RUSSIA: VILLAGERS STILL PERFORM PAGAN RITUAL
Russian/Eng/Nat
Witches, wood goblins and mermaids may be the stuff of fairy tales, but deep in the heart of rural Russia - villagers still believe they exist.
Even though many are ardent followers of the Russian Orthodox Church, their Christianity goes hand in hand with these pagan beliefs.
Now a pair of academics, who want to preserve this culture - are organising teams of volunteers from the West to document traditions for posterity.
Most Orthodox Christians regard the festival of the Kazan Mother of God Icon is considered a minor event.
But 400 kilometres south west of Moscow, hundreds of believers flock to witness the unique celebrations in the tiny village of Snopot.
Here Christian Orthodoxy has become inextricably woven into pagan ritual.
The festival marks the day when - according to local tradition - an icon of the virgin Mary miraculously appeared from the river at Kazan.
The people of Snopot believe that water blessed during the festival becomes holy and has the power to heal.
The Church tried - unsuccessfully - to force villagers to abandon this superstition and now priests actually take part in the blessing.
Even the Communists knew not to tamper with the villagers long-held beliefs.
It's rituals like these that have attracted volunteers from the US-based organisation Earthwatch to observe and document village life in Snopot.
For many it's a way to see the real Russia, rather than the standard coach tour of the capital.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I prefer to just see how people live. I don't really care for the tourist attractions. I want to be with the people, see how they live, their daily lives.
SUPER CAPTION: Dennis Hink, Earthwatch volunteer
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I certainly expected after 20, 40 years of a Cold War that there would be much anti- American feeling, and I felt absolutely none. The people are totally amazed that we have come so far to come visit them in their village.
SUPER CAPTION: Susan Sitter, Earthwatch volunteer
Far from the comforts of the West, the Earthwatch volunteers live with locals in their own homes.
Zoyal Malenko's house is typical.
With no running water or gas she and her sister Alexandra cook on an open fire stove.
But it's not just their lifestyle that is a curiosity for the visitors but their pagan beliefs in mermaids, wood goblins and witches.
Alexandra said she once saw a woman near their house whom she first thought was a neighbour but then discovered was really a witch.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I went closer to it, and it rose up to its full height. Big. I thought my friend had put her sister on her shoulders and wanted to scare me. I said, I'm not afraid and went closer and it suddenly turned into a dog.
SUPER CAPTION: Alexandra Khamak, Snopot Resident
The rural idyll of Snopot provides the perfect backdrop for the volunteers to gather material about the folklore traditions of the region.
With little migration from this area, customs and beliefs from the last thousand years have been well preserved.
It provides rich pickings for Dr Yelena Minyonok and her husband Sergei from the Russian Academy of Sciences.
They've organised the Earthwatch group to help them compile a video encyclopaedia of old folklore.
SOUNDBITE:
It's like the spirit of Russia and Russia's young people aren't interested in old traditions and old songs and it's a pity because it's extremely interesting and it's our heritage.
SUPER CAPTION: Dr Yelena Minyonok, folklore expert
During the Kazan Mother of God Icon festival, the river of Snopot becomes as holy for villagers, as the Ganges is for Hindus.

Russian witches form 'circle of power' to support Putin
Dozens of witches and seers gathered in the Russian capital Moscow on Tuesday, chanting spells and incantations to protect President Vladimir Putin. The coven called for anyone who wished to hate upon Russia to 'return to the abyss' and for Russia to 'step away from grief and poverty... and open the gates of happiness'. The idea is to improve the quality of life in Russia and in turn make the world better.

Trump says special counsel inquiry into Russia ties 'greatest witch hunt' in history
“이건 마녀사냥이야”‥특검 억울한 트럼프
U.S. President Donald Trump has blasted the Justice Department's decision to appoint a special counsel to oversee the inquiry into Russian influence on last year's presidential election.
Taking to Twitter, Mr. Trump called it the greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history.
With more on this and other news around the world...we turn to Ro Aram..
Aram.. the president's latest comments are in stark contrast to his earlier statement in which he said the probe will prove he's innocent....
That's right Mark... it seemed as if Mr. Trump was confident in the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel, but on Thursday his Tweets showed he wasn't happy with the new man heading the Russia investigation.
Let's take a closer look.
Shortly after Mueller was assigned to lead the Russia probe on Wednesday, the president said it would prove that his campaign did not collude with any foreign entity, adding that he looked forward to this matter concluding quickly.
But, in a Twitter rampage the day after, Mr. Trump said it was the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history.
He made the same comments to reporters at the White House alongside Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos, again insisting there was no collusion between his campaign and Moscow.
AP - 4097034 / 3
Well, I respect the move but the entire thing has been a witch hunt and there is no collusion between, certainly, myself and my campaign and I can always speak for myself and the Russians - zero.
In his Tweets, he also complained that there was never a special counsel for what he called the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign and the Obama Administration.
He did not mention what these illegal acts were.
President Trump also denied reports claiming he told former FBI Director James Comey three months ago to drop the investigation into ex-National Security Advisor Michael Flynn's ties to Russia.
AP - 4097044 / 1
: Did you at any time urge former FBI Director James Comey, in any way, shape or form, to close or to back down the investigation into Michael Flynn. And also as you look back--
: No. No. Next question.
He also defended his decision to fire Comey last week, saying it was because of his poor performance and popularity.
However, Democrats have said the dismissal was because Comey was leading the probe into Russia's alleged election meddling, and have called for an independent investigation.
The Justice Department's appointment of Mueller has been welcomed by both Democrats and Republicans.

“We still have to work hard so that relations between Russia and the United States get better in the New Year so that the number of friends between Russians and Americans grows”, Antonov said, in an address to the US Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman, his wife Mary Kaye Huntsman and the US Embassy staff in Moscow.
Antonov wished his US colleagues good health and good cheer, adding that the Russian Embassy staff are happy for their US counterparts who are spending the New Year’s holiday in Russia, “in snowy colourful Moscow.”

Russia: Reopening communication channels is priority - Lavrov on Trump-Putin
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed his hope that communication channels between Moscow and Washington could be rebooted as a result of the Helsinki meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, in an interview for RT America recorded in Moscow on Friday.
The ideal outcome would be to agree to engage all the channels on all the issues, he told host Larry King.
Russia's top diplomat revealed that he would be accompanying Putin at the summit. However, the two presidents will meet alone, as per a request from the White House.
Putin and Trump will meet in the Finnish capital on July 16.

Russia: Johnson jokes he allowed Lavrov search his pockets upon entering FM
British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson said, I want you to know the measure of my trust explaining that as soon as he entered the Russian Foreign Ministry building, he handed all his belongings Lavrov, everything that was in my pockets – secrets or otherwise, speaking during a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow, on Friday.
Lavrov joked, I can say that in the pockets of his coat, there was nothing.
Bosris also called himself a committed Russofile stating, I am the first foreign secretary in the history of my office to be called Boris. Probably it is very likely to be the last for some time. Lavrov added, I trust Boris and pronounced Boris' name with the stress on the last vowel as it is pronounced in Russian.
Johnson arrived in Moscow on Thursday, on the first official visit made by a British foreign secretary to Russia in over five years.

Russia: Western demonisation of Russia 'not a big deal' - Lavrov
The “demonisation” of Russia by the Western countries is “not a big deal”, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Tuesday, while speaking to journalists in Moscow. He added that Russia should get used to it. Never in history have our partners been completely sincere with us”.
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister (Russian): Well, yes, demonisation happens, it is not a big deal. We should get used to it. Never in history have our partners been completely sincere with us.
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister (Russian): We should be friends with everyone, we should harmonise good relations – this is our position. The concept of foreign policy presupposes a multi-vector nature, readiness for partnership and cooperation with all those who are ready to take it on an equal footing, based on the interests of each other. But when pushing this line, it is necessary to remember that our main allies are the army, fleet and now aerospace forces.

Russia: 'The law is the law' – Peskov on US investor Calvey's case
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe
Courtesy: RT
Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitri Peskov commented on the case of US investor Michael Calvey, who is being investigated over fraud allegations, speaking in an exclusive interview on RT’s SophieCo, aired on Monday.
What comes to the Michael Calvey’ case, that’s a very unfortunate case, we are very sorry about that. Of course, we would like to see Michael among the participants of the [the St. Petersburg International Economic] forum because he’s been quite an active player in the Russian market since…For more than 15 years, said Peskov.
He [Putin] is receiving reports about that because it’s quite a loud case and he understands that it provokes lots of questions among some foreign investors. But the law is the law – you have to obey, he stated.
The Kremlin spokesperson also talked about the so-called Sovereign Internet bill that is coming into force in November, which is aimed at allowing the Russian internet segment to continue working if Russia is completely cut off from global infrastructure.
He stressed that we have to be self-sufficient, we have to be sovereign in all our capacities. All this is also applicable to the internet. Internet is an international environment but, unfortunately, we are living in a world where international law can be jeopardised by certain countries. We have to take measures of precaution.

Russia: Lavrov questions Obama's authority over the US military
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that the US security system is dictating foreign policy on Syria rather than obeying the White House, on Monday, in Moscow
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Foreign Minister of Russia (Russian): When the humanitarian convoy was hit on September 19, we demanded that an investigation be conducted. [US Secretary of State] John Kerry, a good partner of mine, behaved in a way he has never done before, he said that the investigation could possibly be carried out, but we know who did it, it was either the Syrian Army or Russia. But in any case that it is Russia's fault. Obviously he is was being cornered by strong criticism from the US military apparatus and despite the fact that the US commander-in-chief and President Barack Obama, always supported, as I was told, cooperation with Russia, and he confirmed it himself during the meeting with President Putin in China. It seems to me that the military may not be obeying their commander-in-chief too much.
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Foreign Minister of Russia (Russian): In practice they do everything in order not to touch al-Nusra at all. The American Coalition hits ISIS, yes, we can see that. But they only started seriously hitting them after the Russian Air Forces were deployed to Syria, on the request of the legitimate government of the country who are, by the way, members of the UN. But they are not hitting Jabhat al-Nusra at all. I asked John Kerry directly, even if it isn't him personally that someone in the United States, someone from the coalition led by them, wants to save al-Nusra, protect it from attack, not to allow it to weaken in order, for example, to channel all the opposition with al-Nusra in the direction of Damascus when they [the US] are done with ISIS, they [the opposition and al-Nusra] will seize power and so on. He swore that it is not true, but I will repeat that he said many things that were refuted later by the military and the US intelligence service.
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Foreign Minister of Russia (Russian): Therefore the brakes on the operations of this agreement are very stiff. And I think all of this is just a search for excuses not to cooperate with us, by referring to the fact that it is impossible to implement [an agreement] it in the current humanitarian situation. And why is the humanitarian situation worsening? It is Russia’s fault and we will not investigate anything.

STORYLINE:
More than 300 youngsters gathered in Moscow on Sunday to show their support for a private cartoon-only television network that has been criticised for screening certain animated series.
The station, 2x2, broadcasts series such as the Simpsons and South Park, which are enjoyed by legions of fans all over the world.
Parents and religious groups in Russia have criticised the station about some of its content.
But the youngsters who came to protest in Moscow on Sunday, disagreed.
We came here in order to support our favourite TV channel. We want to focus public opinion on the infeasibility of revoking the licence of our favourite Channel 2x2, said Vladimir Chub, who watches the channel.
Early in March, Russia's media watchdog issued a warning regarding two programmes aired by 2x2.
It said that the Happy Tree Friends and Adventures of Big Jeff cartoons propagated violence and cruelty and were hazardous to the health, ethical and spiritual development of the nation's children.
An episode of South Park broadcast by 2x2 on 9 January was labelled extremist by Russian prosecutors.
The Prosecutor General's Office did not identify which episode its investigators found objectionable, but said it offends the honour and dignity of Christians and Muslims and insults the feelings of believers irrespective of their faith.
Under Russian law, a second official warning may result in the loss of the broadcasting license - and that is what a number of Russian Protestant church groups are now demanding.
The prosecutors opened their investigation into the South Park episode after receiving complaints from Protestant leaders, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported.
It quoted the head of the Russian Union of Evangelical Christians as saying prosecutors should ban the South Park cartoons on the grounds that they contain covert and overt propaganda of homosexuality and paedophilia as norms of sexual life.
The latest developments have lead to some media speculation that 2x2 may be the target of a takeover attempt.
The management of the cartoon-only television network insist their shows are no more offensive than soap operas and crime series aired by other Russian television networks.
Control bodies have received complaints from angry community who are not 2x2 spectators and never watch it. We want to demonstrate that in fact there is eleven millions of 2x2 spectators and we think their opinions should be listened too, said Natalia Isakova, Channel 2x2 marketing deputy director.

Russia: We aim to uphold 'justice in international affairs' - Lavrov
The purpose of Russian diplomacy is to “uphold the principles of justice in international affairs, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in Moscow on Wednesday. Lavrov was speaking at the 14th annual celebratory ceremony of the Diplomatic Worker’s Day at the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow.
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): Not only do we remember our comrades, we try to ensure the continuation of our work, to make full use of the experience that our predecessors left for us, especially when the current situation in the world today requires the maximum mobilisation of our efforts, of our veterans and youth, to act in the best traditions of Russian diplomacy.
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): It means to creatively take the initiative to generate new ideas that meet the demands of the times, uphold the principles of justice in international relations. Now there are few countries that try to follow these principles. Therefore, that tradition, that role played by Russian diplomacy, at all times, in upholding justice in international affairs, is particularly relevant today.
