The Gol stave church is dendrochronologically dated to 1212. When the city built a new church around 1880, it was decided to demolish the old stave church. It was saved from destruction by the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments, which bought the materials in order to re-erect the church elsewhere. It was acquired by King Oscar II, who financed its relocation and restoration as the central building of his private open-air museum near Oslo. The restoration, overseen by architect Waldemar Hansteen, was completed in 1885. In 1907 this early open-air museum, the world's first, was merged with the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, which now manages the stave church. The church, however, is still nominally the property of the reigning monarch.
In 1994, a modern replica has been erected in Gol as a tourist attraction in a theme park in downtown Gol. This replica is located some distance from the original site of the Mediaeval church. There is also a replica in the Scandinavian Heritage Park in Minot, North Dakota, USA.

Passing through Gol, Hallingdal, Norway
A brief video, and a pretty boring one, of a car ride through Gol in Hallingdal in Norway. I'm uploading it because it shows - towards the end - the copy of the famous stave church in this district. The original is at the Folk Museum in Oslo - I've posted a video of that previously. It came from this district, but was given to King Oscar II as a gift, pulled apart and put back up in Oslo in what later became the Museum. A copy was built at put up here at Gol ... although not on the original location. As you see it's in rather a strange spot, not very idyllic ... ! :-D
I also posted the video to show the difference between the highlands and the relative lowlands in this country. This was filmed the same weekend as the previous video I posted - the first weekend of May 2011 - but as you see, down in Gol the trees had gotten so much further in their greening. Fascinating. :-)

Riding from Nesbyen to Gol on the Bergen Line Riding fra Nesbyen til Gol på Bergen Line
We are on the Bergen Railway between Oslo and Bergen, where we see the line from Nesbyen to Gol. The line runs over 300 miles between the two cities, and is the highest mainline railway in Northern Europe. Today, our train is being pulled by EL 18 18-2258, and there are 9 cars in the consist. The first car is NSB Komfort, which is 1st class. The second car is NSB Familie, which is for families with small children. Then the rest of the train is comprised of 2nd class and a cafe car. When we get into Gol, we pass the train from Bergen to Oslo. This train is being pulled by EL 18 18-2246 and also consists of nine cars. Enjoy the view from the train. Hallingdal Museum Nesbyen ble grunnlagt i 1899 og er blant de eldste friluftsmuseene i Norge. Museet er en del av Buskerudmuseet.
På museumsområdet ved de maleriske fossene i Rukkedøla finnes det 30 antikvariske bygninger og ca. 30 000 gjenstander fra hele regionen. «Staveloftet» fra Ål ble bygd rundt 1340 og er i dag et av landets best bevarte ikke-kirkelige trehus fra middelalderen.

Oslo, Norway - Kon-Tiki Museum HD (2013)
The Kon-Tiki Museum is a museum in the Bygdøy peninsula in Oslo, Norway. It houses vessels and maps from the Kon-Tiki expedition, as well as a library with about 8000 books. It was opened in a provisional building in 1949. In 1957, the current building—designed by architects F. S. Platou and Otto Torgersen—was opened. In 1978, an extension of the museum designed by Torgersen was opened.
The Kon-Tiki Museum is situated near several other museums, including the Fram Museum; the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History; the Viking Ship Museum; and the Norwegian Maritime Museum.
