Door County On The Water: Sailing
The combination of wind and water around the shores of Door County allow for fantastic sailing conditions. The interaction of bluffs and bays make for an exciting adventure. Anchor at a sandy bay, sail over Death's Door to Washington and Rock Island or cruise the canal. You haven't seen all of Door County until you've seen it from the water.

SB can stand for Sturgeon Bay the city, or Sturgeon Bay the body of water. If you ask John what “SB” stands for and he’ll say Super Busy! In the city of Sturgeon Bay, we nearly lost John to the many freelance opportunities he found. He loves WDOR, the local radio station, and could work at Third Avenue Playhouse tomorrow. He tried glass-blowing at Popelka Trenchard Glass and also visited Blue Front, Country Ovens, Scaturo’s, Holiday Music Motel and Snug Harbor. (5 of 13)

Caught a Monster Grouper that Weighed MORE than the BOAT
Max and I left the dock with one fishing mission, catch and release a Goliath Grouper that weighed more than his boat! The total weight of the boat hull is 550lbs, so we needed to find one of the largest Goliath Groupers in all of Florida to break this number. We started the day off fishing for bonito (false albacore). Within minutes, my reel started screaming and fish on! It turned out to be a huge snook! A monster Goliath Grouper tried to eat the snook while I was bringing it in. After releasing the snook, Max and I decided to try and catch the monster Goliath Grouper that tried to eat my snook. I used a live bonito for bait and then all of sudden there he was, the largest Goliath Grouper that I've ever seen! He ate the bait and immediately started towing the boat! We estimated the weight of this Goliath grouper between 600-700lbs.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Westown (#302)
[Latest Airdate: May 11, 2017]
[Original Airdate: January 16, 2014]
Since MPTV is based in Westown, we thought this would be an easy episode to produce. We were wrong -- too many choices! We began with places that start with Milwaukee Public - like the Library, the Museum, and Television (OK, that one was easy!). Some of our other selections are frequent stops, like the BMO Harris Bradley Center and Major Goolsby's. But how long has it been since you've walked into Mader's or Usingers, or since you've explored the Spice House, the Wisconsin Club or the Milwaukee River on a boat? John couldn't resist his chance to play the bagpipes (although perhaps he should have resisted that!) or to nose around a few new places, like the Moderne, and the BrewHouse.
We learned so much, but even John Gurda didn't know why East Town is two words and Westown is one. Seems a bit unfair. Oh, well. Westown may be lacking another T and a space, but it's not lacking anything else!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | The John Gurda Hour (#414)
[Original Airdate: April 23, 2015]
In our final episode of the season, it’s all about history and John Gurda - for an hour! During this season’s travels, John identified seven topics that he wanted to explore more fully: The Wade House (Greenbush), lannon stone (from Lannon – surprise!) and brownstone (Bayfield), Grant Park (South Milwaukee), the North Point Lighthouse (Milwaukee’s Lake Park), Great Lakes ship building (Sturgeon Bay) and the East Troy Electric Railroad (we don’t really have to tell you where this one is, right?).
In our regular community episodes of Around the Corner with John McGivern, we ask John Gurda to give us a three-minute version of the community’s history. Yep, three minutes. Well, for history buffs or nostalgic types, it’s just not enough time, right? So sit back and enjoy an hour of John Gurda relating what was by showing what is still here.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Bayfield (#409)
[Latest Airdate: August 16, 2018]
[Original Airdate: March 19, 2015]
John and the crew finally made it to the very northern tip of Wisconsin. Bayfield sticks out into what is by volume the largest freshwater lake in North America – the third largest in the world! That’s why it’s called Superior – did you know that? (Yes, we learned that from John Gurda.)
So you’d expect to go fishing, swimming, boating and kayaking, right? But how about doing all that surrounded by 22 islands? Yes, islands. It’s like our own Caribbean, only colder. In fact, in the winters when the conditions are right, there are ice caves – and people come from all over the world to see them.
In summer, you can take the ferry, like John did, and explore the largest island, Madeline, by bike, car or foot. When John found the Madeline Island Art School, he wanted to enroll right then and there. But there’s plenty to do back in Bayfield, too. You’ll find good food at Ethels at 250, great entertainment at Big Top Chautauqua, and if you’re lucky, you’ll see a ghost or two as you explore the cemeteries. (Hint: go with Mrs. Currie Bell. She died in 1882 and has the inside scoop!) Or just relax, be a tourist, and soak up the New England-like atmosphere.
If John could figure out a way to shorten the drive, he’d spend every summer weekend in Bayfield!

SUMMARY
=======
The Great Lakes (French: les Grands-Lacs), also called the Laurentian Great Lakes and the Great Lakes of North America, are a series of interconnected freshwater lakes located primarily in the upper mid-east region of North America, on the Canada–United States border, which connect to the Atlantic Ocean through the Saint Lawrence River. They consist of Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario, although hydrologically, there are four lakes, Superior, Erie, Ontario, and Michigan-Huron.
The Great Lakes are the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth by total area, and second largest by total volume, containing 21% of the world's surface fresh water by volume. The total surface is 94,250 square miles (244,106 km2), and the total volume (measured at the low water datum) is 5,439 cubic miles (22,671 km3), slightly less than the volume of Lake Baikal (23,615 km³, 22–23% of the world's surface fresh water). Due to their sea-like characteristics (rolling waves, sustained winds, strong currents, great depths, and distant horizons) the five Great Lakes have also long been referred to as inland seas. Not counting Lake Michigan-Huron, Lake Superior is the second largest lake in the world by area, and the largest freshwater lake by area. Lake Michigan is the largest lake that is entirely within one country. The Great Lakes began to form at the end of the last glacial period around 14,000 years ago, as retreating ice sheets exposed the basins they had carved into the land which then filled with meltwater. The lakes have been a major source for transportation, migration, trade, and fishing, serving as a habitat to a large number of aquatic species in a region with much biodiversity.
The surrounding region is called the Great Lakes region, which includes the Great Lakes Megalopolis.
Words at War: Combined Operations / They Call It Pacific / The Last Days of Sevastopol
The Siege of Sevastopol took place on the Eastern Front of the Second World War. The campaign was fought by the Axis powers of Germany, Romania and Italy against the Soviet Union for control of Sevastopol, a port in Crimea on the Black Sea. On 22 June 1941 the Axis invaded the Soviet Union under Operation Barbarossa. The Axis land forces reached Crimea in the autumn, 1941, and overran the area. The only objective not in Axis hands was Sevastopol. Several attempts were made to secure the city in October and November 1941. A major attack was planned for late November, but bad weather and heavy rains delayed the Axis attack until 17 December 1941. Under the command of Erich von Manstein, the Axis forces were unable to capture Sevastopol in the first stage of operations. The Soviets launched an amphibious landing on the Crimean peninsula at Kerch in December 1941, to relieve the siege and force the Axis to divert forces to defend their gains. The operation saved Sevastopol for the time being, but the landing was checked and repulsed in May 1942.
At Sevastopol the Axis opted to conduct a siege until the summer, 1942, at which point they attacked the encircled Soviet forces by land, sea and air. On 2 June 1942, the Axis began their operation, codenamed Störfang (Sturgeon Catch). The Soviet Red Army and Black Sea Fleet held out for weeks under intense Axis bombardment. The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) played a vital part in the siege. The Luftwaffe made up for a shortage of Axis artillery, providing highly effective aerial bombardment in support of the ground forces. Finally, on the 4 July 1942, the remaining Soviet forces surrendered and the Axis seized the port. Both sides had suffered considerable losses during the siege.
With the Soviet forces neutralised, the Axis refocused their attention on the major summer campaign of that year, Operation Blue and the advance to the Caucasus oil fields.
