Beautiful Pitch Pines on the Pines golf course at the Seaview Resort
Here are some Pitch Pines and Shortleaf Pines on the Pines golf course at the Seaview Resort in Galloway Township, NJ. This on the extreme eastern edge of the Pine Barrens. This is within the Pinelands National Reserve. Sometime in the 1950s, White Pines, Hemlocks and Scotch Pines were planted all over this golf course. The hemlocks and scotch pines are nearly all dead and gone now. Very few have survived.
April 18 cedar swamp hike 1
This is a hike through a cedar swamp in the northeastern section of Hammonton Creek Wildlife Management Area (NJ Fish & Wildlife). The trail is actually on the map as Darmstadt Avenue, as it is a dirt extension of Darmstadt Avenue. This is in Mullica Township, Atlantic County, in the New Jersey Pine Barrens.
I start the hike off the trail, down in the swamp. Then I show you the Pitch Pine uplands just south of the swamp, and show you the transition zone, from Pitch Pine uplands to Cedar swamp. We follow the trail/road as far as I could go without boots.
On this aerial photo on Bing Maps ( ) you can see the entire swamp. The diagonal line going through the middle of it is our road/trail. The swamp actually extends north of the road that's called Weekstown Road on the map.

Rare Shark Feeding Frenzy in North Carolina
On Thursday, October 9 at around noon, while at a retreat at Cape Lookout National Seashore off the coast of North Carolina, the leaders of One Harbor Church witnessed a shark feeding frenzy. The men were out fishing for the evening’s dinner when they stumbled across more than 100 sharks attacking a school of blue fish. As seagulls and pelicans joined in on the meal, the men began to cast into the surf, catching fish without the use of bait. For more than five minutes, the sharks were observed swimming in and out of the surf, some of which became beached in the fury. Donnie Griggs, the cameraman who captured the footage, is an avid waterman who spearfishes, dives, swims and surfs at Cape Lookout often. We want it to be clear that Cape Lookout and the surrounding beaches of Eastern North Carolina are extremely safe for swimming. The presence of these sharks and large schools of fish is actually a sign of a very healthy ecosystem.

Bremen Ave., Egg Harbor City driving tour
This narrated tour starts at Alternate Route 561, Moss Mill Road, and runs northeast, past the Renault Winery, at which point the road becomes a dirt road. The dirt road crosses Indian Cabin Road and eventually goes through the old ghost town of Gloucester Furnace, where 3 modern houses can be seen. The tour ends at Route 624, Clark's Landing Road.
The winery and its golf course are technically within Galloway Township, But it's parking lot, hotel and restaurant are all within Egg Harbor City. This winery is the oldest continously operating winery in the United States.
