Estonia regained its independence on 20 August 1991 and it was not until 31 August 1994, when the last Russian troops left Estonia. This massive structure in the Lahemaa National Park is a reminder of the dark era, when we were under the Soviet rule. It is also part of my roots, as my grandmother was born in a village just a few hundred meters from that base.
Hara Harbour and former Soviet Submarine Base in Estonia
Once occupied by an invading Soviet invasion force, the abandoned submarine base near Hara, Estonia is now being invaded by urban explorers and the curious.
Hara Submarine base was built by the Russian military between 1956 and 1958 and was used while they occupied Estonia until they fled in 1991 around the time of Estonian independence. The site has since fallen into disrepair and while the concrete foundations remain, the buildings have been gutted. The pier-like ruins are now a favorite location for anyone on urban safari.
The Hara Harbour is currently being developed into a functioning harbour for yachts from Scandinavia and further afield.

Matt and Andy Male there way through forests full of bears and wolves to the Estonian coastline at Hara Allveelavade Sadam, here they find the sad remains of a once proud submarine base and naval defence area! Graffiti and silence now engulfs the base but back in its heyday it would have been a busy military area!

Ehemaliger U-Boot Hafen der Roten Armee. Während der sowjetischen Besatzung zwischen 1956 und 1958 errichtet. Das Gebiet um das Dorf Hara wurde damit zur gesperrten Zone erklärt. Die Bewohner waren gezwungen, den Ort zu verlassen. Die Gebäude sowie der Leuchtturm wurden zerstört. Zu dieser Zeit war es einer von drei U-Boot Entmagnetisierungsbasen weltweit. 18km lange Kabel wurden vom Stützpunkt bis in neutrale Gewässer gelegt.

'The visor movements ... are not easy to understand. Damages, however, do exist which are not explainable - definitely not by the JAIC sequence-of-events - unless one is prepared to accept the only other alternative by which the same or similar movements and damages would have been created, namely the collision with another vessel. This would explain at least the very severe damage at the starboard side of the visor, created by an abrupt upwards movement and subsequent falling back of the visor and all the damages resulting there from. Time and again respective assumptions and allegations have come up in the course of the investigation either by survivor statements, e.g. observing a submarine conning tower near the heavily heeled ferry, or by external sources, but nothing concrete could so far be established, because information concerning submarines are classified.
As in many other still mysterious circumstances surrounding the sinking of the ESTONIA it remains for the Governments of Sweden, Estonia and Finland authorities to cast light into these dark areas'

Lost Places WWII secret German submarine base Porto Koufo Greece U Boot Hafen
Porto Koufo is located on the south-west point of the Sithonia peninsula in Greece. Kofos Limin (Deaf harbor) was mentioned by Thucydides, the ancient Greek historian. Ancient inhabitants gave it this name, because sea sounds could not be heard inside the bay. Porto Koufo has the largest natural harbor in Greece and a rich history. The harbor was used as a base by Turkish pirates and also during World War II by Germans for U-boats (because of its geographical location and direct access to the Aegean Sea). German army fortified the area and many of those fortifications are still visible.
Hara Ghost city
Abandoned Soviet Union military submarine base campus in Estonia, place called Hara. It was built almost for a thousand people around 1953. Place was once a Top Secret but now it betrayed by the narrow asphalt road in the middle of the forest.
