A short film about my recent vacation to the US East Coast. I made a road trip from the Canadian boarder to Washington DC and had an absolute blast visiting the historic cradle of the USA!

Touring The - Nauticus Naval Museum Norfolk, VA & USS Wisconsin (BB-64)

Nauticus was incorporated under the National Maritime Center Authority in February 1988. The following month, Rear Admiral Jackson Knowles Parker USN, (Ret), retired commander of Norfolk Naval Base, became the Founding Executive Director. Construction began at the former site of Norfolk's Banana Pier on the downtown Norfolk Waterfront in February 1992 and Nauticus opened to the public in June 1994. Other attractions close by include the Virginia Zoo, Norfolk Scope and Harbor Park, home to the Norfolk Tides.

There is a great parking garage across the street from the Naval Museum. Park here and walk to many other great museums in the area. Including the Gen. Douglas MacArthur museum. The USS Wisconsin (BB-64) is next to this Museum. You enter the USS Wisconsin (BB-64) through the museum and this is where you purchase the tickets to go on the Wisconsin.

The City of Norfolk opened the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center—located at Nauticus on April 7, 2007. The 80,000-square-foot, passenger-friendly facility features views of the Elizabeth River; an enclosed, elevated passenger gangway; a retractable bridge leading into a 16-slip marina; a terrazzo floor tile in the entrance; a separate lounge and check-in area for cruise line VIP passengers; a security-focused Customs and Border Protection area and an embarkation stations. Its first passenger ship, RCI's Empress of the Seas, arrived on April 28 2007.

The Half Moone also serves as an event venue with approximately 23,000 square feet of event spaces, each of which include interpretation and exhibits. Among the areas available for special event rental are the Bermuda Room, which displays artifacts and objects that tell the historic connections between Virginia and Bermuda; the Half Moone Vista, which includes some facts about the original fort; and the Lido and Promenade Decks, which address functions of those traditional decks on board cruise ships.

The name—Half Moone—is taken from the name of the fort that was built on the same site in 1673 in the form of a half moone. The fort was built to protect Norfolk's burgeoning maritime industry.

The hour long North Bay Harbor Cruise is a fully narrated tour of North Island Naval Air Station, Shelter Island, the Naval Sub Base, and Cabrillo National Monument. The one-hour tour of South Harbor includes the Star of India, the U.S. Navy Surface Fleet, Coronado Bay Bridge, and the local shipyards. It is also fully narrated. The full bay tour is two hours in length and includes the points of interest from both the North and South Bay Tours.

Here is My U.S.S. Alabama Battleship Tour! My family and I decided to stop and check out the Battleship. We have driven past it several times over the years but we have never stopped by until today. It was amazing. Everything was so awesome!

USS Alabama (BB-60) - The Lucky A

USS Alabama, a 35,000 ton South Dakota class battleship, was built at the Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia. Commissioned in August 1942, she operated along the U.S. east coast in late 1942 and early 1943 and was then stationed in the North Atlantic to guard against the threat of raids by German heavy ships. Alabama was transferred to the Pacific in August 1943. During November of that year, she took part in the operation to capture the Gilbert Islands. In 1944, Alabama participated in taking the Marshalls, the Marianas and Leyte, the Battles of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf, and raids on Japanese positions elsewhere in the Pacific.

Following overhaul and training in January-April 1945, the battleship rejoined the fleet for operations in the Western Pacific, including attacks on the Japanese home islands. She took part in the occupation of Japan and the return of veterans to the United States in August-October 1945. USS Alabama decommissioned at the Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, Washington, in January 1947 and remained in reserve until struck from the Naval Vessel Register in June 1962. Two years later, she was turned over to the State of Alabama. Since September 1964, Alabama has been berthed at Mobile, Alabama, as a memorial to those who served and sacrificed during World War II.

USNS Comfort’s deployment to the region in support of Continuing Promise 15 is a demonstration of the U.S.’ continued commitment to Central and South America and the Caribbean. Chief Boatswain's Mate Joseph L. George's Bronze Star Ceremony

Chief Boatswain's Mate Joseph L. George was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement while serving aboard the repair ship USS Vestal (AR 4).

George, a second class petty officer at the time, saved the lives of six Sailors from the Battleship USS Arizona (BB 39). He survived the war and retired from the Navy in 1955, but passed away in 1996.

The Bronze Star Medal was presented by Rear Adm. Matthew J. Carter, deputy commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, to George's daughter, Joe Ann Taylor, on Dec. 7 during a ceremony at the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor.

Intense Storm Hits Ballpark!

This took place at Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA during a game between the Norfolk Tides and the Gwinnett Braves. (7/23/2011)
I could barely stand up, much less hold the camera still because of the strong wind pushing me back. I almost felt like I was one of those Weather Channel guys covering a hurricane.

They managed to squeeze in 1 inning with the Tides getting 1 base hit before the heavens opened up with torrential rain, lightning, and near-hurricane force winds.
