Best way to spend a day in Hakone | Hakone free pass - Round Course
Hakone (箱根) is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, less than one hundred kilometers from Tokyo.
Famous for hot springs, natural beauty and the view across Lake Ashinoko of nearby Mount Fuji, Hakone is one of the most popular destinations among Japanese and international tourists looking for a break from Tokyo.
The Hakone Free Pass by Odakyu Railways is a discount pass for exploring Hakone. It provides unlimited use of Odakyu-affiliated buses, trains, boats, cablecars and ropeways in the Hakone area and discounted admission to selected tourist attractions on two or three consecutive days. Optionally, the pass also includes a discounted round trip from Tokyo's Shinjuku Station.
popular and attractive way of visiting Hakone is by circling the region with five different means of transport (train, cablecar, ropeway, boat and bus), using the Hakone Free Pass.
The round course outlined below starts and ends in Hakone-Yumoto and circles the Hakone region in the counter-clockwise direction. Of course, it is also possible to follow the course in the opposite direction or to start and end somewhere different.
If you leave early in the morning, it is possible to completed the Hakone round course in a one day trip from Tokyo. However, we recommend allocating two days and one night to your visit, preferably with a stay at a ryokan with hot spring baths.

Japan - Day Trip to HAKONE (1080p HD) | Magda T
DAY TRIP TO HAKONE:
Hakone is well known for being an Onsen (hot spring) haven in Japan. It’s a short train journey away from Tokyo so it makes a perfect destination for a day trip. When visiting an onsen, you need to follow a specific etiquette – in majority of them, no clothes or tattoos are allowed! If you don’t feel comfortable being naked, Hakone Kowakien Yunessun is a ‘swimsuit wearing’ onsen and some of them permit band-aids over tattoos.
As we only had one day, we skipped the onsen experience but there is always another time!
GETTING THERE FROM TOKYO:
• Using HAKONE FREE PASS (2 days pass for Y5.140) can be purchased from ticket vending machines at all Odakyu line stations and also at Shinjuku station West Exit 1F at Odakyu Sightseeing Service centre.
• Take Odakyu Railway to Odawara and change there to Hakone Tozan Train – price of the return ticket is included into the Hakone Free Pass which also covers all the transport in the Hakone area and discounted prices on entry fees to majority of the attractions & restaurants
• From Shinjuku station to Hakone-Yumoto on the ODAKYU ROMANCE CAR (express train 75 mins) with reserved seats but need to buy a supplementary ticket for Y1.090 to addition to regular train tickets - can be purchased at the same places as the pass & also online

Hakone (箱根町/Hakone-machi) is a town in Ashigarashimo District in Kanagawa Prefecture. Hakone has been designated as a Geopark by UNESCO. Most of the town is within the borders of the volcanically active Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park (富士箱根伊豆国立公園), centered on Lake Ashi (芦ノ湖/Ashi-no-ko).
The Hakone Tozan Railway (箱根登山鉄道/Hakone Tozan Tetsudō) is a private railway company in Japan, part of the Odakyu Group. It is best known for its operation of the Hakone Tozan Line, the first mountain railway in Japan, but like most Japanese railway companies, also operates bus service, namely Hakone Tozan Bus. It also operates the connecting Hakone Tozan Cable Car.
The Hakone Tozan Line consists of two sections: a lower section from Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto, and an upper section from Hakone-Yumoto to Gōra. At Gōra, a cable car is available to transfer visitors to and from Lake Ashi.

Mountain train in Hakone japan. I vlog my second day in beautiful Hakone just two hours outside of Tokyo. It was a really nice day and the Hakone Mountain train was a cool experience on my travels in Japan.
If you are planning to go on a escape from Tokyo i highly suggest you buy a Hakone freepass at the Odakyu desk in downtown tokyo at the Shinjuku station. The pass gives you axxess to all trains, buses and ferries in the hakone area.

DYA717 July 12, 2018 Hakone Thu
DYA717 July 12, 2018 (Thu) Hakone -- Breakfast at 7 a.m. at the Toyoko Inn Atami. Today starts my Hakone adventure. I caught the local train; interesting it had double-decked green cars. Above you there is a red light and a card reader. You swipe your debit card or whatever and the red light turns green to indicate you paid for your upgraded first class seat. I had my JR railpass so I just waited for the conductor to come and turn on the green light. The bullet train would have taken 8 minutes but this local train took around 25 minutes with several stops. I got off at Odawara station. Went to the Odakyu train information center and picked up brochures and advice and things to do. Paid 4000-yen for a 2-day pass. This pass covers almost everything from trains, buses, cablecar/ropeway, and some attractions.
Jumped on the Hakone tozan train to Hakone-Yumoto. Went downstairs and caught the H-line Hakone Tozan bus to Motohakone-Ko about a 40 min. ride. It was pretty easy to find the correct bus because they had agents directing us tourists to the various bus lines. Nice right up/down the mountain side passing many onsens along the way. Motohakone-Ko is on the shore of Lake Ashi (Ashiko), a nice tourist stop. Hakone Shrine is here. That’s the one with the big torii gate in the water of Ashiko. I saw the Shrine on a previous trip so passed it up this time. Walked to Ancient Cedar Avenue -- 10 min. Cedar Avenue walk is ~15 min. Cedars were planted to protect travelers from the weather on the ancient Tokaido Road. The road connected Kyoto with Edo – about 319 miles. Only 2 km of the cedar avenue remain today. I stayed on the main paved road so I may have missed most of the ancient preserved old road which I think was a nice adjacent pathway. Visited Hakone Checkpoint – Hakone Sekisho -- 5 min. walk from Motohakone-Ko. This is a reproduction of one of 53 checkpoints which were on the Tokaido Road. They especially checked for women illegally trying to get out of Edo and also checked for contraband stuffs.
Went BURA-BURA 5 min. more to Hakonemachi-Ko another tourist spot next to Motohakone-Ko.
Boarded the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise bound for Togendai -- 40 min. It made a short trek to Motohakone-Ko to pick up more passengers. Togendai is a tourist spot on the northern shores of Lake Ashi. Boarded the Hakone Ropeway. Get off at Owakudani station OH-63 – 20 min. The Hakone Ropeway is the longest in Japan at 1.6 miles. Owakudani is the Little Hell or Little Jigoku, a Japanese term for the volcanic area of bubbling mud, sulfurous steam, etc.
Continued onto the next leg of the Hakone Ropeway and get off at Souzan – 10 min. another tourist stop. Boarded the Hakone Tozan Cable Car for a 10 min. ride to Gora which is another tourist stop. Boarded the Hakone Tozan Train for a 40 min. ride to Hakone-Yumoto and then caught the shinkansen back to Atami. It was kinda early so I walked around Atami town for a bit, stopped at Jonathans on the seashore for a little snack of French fries and wine.
