This trail starts at Ke'e and is part of the Kalalau Trail along the Napali Coast. This sweet trail takes you to the 1st pit stop at Hanakapi`ai Beach. From there we took a trail inland to the waterfall.

Kalalau Trail to Hanakapi’ai Falls Timelapse — Kauai, Hawaii
A time lapse video of the hike from Ke’e Beach to Hanakapi’ai Falls. It’s 2 miles along the Kalalau Trail to the first stream crossing at Hanakapi’ai Beach, then 2 more miles up to Hanakapi’ai Falls for a total of 4 miles one way to reach the waterfall.
You now need a day permit (and ideally a parking pass) for this hike. As you can see there are far less people on the trail!

Hanakapi'ai or Hanakapiai Falls - Kalalau Trail - KAUAI
It's an 8 mile roundtrip hike on the famous Kalalau trail on the north shore of Kauai to Hanakapi'ai Falls. The trail conditions are best for experienced intermediate to advanced hikers. This was my 4th hike on this trail, and each time the trail conditions were different (varying amount of slipperiness and number of stream crossings) depending on the recent and current weather conditions. It's a fairly rigorous hike, but those willing and able to go the distance are rewarded with this spectacular 300 foot high waterfall in a magnificent setting. Tropicbirds are usually flying high above as they are in this video, which adds to the magical charm of the place. I'm not sure if they're white-tailed (Koa'e kea) or red-billed (Koa'e 'ula) tropicbirds.

Kauai, Hawaii - Na Pali Coast - Kalalua Trail to Hanakapiai Falls hike
My husband and I spent a week in Kauai in October 2013. On our first day we were still acclimated to 6 hours earlier Texas time so we got up bright and early and started this hike as soon as the sun came up and the 15 minute rain shower stopped. We were on the trail by 6:30 each carrying 70 ounces of water in a camel back and some trail mix and granola bars. We hiked the first section of the Kalalau trail to Hanakapiai beach and Hanakapiai Falls. This video was shot with a GoPro Hero 3 Black and a GoPole to get the selfie shots.
My husband used a Cannon 7D with an 18 to 55mm lens. The intro is a screen shot from Google Earth showing the trailhead, beach and falls. At 5:57 I inserted a picture from our Helicopter tour showing the Hanakapiai Beach from the air. I have hiked all over the US and would say that all hikers should put this one on their bucket list as one of the must see trails in your lifetime. With only the 15 minute rain the trail was very slippery so try for a day with no rain.
The views of the Na Pali coast hiking along the cliffs and after 2 miles we reached the beach After 4 miles we arrived at the 300' waterfall and swam in the cool clear water. The hike was difficult but should be on everyone's bucket list.

Hanakapi'ai Falls Hike, Kauai Hawaii
The hike begins at the end of the road at Kee Beach on the North Shore. Pick up a good hiking stick at the trail check-in station. From the beginning you start an incline, which seems to be a vertical rock stream bed. The first ¾ of a mile is fairly steep and rocky and can be muddy, but 25 minutes into your hike you get a great overlook of Kee Beach. If you don't have much time at least hike up to the overlook, it's worth the trip up. Stop and take photos of your first view of the Na Pali Coastline and Kee Beach.
Continuing on the trail switches back and forth following the coastline as you continue to climb. Occasionally you get viewpoints of the incredible coastline.The last half a mile to the Hanakapi'ai Beach is slow going back down hill and is steep and muddy as the trail crosses several small streams. 2 miles from the start you reach Hanakapi'ai Beach. You have to cross a pretty fast moving stream by hopping boulders. The reward is a beautiful beach that has rock caves carved out of the cliffs. Many people stop here and make this their final destination before their return. The views back are just as amazing. In the winter months there may not be a beach at all, just rocks, but it still definitely worth the trip.
If you have time (another 3-4 hours) another 2 miles inland is a beautiful 300-foot waterfall you can swim in. The trail begins right of the stream from the beach. The hike to Hanakapi'ai Falls is muddy because you cross the stream several times. Several of the stream crossings are challenging. Along the trail are several bamboo forest (they sound like a wind chime forest) and lots of mud. At the falls take a minute to see all the ferns lining the wall around the falls. Several smaller falls are along the trail, which creates a very peaceful sound as you hike. If you decide to swim, be careful of objects coming over the falls. Round trip plan on 7-8 hours but it can be done in less time if you don't spend time at the beach and falls. Total hike to the falls and back is 8 miles. I have actually done 3 miles in on the Kalalau Trail, backtracked to the Falls, and back out in just 6 hours. A total of 10 miles.
Kauai Hanakapiai Trail
In Kauai, I hit the trails to the Hanakapiai Falls early in the morning. Had the waterfall pall all to myself for 45 mins! The water was ice cold and beautiful.

Kalalau Trail to Hanakapiai Falls in HD!- Na pali Coast - Kauai, Hawaii
The Kalalau Trail is a trail along the Nā Pali Coast of the island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii. The trail is very strenuous and runs approximately 11 miles (18 km) along the island's north shore from Keʻe Beach to the Kalalau Valley. An experienced, very fit hiker can complete the trail in about a day, but most people require two days and will camp along the trail. At this time camping is only permitted at Hanakoa Valley (6 mile mark) and Kalalau Beach.
The trail is located in the Nā Pali Coast State Park and access is controlled in the cause of conservation. A limited number of permits are issued for camping in Kalalau Valley every year. In spite of the efforts of the state of Hawaiʻi, many people camp at Kalalau Beach without permits.
The trail starts on the north shore of the island, where the main highway ends at Keʻe Beach. The first two miles (3 km) of the trail are moderately strenuous and open to the public. It is one mile uphill and one mile downhill. This portion of the trail leads to Hanakapiai stream and beach. The trail beyond Hanakapiʻai used to be only open to those with camping permits or with day use permits. As of January 1, 2012 hikers are now permitted to day hike to Hanakoa Valley which is 6 miles from the trail head. From Hanakoa you can then hike about 1/2 mile to Hanakoa Falls which is a large spectacular waterfall, better than the falls at Hanakapiai. Be aware that the trail to Hanakoa Falls is not well maintained and sometimes difficult to follow. The trail begins after the Hanakoa stream crossing, just before the covered shelter.
Hanakapi'ai Beach on the Kalalau Trail on Kauai's Nāpali Coast [HD]
Hanakāpīʻai Beach is a beautiful beach found 2 miles along the Kalalau Trail on the Nāpali Coast Kauai. The currents in the ocean found off this beach are extremely powerful. It is not recommend to enter the water but if you do, use extreme caution.

This out and back hike in Waimea Canyon State Park, Kauai offers stunning views of Waimea Canyon, known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. The hike travels along the canyon ridge with steep dropoffs before it ends on the top of the incredible Waipoo Falls.

Just after the river at the end of Mile 2 on the Kalalau Trail, Napali Coast of Kauai, Hawaii is Hanakapi'ai Beach. It is known for it's strong currents and many deaths etched into a piece of wood as you approach. Please do not swim here. May God bring peace to the family of Janet Ballesteros.
Running the Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali Coast of Kauai
The Kalalau Trail leads 11 miles along the rugged Nā Pali Coast on the north shore of the island of Kauai, Hawaii. The Trail traverses 5 lush valleys, above towering cliffs, before ending at Kalalau Beach where it is blocked by sheer, fluted pali. Most will take between 2-3 days to finish the trail.
