Abandoned St. Louis : James Clemens Mansion (Encountered People)
In the 1830s, James Clemens Jr. was a highly successful merchant living in St. Louis; he was also the uncle of famed author Samuel Clemens, better known by his pen name, Mark Twain. James married the shy, gentle Eliza Mullanphy in 1833, and together they had twelve children in twenty years. In 1849, a great cholera epidemic swept through St. Louis by steamboats, carrying the disease from India to the ports of the United States, and up through the Mississippi River. One-eighth of the city's population was decimated in only six months, including a two-year old of the Clemens' family. Eliza died a few years later in 1853, leaving James with seven remaining children, distraught and alone. Instead of re-marrying, he appropriated a small fortune to construct a new house where he would be able to see his wife every day until his last.
This new memorial-residence was designed by Patrick Walsh in 1858. Walsh and Porter White, a plaster artist, were instructed by the grieving Mr. Clemens to reproduce Eliza's image in the ornamental plaster ceiling molding on the first floor, in a Carrara marble mantle in the parlor, and in other design elements. St. Louis' Great Fire of 1849 convinced Clemens that the home needed to be fireproof, so the Greek Revival Palladian Villa was adorned with many cast iron features; Eliza's death mask was carefully re-created in cast iron and used in the exterior ornamentation.
James Clemens Jr. resided at the somewhat morbid home until his death in 1879. In 1885 the building was sold to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, who added a dormitory to the rear of the residence in 1887, and most notably, a graceful chapel in 1896. The chapel was designed by Aloysius Gillick, who was also the architect of several other local Archdiocese buildings, including St. Mary's Infirmary. The two-story brick building features an ornate front porch, red sandstone ornaments and sills.
The sisters left the building in 1949 and were followed by the Vincentian Fathers and Brothers for some time. The buildings became a City Landmark in 1971. In 1979, a series of different social service groups passed ownership throughout the years, who unfortunately did not maintain the building. By the year 2000, the Berean Society was using the old building as a homeless shelter, and by this time many renovations were badly needed. In 2001, a Buddhist organization bought the property to use as a retreat center, but could not raise enough funds to restore the buildings. Major structural damage had begun to take hold, and the city condemned the buildings.
In 2009 it was purchased by a developer, and although the property has had some stabilization work performed, redevelopment has since been halted.

Divisoria is a commercial center in Tondo, Manila, Philippines known for its shops that sell low-priced goods and its diverse manufacturing activities. The Tutuban Shopping Centers are situated within the commercial hub along with a night market located in the Shopping Centers' vicinity. The area is riddled with different bazaars, malls, and a few points of interest.
Divisoria is located in the second district of Manila City, which is Tondo. With no defined borders, Divisoria spans an area of about 0.5 square kilometers (0.19 sq mi) and is bisected by Recto Avenue. It has gained a reputation for its poorly sanitized streets and poor-quality products but with the establishment of the Tutuban Centermall in 1993, the area saw the rise of other shopping malls that attracted by those from the higher classes.[4]
Divisoria is known for its dimly lit streets and fly-by-night vendors.[5] In response to commercial traffic and crime occurrences, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada installed 137 new lamp posts along Benavidez and Asuncion Streets in the area.
The market's reputation for poor sanitation has brought attention for further research, particularly the currencies circulating around it as well as its vegetables. Sampled in a study, parasitic contamination of coins and paper bills obtained from selected public markets in Metro Manila has been reported. Furthermore, vegetable samples were obtained from Divisoria and other markets from Quezon City and Muntinlupa City. The prevalence of parasitic infestation of the samples was 45%. According to the study, other public markets obtained their vegetables from Divisoria. Both studied recommended extra caution to safeguard oneself from possible causes of infections.
Divisoria is a term of Spanish origin, which translates as divide or division. A variation of the term is linea divisoria, which translates as dividing line. While the term can be used in the general sense of division, it can also be used with a geographical connotation.
This region was referred to as Divisoria due to its historical function dating back to the Spanish Colonial Period. That is, Divisoria divided Intramuros, the gated city, from Parian, where the Chinese were racially segregated. It was only after this segregation that retail industry of Chinese merchants flourished, which is more approximate to the vision of Divisoria which now persists.

1883 - tornadoes was one measuring F4 on the Fujita scale, which visited Louisville, Kentucky. The tornado carved a path from the Parkland neighborhood all the way to Crescent Hill, destroying 766 buildings ($2½ million worth of property) and killing an estimated 76 to 120 people. At least 55 of those deaths occurred when the Falls City Hall collapsed. This is one of the highest death tolls due to a single building collapse from a tornado in U.S. history. In addition, it was one of the 25 most deadly tornadoes in U.S. history until May 22, 2011. It was relegated to 26th when the May 22, 2011, tornado in Joplin, Missouri, killed 158.
1875 The First Kentucky Derby The 1875 Kentucky Derby was the 1st running of the Kentucky Derby. The race took place on May 17, 1875.[1] The first Kentucky Derby was a 1.5 mile race, and the traditional distance of 1.25 miles was not established until the 1896 Derby.[2] Thirteen of the fifteen jockeys in the race, including winner Oliver Lewis, were African-American. Won by an African-American jockey Oliver Lewis (1856--1924) was an African-American jockey in Thoroughbred horse racing. In 1875, Lewis rode in the very first Kentucky Derby on the winning horse, Aristides. Lewis and Aristides took second place in the Belmont Stakes, which is now the third race of the Triple Crown
1917 Camp Taylor is a neighborhood and former military base six miles southeast of downtown Louisville, Kentucky, USA. First announced on June 11 it was originally a military camp named for former president Zachary Taylor. For a time it was America's largest military training camp, housing 47,500 men at one time, and spurred development in an area that was previously dominated by farmland.

Disenfranchised African American residents of Little Africa it included several hundred homes as well as businesses and schools. In the 1870s, Joseph S. Cotter, Sr. became the first African American resident in the Homestead settlement.
1927 Jim Brown President of The First National Bank Of Louisville. •October 28, 1929 (Black Monday): The rally ends. Panic selling resumes. The Dow drops almost 40 points (nearly 13 percent) to close 260.64.
October 29, 1929 (Black Tuesday): The Dow drops another 30 points
(nearly 12 percent) to close at 230.07 on trading of 16 million shares. July 8, 1932: The Dow closes at 41.22, an 89 percent drop from its pre-crash high.
1937, intense rains drenched Louisville and continued falling for days. The Ohio River rose to levels never recorded before or since.The result was the Great Flood of 1937For residents of the Louisville area, it was a massive life-changing experience for 27 days. 200 Louisville residents died in the flood, according to the Encyclopedia of Louisville.
In Louisville, the river crested about 30 feet above flood stage Jan. 27, and about 175,000 people were evacuated. While The Westend hit the hardest the Ohio rose up 50ft.a long
Broadway.
Western Louisville, Portland, downtown and an area near Butchertown called The Point (which was cleared out after the flood) were the hardest hit, but flooding extended to low-lying areas across the region — including most of Dixie Highway
