Nuremberg (Germany) Travel - Henkersteg
Take a tour of Henkersteg in Nuremberg, Germany -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Henkersteg, meaning Hangman's Bridge, lies in the stunning ancient town of Nuremberg in the southern state of Bavaria, Germany.
Between the 16th and 19th centuries, the town's hangman resided in the segregated tower of this structure, resulting in its daunting moniker.
This bridge was constructed to replace part of the town's fortified wall, after it was washed away by a devastating flood.
In the mid 20th century, after being damaged by war, this stone based, wood covered, and tile roofed structure was reconstructed.
Medieval Germany was highly influenced by religious and folkloric superstition, and it was because of this that the town hangman had to live in absolute seclusion.
This once taboo structure is now cherished by the town, and provides beauty, function, and a stark but interesting history.

Medieval Music * Mit Ganczem Willenh - Conrad Paumann & Música Antigua - Eduardo Paniagua
This so beautiful instrumental called Mit Ganczem Willen (With all my heart I wish you), was composed by Conrad Paumann (c. 1410 -- 1473), born in Nuremberg, Germany. Although he was blind, it didn't stop him becoming widely known as a master organist, composer and lutenist. In 1447 he became the official town organist of Nuremberg. This piece is taken his famous book about organ playing (1452), called Fundamentum Organisandi. Being as rebellious as he was talented, he left what was probably a stifling environment, and went secretly to Munich in 1450, where he was immediately employed by Duke Albrecht III as court organist, who also gave him a house. Munich was officially his home for the remainder of his life, although he began to travel extensively. Paumann, being blind, never wrote down his music, and may have been an improviser above all. He has been credited with inventing the system of tablature for the lute in Germany; while it cannot be proven, it seems reasonable both because of Paumann's influence, and because of the ease with which music can be dictated using tablature. Unquestionably his influence had much to do with the subsequent development of a culture of organ-playing and composition in Germany, a tradition which culminated in the 18th century with the work of J.S. Bach.
This version of this marvelous song is performed by Música Antigua directed by legendary Spanish composer, and musician - Eduardo Paniagua. Song can be found on album La Conquista de Granada from 2004.
It is interesting to note that this song has been used as one of the main themes of the legendary Fantasy Role Play game: The Darklands, by Microprose, 1992
In the movie you can see many authentic photos of Nuremberg as Imperial palace, Hangman Bridge, St Lawrence Cathedral...The main inspiration for making this video was legendary historical artifact: The Nuremberg Chronicle book. An illustrated biblical paraphrase and world history that follows the story of human history related in the Bible, includes the histories of a number of important Imperial cities. Written in Latin by Hartmann Schedel, with a version in German, translation by Georg Alt, it appeared in 1493. It is one of the best-documented early printed books—an incunabulum —and one of the first to successfully integrate illustrations and text.

Where Eagles Dare
The mission is clear. Get in. Get the general. Get out. Commandos charged with freeing a U.S. general from an Alpine fortress should also be told to trust nothing -- including the search-and-rescue orders just issued.
Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood go Where Eagles Dare in this twisty World War II thriller written by action master Alistair MacLean (The Guns of Navarone, Ice Station Zebra) and directed by Brian G. Hutton (Kelly's Heroes). Known for fiery dramatic roles, Burton ventures into the realm of movie pyrotechnics with dynamic efficiency. And Eastwood's cool-fire presence heightens one searing action sequence after another.
Thirty Years' War
The Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) was a series of wars principally fought in Central Europe (primarily present-day Germany), involving most of the European countries. It was one of the most destructive conflicts in European history, and one of the longest continuous wars in modern history.
Initially, religion was a motivation for war as Protestant and Catholic states fought even though many of them were or had been members of the Holy Roman Empire—a situation which was not atypical of the Empire, which had become decentralized and fragmented following the death of Charlemagne (814 AD). Changing the relative balance of power within the Empire was at issue. Gradually, it developed into a more general conflict involving most of the great powers of Europe. In this general phase, the war became less specifically religious and more a continuation of the Bourbon–Habsburg rivalry for European political pre-eminence, leading in turn to further warfare between France and the Habsburg powers.
