THE PATH OF WILDNESS
The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast's track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination
The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.

Japan Travel: Togakushi Shrine feel spritual energy, Nagano31 Moopon
Japan Travel: Togakushi Shrine feel spritual energy, Nagano31 Moopon
Togakushi Shrine ( Togakushi Jinja) consists of a lower, a middle and an upper shrine in the woody mountains northwest of Nagano's city center. The shrines are related to an important story in Japanese mythology in which the Sun Goddess hid herself in a cave in present day Takachiho in Kyushu after her brother had misbehaved, as a result, bringing darkness to the world.
In order to get the sunlight back, the other deities tried to coax the Sun Goddess out of the cave by performing spectacular dance performances in front of it. As the Sun Goddess took a peek out, one of the deities grabbed the cave's stone door and threw it away not to allow her to hide again. The stone door flew all the way to Togakushi in Nagano Prefecture, which is also how the area got its name: Togakushi literally means hiding door.
Today, the upper shrine worships the deity who grabbed and threw away the stone door, while the middle shrine enshrines the deity who performed the dance in front of the cave. The shrines of Togakushi are connected both by roads and hiking trails up the mountain's forested slopes. Visitors would first arrive at the torii gate of the lower shrine, from which is a long flight of stairs leading up to its praying hall. A two kilometer ascent from here takes you to the middle shrine, which stands at the top of a small town of shops and restaurants. The shrine features a praying hall with nice architecture, a small waterfall, and sacred trees which are over 800 years old.
The entrance to the upper shrine is another two kilometers uphill from the middle shrine. From the parking lot and bus stop starts the two kilometer long approach to the shrine, which is lined by over 300 tall cryptomeria trees, passes the thatched-roof Zuishinmon Gate along the way, and ends with a series of stone steps. The shrine's main hall spectacularly stands in the steep mountainside of Mount Togakushi with the mountain peaks towering above.
An alternative trail to the upper shrine leads via Kagamiike (Mirror Pond), a serene pond which reflects the surrounding mountain landscape nicely. Note also that the Togakure Ninpo Museum is situated right next to the entrance to the upper shrine, while the Kids Ninja Village is close in the vicinity of the middle shrine, making interesting additions to the shrine visits.
Access info.

World Heritage: Shirakawa Village
Historic villages of Shirakawa Villages
Located deep in the mountains of northern Gifu and Toyama prefectures, the Shirakawa-go and Gokayama districts were cut off from the rest of Japanese society because of their extremely isolated location in remote mountain valleys, and as such developed a very unique culture and lifestyle different from any other area of Japan.
The farmhouses were built 200 to 300 years ago to suit the environment in Shirakawa. The steep angle of the roof prevents excessive build-up of snow in the winter, while the direction of the structures aid in keeping the rooms cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The village, which was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1995, is still an active community and many of the farmhouses operates as Minshiku or inns accepting guests.
The houses in the villages in the valley are unique to Japan. They are very big, and have thick thatched roofs that come down steeply. This way the snow can slide off the roofs. There is also enough space under the roofs to store supplies for long winters. The inhabitants of these villages used to earn their money in the silk-industry. They lived a very secluded life.
The Shirakawago area has more than 100 gassho-style houses with about 600 people in 150 households living in the area. There are many souvenir shops in the area, and it has become a significant tourist spot. There are many museums to visit and many facilities to experience traditional industrial arts like dying and weaving amidst the scene of rich seasonal coloring. Shirakawago is similar to Hida No Sato in that there are a collection of authentic traditional buildings, but the difference is that they're all lived in and the whole place is a combination of working village and tourist attraction.

Top 6 Ski Resorts in the World [ GENUINE RANKING]
6. La Vallee Blanche: Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France
The Olympic Games were hosted here in 1924 and it has been a prized ski resort ever since. It ranks among the best in the world and is located at the foot of one of the highest peaks that the Alps have to offer. It’s the second highest elevation in Europe at a staggering 16,000 feet. It can definitely hold the bragging rights to holding one of the largest vertical drops of nearly 10,000 feet and has the longest runs in the world of nearly 14 miles. All in all, this is a really unique ski resort with many record setting runs.
5. Banff Aspen Lodge: Alberta, Canada
Located in the Banff National Park, this ski resort is probably one of the more scenic options on the list. It is located in North America and there are several other ski resorts that surround it. Each one is roughly 31 miles apart but it can be agreed upon that each one boasts unique features and fun for all levels of experience.
4. Lion Square Lodge: Vail, Colorado
Vail, Colorado is a legendary ski spot and is definitely deserving of this spot on the list. It happens to have the largest ski resort area in all of the United States. It covers roughly 5,000 aces of terrain that you can ski on and let’s not forget that you have the option of taking a high speed quad up and down the mountain. Aside from the skiing, you can enjoy several art galleries, museums, and even partake in hockey and ice skating.
3. Zermatt, Switzerland
While it neighbors Gstaad, Zermatt holds some of the best ski resorts in the world. It can be a remarkably peaceful getaway that you can take, mainly because there are few cars in the area. If you love huge snow falls with huge vertical drops then you will love it here. There are slopes for both beginners and advanced skiers and there is also a lot to do outside of the resort including dining at fine restaurants and shopping in unique shops.
2. Best Western Premier, Kaiserhof: Kitzbuhel, Austria
This is considered one of Europe’s “Liveliest Ski Resorts” by many. To begin, it sits in a beautiful city that hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1964 and 1976. It is probably one of the more prominent holiday resorts in the area and the village itself is said to be more than 700 years old. People have been skiing here since 1892 so it goes to show how much of an impact this ski resort has made on the world. Whether you’re a newbie or a veteran, you’ll find the slopes here challenging as well as fun.
1. Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia
It is fun how half a billion dollars and a third of a century can transform a regular mountain slope into one of the best ski resorts in the world. Whistler’s village has everything that a skier or snowboarder would ever need: international stores, cafes, and over 100 restaurants. They cater to a majority of languages including Italian, French, Greek, and Chinese. The food happens to be one of the more popular features about this ski resort. While the dispute over the best ski resort in the world has been around forever, this one consistently receives the “World’s Greatest Ski Resort” year after year and if you were to visit here, you would quickly see why.

Japan Travel: Tsumago town of Edo period & Japanese food, Nagano, Japan
Japan Travel: Tsumago town of Edo period & Japanese food, Nagano, Japan

Tsumago was a post town on the Nakasendo route between Kyoto and Edo. It is known today as one of the best preserved post towns in Japan. The town and its residents go to great lengths to recreate the environment and atmosphere of the Edo Period. Cars are not allowed on the main street in the day and phone lines and power cables are kept concealed, so that visitors can imagine they have slipped back to an earlier time.
Tsumago also recreates the post town ambience by maintaining its Honjin and Wakihonjin. In all post towns, the Honjin was the principal inn and served government officials who were traveling through. When more accommodations were required, the Wakihonjin served to accommodate the travelers of lower status. Tsumago also maintains the office where laborers and horses were rented to aid in travel. Many minshuku and ryokan are located in the town, and a stay at one of them will greatly add to the illusion of having left the modern era. If time permits, it is highly recommended to hike a preserved trail of the former Nakasendo from Tsumago to Magome. It is well maintained and well marked in both Japanese and English.
