Hallgrímskirkja is the main landmark of Reykjavík and the highest church in Iceland, at 74 metres (244 ft).
It is named eftir the 17th century clergyman and poet Hallgrímur Pétursson. State architect Guðjón Samúelsson designed it in the semblance of Iceland's volcanic and glacial landscape, the hexagonal columns echoing the trap rocks found throughout the country.
It took 41 years to build the church, from 1945 to 1986, though the steeple and wings were completed in 1974, on the 1100th anniversary of the Icelandic settlement, as recorded in the annals of the first settlers.
The church is also an observation tower, offering a breathtaking view of Reykjavík as well as the mountains and coastline surrounding Earth's northernmost capital.

Hallgrímskirkja is the largest church in Iceland and and its 73m tower provides a wonderful 360° view over all Reykjavík. Although building work started in 1945, and in 1948, the whole church was finally consecrated on 26 October 1986.
The statue of explorer Leif Erikson by Alexander Stirling Calder in front of the church predates its construction. It was a gift from the United States in honor of the 1930 Althing Millennial Festival, commemorating the 1000th anniversary of Iceland's parliament at Þingvellir in 930 AD.
The church houses a large pipe organ by the German organ builder Johannes Klais of Bonn. The statue of Christ is by Einer Jónsson. The stained glass are the work of Leifur Breiðfjörð. Paintings of Archangels Gabriel and Michael are by Kristín Gunnlaugsdóttir.

At 73 metres (244 ft), it is the largest church in Iceland and the sixth tallest architectural structure in Iceland after Longwave radio mast Hellissandur, the radio masts of the US Navy at Grindavík, Eiðar longwave transmitter and Smáratorg tower. The church is named after the Icelandic poet and clergyman Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614 to 1674), author of the Passion Hymns.

It took 41 years to build the church. Construction work began in 1945 and ended in 1986, the landmark tower being completed long before the church's actual completion. The crypt beneath the choir was consecrated in 1948, the steeple and wings were completed in 1974, and the nave was consecrated in 1986. Situated in the centre of Reykjavík, it is one of the city's best-known landmarks and is visible throughout the city. It is 1,676 square metres. It is similar in style to the expressionist architecture of Grundtvig's Church of Copenhagen, Denmark, completed in 1940.
The church houses a large pipe organ by the German organ builder Johannes Klais of Bonn. It has electronic action, the Pipes being remote from the four manuals and pedal console. There are 102 ranks, 72 stops and 5275 pipes. It is 15 metres tall and weighs 25 tons. Its construction was finished in December 1992. It has been recorded by Christopher Herrick in his Organ Fireworks VII CD and by Mattias Wager on his CD Live at Vatnajökull.
The church is also used as an observation tower. An observer can take a lift up to the viewing deck and view Reykjavík and the surrounding mountains. ICELAND TRAVEL VLOG - Hallgrimskirkja Cathedral is one of the best things to do in Reykjavik, Iceland. We spent a while walking around the massive church, exploring it and eventually going right up to the top on the 8th floor, to see the view. The hallgrímskirkja church organ started playing and we filmed it!
I spent 5 days in Iceland in 2018 and it was BEAUTIFUL. I loved exploring the mountains, waterfalls and volcanos. I would say this is Iceland on a BUDGET if anything, as I didn’t want to eat out for most meals. If you’re looking for a YouTuber in Iceland, you’ve found him! This video is a combination of a street waking video and pure cinematic B roll footage.
