During the summer months, it gets extremely busy so it is wise to arrive early, although there still might be a wait. For example, we arrived at the gate at 9:30 am and, even though the park opens at 9 am, we had to wait until 10:30 to park in the Hamilton Pool parking lot.
Don't ignore the second attraction at this Preserve, go check out the access to the Pedernales River that is almost a mile from the parking lot. It's worth the small hike and if you came to get away from people, this is the perfect spot to sit in the sand or water.

Hamilton Pool Preserve Tour Austin Dripping Springs Texas
We visited the beautiful Hamilton Pool Preserve in Dripping Springs Texas which was about 25 miles west of Austin. This video shows you what it was like to hike there from the parking area. The waterfalls were tranquil, and the pool and the overhanging rock formation were beautiful relics of ancient times. There were even catfish in the pool! It was October of 2015 but they still did not allow people to swim or wade into the water due to high bacteria count.

Hamilton Pool Preserve Austin Texas Waterfalls Hyperlapse
Hamilton Pool Preserve is a natural pool that was created when the dome of an underground river collapsed due to massive erosion thousands of years ago. The pool is located about 23 miles (37 km) west of Austin, Texas off Highway 71. Since the 1960s, Hamilton Pool has been a popular summer swimming spot for Austin visitors and residents. Hamilton Pool Preserve consists of 232 acres (0.94 km2) of protected natural habitat featuring a jade green pool into which a 50-foot (15 m) waterfall flows.
The pool is surrounded by large slabs of limestone that rest by the water's edge; large stalactites grow from the ceiling high above. The ceiling and surrounding cliffs of the grotto are home to moss, maidenhair fern, and cliff swallows. The Ashe juniper (cedar) uplands of the preserve are home to the endangered golden-cheeked warbler.
The natural pool and creek are not chemically treated, so water quality is monitored regularly and swimming is occasionally restricted. Hamilton Pool is part of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve and is a protected environment.

Swimming at Hamilton Pool, Dripping Springs, Texas
Totally a TTO (This Time Only) but glad we crossed Hamilton Pool in Dripping Springs off our list! The scenery was beautiful and likely even more breathtaking in the fall. If only the water weren't so murky it would have been a hit!
Hamilton Pool | The Paradise of Texas
We found Paradise and you'll never guess where we found it. This place is unreal, magical you might even say. Vanlife takes us to two new places today, the kinds of locations you wouldn't have guessed even existed in the State of Texas. Yes, that's right. Texas actually contains places that look more like Hawaii or Costa Rice, but actually, they aren't too far from Austin. We take a roadtrip from Austin to Jacob's Well and Hamilton Pool. Jacob's Well is considered one of the most dangerous dive spots in the world, and Hamilton pool, well it's just an underground river that was exposed when the dome collapsed. And now it's an amazing Paradise full of flora, fauna, blue-green and turquoise waters to swim in. Its housed in a half cave on one side, and a forest on the other. Most of the time there is a waterfall coming down right into the middle of it. Come with us as we roadtrip around the USA in our van and take vanlife to the next level.
