments used in this performance include:

● Erhu (二胡, vertical fiddle)
● Other huqins (胡琴, vertical fiddles)
● Dizi (笛子, transverse bamboo flute)

The term shifan (十番, meaning many kinds, literally ten kinds) refers to a large ensemble comprising many kinds of instruments, usually including diverse types of wind, string, and percussion instruments. Such ensembles were especially popular for ceremonial and festive music in many parts of China, especially during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), and many shifan traditions continue to the present.
