Alexander Hamilton and New Jersey
Alexander Hamilton was a founding father of the United States and its first Secretary of the Treasury. During the Revolutionary War, he served as chief staff aide to General George Washington in the Battles of Trenton and Princeton. Later, he created the Society for the Establishment of Useful Manufactures in Paterson, New Jersey, a site chosen for the energy produced by the Great Falls of the Passaic River. In 1804, Hamilton was shot and killed in a duel by Vice-President of the United States Aaron Burr. A monument marks the site in Weehawken, New Jersey.
It Happened Here: New Jersey is a production of Kean University, in partnership with the New Jersey Historical Commission. Additional funding is provided by the Brotherton Trust and AT&T. The series is narrated by Willie Geist, and produced by PCK Media. For more information about New Jersey's 350th Anniversary, visit officialnj350.com.
Alexander Hamilton in NEW JERSEY
Did you know this? All throughout the Revolutionary War, today's most beloved Founding Father spent more time in New Jersey than anywhere else. Walk in Hamilton's shoes from Alpine to Amboy, Bedminster to Bridgewater, Paramus to Princeton, Trenton to Teaneck, Whippany to Wayne. Whether it was getting called up to the majors to serve as aide to General George Washington, falling in love, or hatching a plan to get a wobbly infant United States up on its feet with a strong dose of legal fortitude called the Constitution, New Jersey is where it happened. Come recount all the play by play that Broadway doesn't seem to think matters. From New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Hennessey and smashing comics artist Justin Greenwood.
RISE CHALLENGE HAMILTON NEW JERSEY
Robbery (Attempted) & Shooting 2200 S Broad St Hamilton NJ 2017-12-30
Occurred at the 7-Eleven convenience store, 2200 S Broad St, Hamilton, NJ on Thursday, December 30th, at 11:40 PM.
Two unknown black males entered the convenience store and approached the counter. One of the suspects then pulled a handgun from his hoodie and lept over the counter. The other suspect followed him over the counter and began to unload the register.
A security guard then entered the store, and immediately opened fire on both suspects. The first suspect who was holding the handgun declared it was fake. The security guard responded, in epic fashion, Mine's real
The security guard then lept over the counter and took control of the suspects. It appeared the first suspect was hit in the right arm, the second suspect was apparently shot as well, but his injuries is unknown.
There is no word on the extent of the injuries to both suspects, nor is there any information whatsoever on the Hamilton Township police blog. No word if the police are even investigating this crime.
It seems the Trenton/Hamilton area has dozens of burglaries, robberies, thefts and assaults every day. Perhaps this crime just went unnoticed.

The United States After The Revolution
The United States After The Revolution
Post War uncertainty
After the war it was unclear if the new nation would survive. Both Congress and the States were hopelessly in debt. The States could hope to use land sales to finance themselves while Congress had no such recourse being unable to raise money through taxation, only being able to request funds from the states at their discretion. Congress took to paying it’s bills through paper money which was greatly depreciating in value dwindling to basically nothing. The Continental Army veterans had to accept this money or go unpaid.
Post War Debt Crisis
The more the money devalued the more the Stats tried to keep their citizens from using it. This led to an awkward situation where it became apparent that individual states were trying to bankrupt the National government to protect themselves. Virginia and North Carolina in particular taxed Continental securities in order to get their citizens to liquidate them. Maryland and New Jersey soon began to fund their states portion of the National debt in their own State issued currency. Others refused to accept Continental Money to pay for State Taxes. Some States offered to redeem Continentals currency in State Currency in order to hold the paper money has an additional check on the National government as a fiscal hostage.
Shays Rebellion
In 1786 mobs gathered in the Western districts of Massachusetts and opposed the sale of debtors properties by state officers with armed resistance. Led by Daniel Shayes a small army of war veterans, debtors and farmers marched on the state militia arsenal at Springfield. Being driven off at the last moment by the militia. This event shook the States governments. Massachusetts in her hour of need appealed to the Confederation Congress for assistance only to be told that the Confederation Congress had no power to intervene in the affairs of the States. Like they should have expected since they intentionally kept the national government weak.
State of Franklin
The western districts of Virginia ands North Carolina across the Appalachian mountains in what is now Kentucky and Tennessee dissatisfied with the State governments met and declared themselves the state of Franklin. They then debated whether to join the Confederation or Spanish Empire
Liberty
The notion of Freedom and Liberty itself was also evolving. The old guard of Americans the elites of the 1760’s and 70’s were of the opinion that Liberty meant the right to govern themselves. Those who acceded to power after the war held the opinion that liberty meant access to the political process, radical restraint on personal property to ensure economic equality.
Changing of the Political Elite
The older generation of national figures from the 1760’s and 70’s were either dead, out of politics, retreated to state politics or left to live abroad. The thought of themselves as Virginians and Pennsylvanians not Americans. They were happy to see the Confederation weak and subordinate to the States. With the exodus of the loyalists after the war, their place in local, state and national politics was filled by middle class men, mechanics, artisans, laborers who soon began to organize themselves in to political associations to guard against the designs of Lawyers, Moneyed Men and Learned Men. New Hampshire, New York and New Jersey saw these middle class men move from less than 20% to over 50%.
New National men
By 1785 the majority of the revolutionary leadership had died or fallen from public favor being replaced with new men who only had Continental experience. These men did not remember the Stamp Act or the Stamp Act Congress, The Seven Years War or Tea Parties. They came of age during the great war they remembered Valley Forge, Yorktown and Saratoga. They were committed to the nation not the individual states themselves. John Marshall for example was a Virginian who served as a soldier in the Continental Army and said of his experience “I was confirmed in the habit of thinking of America as my country and congress as my government.” Among the new men was Alexander Hamilton the illegitimate son of a Scottish merchant from the island of Nevis. Who through the effort of a friendly clergyman was able to obtain an appointment to King’s College in New York. But he keenly felt the sting of illegitimacy. He eagerly joined the revolution to advance himself. He formed his own company of volunteers and eventually was invited by Washington to join his staff. He even led a charge at Yorktown.
Hamilton was appalled by the bickering between the states. The State legislature were filled with quarrelsome oligarchs bent on stall the progress and economic growth of the new nation. The state governments that were hobbling congress and destabilizing the national government were bound to transgress to far and give rise to a broad appeal for change.

Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) Overview
A Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) is where applicants for military service go to complete the enlistment process. There are 65 MEPS in the United States and Puerto Rico. Applicants who must travel a distance will receive free lodging at a nearby hotel. Meals and transportation are also provided at no cost.
Nicknamed Freedom's Front Door, MEPS are staffed with military and civilian professionals who carefully screen each applicant to ensure he or she meets the physical, academic and moral standards set by each Service. To do so, each applicant goes through the following steps:
- Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) testing
- Career Counseling
- Physical Exam
- Background Screening
- Oath of Enlistment
Following the Oath, an applicant is now a full member of the U.S. Military. At this point, he or she may ship directly to Basic Training for his or her branch, or enroll in the Delayed Entry (or Enlistment) Program (DEP) and undergo training at a future time. It can be a long day, and a lot happens quickly, but applicants are briefed at every step by MEPS staff, and there is always help available should questions arise.

Picturing Alexander Hamilton
Heidi Applegate, guest lecturer. Coinciding with the Kennedy Center’s production of the Broadway musical Hamilton, guest lecturer Heidi Applegate surveys works of art featuring Alexander Hamilton in this presentation delivered August 5, 2018, at the National Gallery of Art. The American painter John Trumbull and the Italian sculptor Giuseppe Cerrachi are Hamilton’s best known portraitists thanks to the countless reproductions of their works made after Hamilton’s death. Several other artists also created portraits of Hamilton from life, many of which were replicated during the 19th century. Applegate also discusses portraits of Hamilton’s family members and other founding fathers who were important to Hamilton’s political career, as well as the major posthumous paintings and monuments that helped to secure Hamilton’s legacy.
