A DAY AT THE HARBIN OPERA HOUSE - #donotsettle x MAD Architects
This is the one we have been waiting for a looooong time! We are so happy the video is finally ready!
Are you ready to be taken along for a day at the Harbin Opera House?
This project has been on our list since its was first announced in 2013. Interest only sparked after seeing endless photos appear on our Instagram feed. We had to see this with our own eyes!
With the help from MAD Architects, we ventured out to Harbin, a city in the north-east of China.
A proper approach, always an essential part of visiting architecture, already proved mind-blowing. Rising up from the landscape, the fluid shapes form 2 venues, which encapsulate a large urban plaza. Arriving in the early morning, the plaza was already bursting with activity. What a beautiful sight for our still slightly tired eyes. From young kids to the elderly, the plaza proved to be a popular spot for Harbin’ers and tourists. And why wouldn’t it? With this architecture as backdrop, we could spend days on end observing every corner of this building. (OH WAIT! There is not one corner in this building. Everything blends together!!)
We ventured along the ‘mountain flanks’ making our way up the building to arrive at a viewing platform overlooking the city and the landscape. Wow! It felt like a proper mountain hike. Visitors interacting with the building, forms the absolute highpoint of this visit. But then we hadn’t seen the interior yet!
The interior is out of this world. There was no beginning, no end. It all blends together. The foyer is filled with light, merging interior and exterior. The Grand Hall, is well, Grand. In every possible meaning of the word. The interior forms spaces after space, each with its own views, own feelings, evoking different emotions.
The whole day was leading up to this moment, the whole visit was crafted around this last climax. Lights go dark and a group of well dressed young musicians enter the stage. Sounds are produced, creating an atmosphere that possibly only could happen in this space. Wow, what an experience, what a moment.
This building is not just a building. It’s a journey, an experience. This building is ARCHITECTURE.
We are so happy to finally have seen this project in person. We hope this video captured the feeling visiting this architecture from a new perspective.
If you ever have the chance to visit Harbin, runnnnn to this building. You will not be disappointed.
Thank you for the great team at MAD Architects to make this visit possible. We can not wait to be immersed by more mad architecture soon.
Thank you Rachel Li for accompanying, filming, translating and endlessly stalking people asking them for their opinions.
Have a great week ahead!

Text description provided by the architects. MAD Architects unveils the completed Harbin Opera House, located in the Northern Chinese city of Harbin. In 2010, MAD won the international open competition for Harbin Cultural Island, a master plan for an opera house, a cultural center, and the surrounding wetland landscape along Harbin’s Songhua River. The sinuous opera house is the focal point of the Cultural Island, occupying a building area of approximately 850,000 square feet of the site’s 444 acres total area. It features a grand theater that can host over 1,600 patrons and a smaller theater to accommodate an intimate audience of 400.

Inside Harbin's award-winning opera house
(15 Feb 2018) LEADIN:
Forget Sydney, a towering opera house in Harbin, China is winning awards and turning heads.
The north eastern city, in China's Heilongjiang province, is best known for its annual winter festival and ice sculptures.
STORYLINE:
On the east side of China's Songhua River, a new landmark - the Harbin Opera House.
From above, it looks like a swirling silver scarf, wrapping around the grand building.
It was completed in 2015 by Beijing-based architectural firm, MAD.
Ma Yansong, the founder of MAD, says he chose the location because he imagined the building as an extension of the surrounding river flows and wetlands.
The architecture should be taken as part of the landscape, he says.
The architecture should be taken as part of the landscape. The opera house appears to be a snow hill. From an aerial view, it looks like part of the river. It's completely curvilinear. It blends with the natural environment. It is an artificial work, (but) in my mind, it's also like a spirit from nature. Visitors to the opera house feel as if they were still in the natural environment.
Located on Harbin Cultural Island, the city's new cultural hub by Songhua River, the opera house covers 79,000 square metres (850,000 square feet).
It comprises two performing venues: a grand theatre that can accommodate an audience of 1,600, and a small arena with 400 seats.
Along the stairway, embedded in and spiralling around the exterior wall, visitors are led to a platform on the rooftop. It's there they can enjoy views of the entire cultural island.
Ma hopes the opera house will be a place where residents can spend their leisure time, even if they don't watch a musical performance.
Most importantly, the architecture is a friendly cultural symbol, he says.
It's very different from the so-called 'landmarks' which were designed as if they were statues.
The Opera House is undoubtedly another landmark, but it is a landmark partly because of its charm, another significant factor is because it is an essential destination for residents.
The same theme of fluidity continues in the interior.
Inside the lobby, curved wooden and white walls are decorated with starry lights.
The grand theatre is decked with curved, polished ash, like a section of a large instrument.
Raphael Schluesselberg is the conductor of orchestra, Symphonia Vienna. It was founded in Vienna in 1985.
Not only outside, but also inside, the whole auditorium with (these) round lines, almost no corners, it's also acoustically amazing, says Schluesselberg.
We just love to play here and be here and we really enjoy.
Since completion, the Harbin Opera House has received awards.
It became the first piece of Chinese architecture to be awarded 'Building of the Year' by international architecture website 'ArchDaily.'
Ma says China has now passed the era when lots of functional structures were needed.
With so many straight-lined and square buildings, he says it's now time for Chinese architects to think more about the natural environment, the community and local culture.
The Opera House is an innovation, he says.
Moreover, it's tightly integrated with nature, landscape and society. It's architecture that sprouts from local culture.

Description:
Inserted inside of Harbin’s wetlands, the Harbin Opera House was planned because of the power and soul of the northern city’s untamed wild and bone chilling atmosphere. Showing up as though etched by wind and water, the building flawlessly mixes in with nature and the geology—a transfusion of neighborhood personality, craftsmanship, and society. “We imagine Harbin Opera House as a social focal point without bounds – a huge execution venue, and in addition a sensational open space that encapsulates the reconciliation of human, workmanship and the city character, while synergistically mixing with the encompassing nature,” said Ma Yansong, establishing main, MAD Architects.
On the outside, the structural planning references the crooked scene of the encompassing region. The subsequent curvilinear façade made out of smooth white aluminum boards turns into the verse of edge and surface, non-abrasiveness and sharpness. The trip starts after intersection the scaffold onto Harbin Cultural Island, where the undulating building mass wraps an extensive open court, and amid winter months, dissolves into the blanketed winter environment.
The design parade choreographs a calculated account, one that changes guests into entertainers. After entering the fantastic anteroom, guests will see expansive straightforward glass dividers traversing the amazing entryway, outwardly uniting the curvilinear inside with the swooping façade and outside square. Taking off over, a crystalline glass drapery divider takes off over the fabulous hall space with the backing of a lightweight diagrid structure. Contained glass pyramids, the surface exchanges in the middle of smooth and faceted, referencing the surging snow and ice of the bone chilling atmosphere. Guests are welcomed with the straightforward extravagance of characteristic light and material sensation—all before sitting down.
Showing a warm and welcoming component, the terrific theater is clad in rich wood, imitating a wooden piece that has been delicately dissolved away. Etched from Manchurian Ash, the wooden dividers delicately wrap around the principle stage and theater seating. From the proscenium to the mezzanine gallery the excellent theater’s utilization of straightforward materials and spatial design gives world-class acoustics. The excellent theater is lit up to some extent by an inconspicuous bay window that interfaces the crowd to the outside and the progression of time.

Iwan Baan captures MAD's Harbin Opera House
The meticulous nature of architectural photography means it rarely provokes the viewer to question the story behind its result. In a new film, director Rasmus Daniel Taun turns the lens on Dutch photographer Iwan Baan as he documents the breathtaking Harbin Opera House in China's northernmost province—completed by Beijing-based MAD architects in 2015.
