Hakodate Won Us Over Pt 2 | Japan 2016 | Episode 9.2
My morning exploring Midori-no-Shima (seen in the previous video) started to warm me up to Hakodate, but it wasn’t until our afternoon exploring the Motomachi area (seen in this video) that we both started to fall in love with this city.
Being the first port opened to foreign trade in 1854, Hakodate attracted many foreign traders and Motomachi was their preferred area to settle. This left it’s beautiful mark on Hakodate with an interesting melding of Western, Russian and Japanese architectural styles.
While exploring Motomachi we found the Russian Orthodox Church, Catholic Hakodate Motomachi Church, Motomachi Park, the old Town Hall and let’s not forget the second best melon bread ice cream in the world. We were lucky to be descending into Motomachi Park just as the sun was setting giving us a spectacular view over Hakodate port.
We finished out our day shopping in the red brick warehouses, followed up with a meal of soup curry and Genghis Khan (barbecued mutton).
Hakodate is an amazing city, and as it revealed it’s beauty succeeded in winning us over.

The harbor of Hakodate became one of the first opened places for foreign trade in 1854 after Japan's era of isolation had come to an end. As a result, many traders from China and Russia and Western countries moved to Hakodate. Motomachi is located at the foot of Mount Hakodate, turned into a district favored among the new foreign residents.
Many foreign-looking buildings remain in the area today. The Russian Orthodox Church, the Old British Consulate, the Chinese Memorial Hall, the prefectural government's former branch office building and the old Hakodate Public Hall are among the most famous in the district.

Onuma Quasi National Park is located only twenty kilometers north of Hakodate, Onuma Park (Onuma Koen) is known for its picturesque, island dotted lakes and majestic dormant volcano, Mount Komagatake(駒ヶ岳).
Onuma Park can be easily visited in either a day trip from Hakodate or on a stopover on a journey between Hakodate and Sapporo.
The park's most attractive area is positioned between the two lakes Onuma (large lake) and Konuma (small lake) and can be explored wholly on foot. Pleasant walking courses let you explore the lakes' peninsulas and islands, several of them are connected with each other by small bridges, in easy 15-60 minute walks.
It is also possible to rent bicycles (500 yen/per hour, 1000 yen/day). A cycling course leads around Lake Onuma (about 14 km), but follows the main road rather than the lakeshore for most of the distance. Yet, It is a nice way to explore the area.
During the warmer seasons there is also sightseeing boat tours offered every 40 minutes. It lastins about 30 minutes (1100 yen per person). Other activities to be enjoyed in Onuma Park include tennis, golf, canoeing, fishing and camping.

From Hakodate Station, board the JR train for Onuma Koen Station.
By limited express train, the one- way journey will take about 20 minutes with a cost of 1160 yen.
By local train, the one-way journey takes about one hour with a cost of 540 yen.

This is hand organ which was made to commemorate the first anniversary of the (grand) opening of the Goryokaku Tower. It took 8 months to make it by Motoki Tanime, He's very few workman of hand organ in Japan, who has a atelier at the foot of Mt.Hakodate.

Their most famous ramen is called Genghis Khan miso ramen with a spicier version karamiso broth. It is located near Susukino station of the Nambuko line (Sapporo City, Hokkaido). 1995年（平成7年）3月16日に北海道旅客鉄道（JR北海道）函館本線の駅として、銭函駅 - 星置駅間に開業。
1999年（平成11年）3月11日に自動券売機・簡易自動改札機設置。
2000年（平成12年）3月31日に南口を開設。
2017年（平成29年）度の1日平均乗車人員は1,073人。
手稲駅管理の無人駅。ホームは相対式2面2線（ホーム長：135m・140m）。改札口は南北2か所にある。簡易自動券売機、簡易自動改札機（Kitaca・磁気券ともに対応）設置。不正乗車防止のため、不定期に「特別改札」が実施される。
札幌市最西端に位置し、住宅地の広域化に伴い新設された請願駅。
駅名の由来は駅近くの星置川に架かる「星観（ほしみ）橋」から。
JR北海道の駅では唯一ひらがなのみで表記された駅名である。
