Hanoi, Vietnam Old Quarter walking tour
Hanoi's Old Quarter is one of the great destinations in Asia, densely packed with open store-fronts, lots of people, scooters buzzing by, many cheap places to eat, historic buildings and friendly people. The Old Quarter of Hanoi is often known as the 36 streets, but in fact, now there are more than 36 streets, each one providing rewards for the intrepid visitor. 35. The old quarter is different from other places in Hanoi. Preserving the houses in the old quarter is very necessary, and according to the plan, the Hanoi people committee are planning to preserve the old houses in the old quarter, so it can keep the original state. However the planned renovations might change the existing historic character, so you better visit soon to get this authentic old-fashioned experience.

Hà Nội - Walking in Hanoi, Vietnam
Hanoi (UK: /(ˌ)hæ-, həˈnɔɪ/ ha-, hə-NOY, US: /hɑː-/ hah-NOY; Vietnamese: Hà Nội [hàː nôjˀ] (About this soundlisten)) is Vietnam's capital and second largest city by population (7.7 million in 2015). The city mostly lies on the right bank of the Red River. Hanoi is 1,720 km (1,070 mi) north of Ho Chi Minh City and 105 km (65 mi) west of Haiphong.
From 1010 until 1802, it was the most important political centre of Vietnam. It was eclipsed by Huế, the imperial capital of Vietnam during the Nguyen Dynasty (1802–1945). In 1873 Hanoi was conquered by the French. From 1883 to 1945, the city was the administrative center of the colony of French Indochina. The French built a modern administrative city south of Old Hanoi, creating broad, perpendicular tree-lined avenues of opera, churches, public buildings, and luxury villas, but they also destroyed large parts of the city, shedding or reducing the size of lakes and canals, while also clearing out various imperial palaces and citadels.
From 1940 to 1945 Hanoi, as well as most of French Indochina and Southeast Asia, was occupied by the Japanese empire. On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam). The Vietnamese National Assembly under Ho Chi Minh decided on January 6, 1946, to make Hanoi the capital of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam, and it became the capital of a reunified Vietnam in 1976, after the North's victory in the Vietnam War.
October 2010 officially marked 1,000 years since the establishment of the city. The Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural is a 6.5 km (4.0 mi) ceramic mosaic mural created to mark the occasion.
On July 16, 1999, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) presented the title “City for Peace” to Hanoi.

Food On Foot Hanoi | Old Quarter, Hanoi | Vietnam | We.Are.Wanderful
Food On Foot Hanoi
Old Quarter, Hanoi | Vietnam
We.Are.Wanderful
DECEMBER 22, 2017—We love food. And whenever we travel we always look for the opportunity to try local cuisines and delicacies. We especially look for street food.
So it is no surprise that when we visited Hanoi, Vietnam in December 2017, a street food tour is a big part of our itinerary. Our food trip in Hanoi is actually our most memorable food tour, to date.
It was set for 6:30pm on December 22 and it is expected to last until about 9:30pm. Three hours! That should be more than enough for us to fill our tummies and try as much of the local favorites that we can find.
However, we arrived late at the Old Quarter on that day because we came from Halong Bay earlier in the day and we kind of underestimated the travel time back to Hanoi as well as the rush-hour traffic getting into the Old Quarter. Nobody warned us that practically all of Hanoi (as in entire families and clans) are going to the Old Quarter for dinner!
Our Hanoi Food Tour Guide, Tommy, was eagerly waiting for us at our hotel and we got started with our Food On Foot Tour right away. The time was about 7:30pm.
We've been to many street food places in other countries but we never really experienced actually dining on the sidewalk. Well there's always a first time and and our first street dining — as in literally dining on the sidewalk — was happening on this day and time in the hyper-busy streets of Hanoi. We had mixed feelings of eager anticipation and nervous trepidation as we took our seats on mini-stools around mini-tables, with motorcycles, cars, and even buses zooming by on the street just a feet or two away! But as soon as our first local dish was served, Vietnamese Noodle Soup (with choice of chicken, pork, or beef), all our trepidations are gone. We were just too hungry from our trip and the street noodle soup was truly delicious.
We ate the equivalent of maybe 4 or 5 full meals in the next 3-4 hours, not counting the Shawarmas, BBQs, and anything that can be eaten standing up and/or walking. We had delicious dessert, too, in a place that is hardly seen and visited by tourists because it is very well hidden (practically only locals eat there).
By 11pm Tommy still wanted to bring us to at least a couple of places more but we already raised the white flag of surrender. We were too full already and also too tired from walking (with full stomachs!).
Our final stop was one of the popular local cafes where we tried the local favorites: Egg Coffee (Cà Phê Trứng) and Drip Coffee with Condensed Milk (Cà Phê Sữa Nóng).
Our Food On Foot Tour was officially finished by 11:30pm!
This is a short video presentation of our Food On Foot Adventure and Tour at Old Quarter in Hanoi. Enjoy watching.

Hanoi Vietnam nightlife 2019 - walking around The Old Quarter
Walking around The Old Quarter of Hanoi on weekend nights, to experiencing a different tradition can be hard to adapt, but very interesting as well.
The busy roads are blocked at night. No cars or any other type of transportation is allowed during night. The locals and tourists are free to roam the streets of the weekend night. The only noise you would hear is that of the crowded streets with people and music.
This walking street opens from 7p.m on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.

Hà Nội - Walking around 36 Streets - Old Quarter, Hanoi, Vietnam
The Old Quarter (Vietnamese: Phố cổ Hà Nội) is the name commonly given to the historical civic urban core of Hanoi, located outside the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long. This quarter used to be the residential, manufacturing and commercial center, where each street was specialized in one specific type of manufacturing or commerce.
Another common name referring to approximately the same area is the 36 streets (Vietnamese: Hà Nội 36 phố phường), after the 36 streets or guilds that used to make up the urban area of the city.
As the oldest continuously developed area of Vietnam, Hanoi’s Old Quarter has a history that spans 2,000 years and represents the eternal soul of the city. For those who visit Hanoi with a genuine desire to have a grasp of the city’s culture or a curiosity to travel back in time, Ha Noi Old Quarter is a must-go place that they definitely should not be missed by any means.
Located in the middle of Ha Noi, a rapidly developing city where changes take place every hour, Ha Noi Old Quarter with its old-styled narrow streets full of antique brick houses seems to nostalgically resist the flow of time while still actively trying to adapt to the dynamic atmosphere of the modern city.
Interestingly, Old Quarter is also known as the “36 Streets” because of the famous streets that make up the place, all named for the type of goods or service they were originally known for. There are streets which are named for selling silk, shoes, jewelry, etc.
Some of these streets still retain their original purpose so don’t be surprised when foreign tourists come across streets with most or all stores selling similar stuff or service.
Foreign tourists say: “Difficult to Walk, but Fascinating to Observe”. The Old Quarter is the heart and soul of Hanoi – there is so much going on here at any one time, your head is spinning. Life spills out of the homes onto the sidewalks, creating a fascinating scene, but also making walking through the area frustrating and not very safe, as you are forced into the streets where the motorbike hordes run you over. The heart of the Old Quarter is around the lake, where you can find more touristy restaurants and shops – much of the rest of the area you will find more local places, with tiny stools on the sidewalks serving Pho or small run-down cafes. These areas are not for everyone, but even if you don’t want to duck in and try some street food, it’s interesting to see. Nice to pick a particularly active area and sit with a beer and watch the chaos of Hanoi go by.

Vietnam Travel Guide: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ho Chi Minh
Gorgeous beaches, fascinating and complicated history, incredible food, lush nature; Vietnam is a country that truly has it all. Whether this country is first or fiftieth on your list, our travel guide has all the information you need to know if you’re planning (or dreaming of planning!) a trip to Vietnam.
Leave your expectations behind if you’re heading to Vietnam: here, you’ll eat noodles for breakfast, do your shopping in the middle of the night, and discover a country with a new story around every corner.
Hanoi more than delivers on urban excitement. If you’re looking for unique and mouth-watering food, the night markets of the Vietnamese capital should be your very first stop. You can enjoy a zippy ride on a scooter, all the street-food you can eat, and a night exploring the rapid development of this modern city. From trendy clubs to traditional puppet shows, experience a nightlife that’s all Vietnam’s own, and eat and drink the night away with locals and visitors alike!
Of course, Vietnam isn’t all fast-paced cities and rooftop bars. For a slower pace, head to Ha Long Bay and sail alongside limestone islets, with their lush rainforests towering above your head. The water is emerald-green, matching the vibrant greenery, and a sailing excursion here is like nothing else you’ve experienced before! A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the islets of Ha Long Bay are said have been thrown into the bay by a dragon protecting the people of Vietnam. Take a junk boat tour for a close encounter, or try scuba diving or snorkelling in the bay!
You’ll find a new adventure around every corner in Vietnam. From breakfast in the Bình Tây Market and a secret tunnel system in Ho Chi Minh City, to sailing along the Mekong Delta in a traditional basket boat, you can find your perfect trip - no matter what that looks like - somewhere in Vietnam.
There’s no time like the present to start planning an adventure of your own in this majestic country, so why not start today? Head over to TourRadar to explore the range of tours available, or watch more of our videos exploring Vietnam if you still haven’t gotten enough of seeing the beautiful views and incredible adventures you could be having.
