Chinese Arts and Crafts: The Art of Copper
In Hangzhou, there is an old copperhouse entirely made of copper which belongs to Zhu Bingren. His family has been coppersmiths for five generations. When reaching its melting point, 1083°, the hard metal turns into soft liquid. Zhu Bingren finds beauty in the flowing copper liquid, and pours it into the desired shapes. These shapes become permanent as the metal cools and solidifies again. So, what kind of shapes will they be like?

Session 議題 2: Women, textile and technology in Hong Kong and China 女性、紡織與科技在香港和中國的發展與趨勢
Speakers 講者:
Francesca Bray, Professor of Social Anthropology, The University of Edinburgh
白馥蘭 (愛丁堡大學社會人類學教授)
Francesca Bray is a historian of science, technology and medicine in imperial China, trained in Chinese studies and anthropology. As an anthropologist, Bray is fascinated by the macro- and micro-politics of technologies, past and present. She has specifically looked at how technology has expressed and shaped gender roles throughout Chinese history. In Technology and Gender: Fabrics of Power in Late Imperial China (1997) and Technology, Gender and History in Imperial China (2013), Bray demonstrates how gender principles were woven into the very fabric of the Chinese empire, from cosmology and ideologies of rule to the material foundations of the state and the everyday practices of the domestic sphere.
Nan geng nü zhi 男耕女織 (men plough, women weave) was a popular mantra for state officials and ordinary folk alike in imperial China: men’s work in the fields fed the family and the empire, women’s work at the spindle or loom clothed them. Bray’s work analyses how these moral ideals fared in the face of dramatic changes in the Chinese economy and social order.

TripaDeal TVC - China Deal
THE CUSTOMER
TripADeal is an online travel store that offers unique travel experiences around the world at reduced prices.
Based in Byron Bay on the idyllic NSW North Coast, the company has in recent years grown to become Australia’s leading Travel Deals website.
THE CHALLENGE
TripaDeal approached us to produce a a series of TV Commercials, to air in August 2015, featuring their new Brand Ambassador Shelley Croft.
TEN ALPHAS needed come up with a solution to produce each new deal quickly and cheaply, whilst retaining the Brand Ambassador, whom was only available for limited production days. The scripts therefore needed to allow for variations to be implemented in post-production.
THE SOLUTION
The treatment we proposed incorporates the design of the TripADeal print ads, linking the TVCs to TripADeal's current media strategy and branding.
We filmed Shelley Croft in a Green Screen Studio in Byron and added the print ad’s master image in the background during post.
In the ‘About the Deal’ section of each commercial we added a voiceover over animated deal specifics (text and images). This voiceover allowed for last minute changes where necessary.
We believe the final videos represent TripADeal's values of fun and excitement, and strengthen and enhance its existing branding.

Medieval China: Crash Course History of Science #8
Like Egypt, Sumer, and Mesoamerica, ancient China represents a hydraulic civilization—one that maintained its population by diverting rivers to aid in irrigation—and one that developed writing thousands of years ago. Today, we’re going to focus on the time of the Northern and Southern Song Dynasties, a time of great technical innovation. But, before we get to the Song, let’s take a tour through the ages and explore key elements of Chinese scientific culture.
