The Hare Krishna Temple At Chatsworth Near Durban
Upon entering the temple through the western entrance, you are greeted by His Divine Grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (The founder of The Hare Krishna Movement) on the left and Tulasi Devi (a sacred plant) on the right. As you pass through these domes, you enter into the octagonal temple hall that symbolises the transcendental association of the devotees. Here you are able to see the highest and most impressive tower of the building ? the main dome ? which is dedicated to Lord Krishna.
The interior of the temple room ? pictured opposite ? is elaborate. The floor is entirely covered with marble imported from Portugal, the central design being a large, intricate star made from pieces of marble of different colours. The ceiling consists of eight panels, each containing a huge reproduction, three metres high, of a painting depicting one of Krishna's pastimes. These paintings were done by the movement's followers in Italy and were reproduced using laser technology.
On the large beam that separates the walls from the ceiling panels are 35 smaller reproductions interspersed with Japanese mirrors. In the skylight at the top is an original painting of the gods Radha and Krishna in the spiritual world.
The frames for these pictures, as well as all the decorative work throughout the temple room, have floral patterns and are cast in polyester resin and treated to produce an effect of marble and gold. These pieces are combined with mirrors and wooden beading to create a sumptuous effect.
The chandeliers suspended at regular intervals between these decorations are designed from metal tubing made in South Africa and crystals from Italy. The effect is overwhelming and creates the impression of entering a higher world, beyond the realms of time and space.
The altar is an impressive feature on its own. Made from marble, wood, crystal and imitation gold, it is suspended from the ceiling stopping just short of the floor. The deities (Sri Sri Radha Radhanatha) represented on it are gorgeously bedecked with brightly coloured garments and shimmering jewels and crowns.
The temple building is surrounded by a moat of water that features two large fountains and rockeries. The walkways are surrounded by palm trees that were transplanted fully grown. Normally, mature trees like these do not survive transplantation, but in this case the trees took root and thrived.
The Temple of Understanding is also home to Govindas, a pure vegetarian restaurant and snack bar that serves a variety of delicacies.

The Hare Krishna temple in Chatsworth, Durban (formally known as the Sri Sri Radha Radhanath Temple of Understanding) is a fascinating place to visit. The temple has beautiful marble tiles, gilded ornaments and lavish statues, and is surrounded by peaceful gardens, and a beautiful koi pond.
Situated beneath the temple, on the ground floor is the Vegan / Vegetarian restaurant Govinda's which serves a range of super cheap meals including (on our visit) paneer chutney, dhal, split pea dhal and breyani.
There's even a strictly vegetarian wood fired pizza restaurant on the premises, which we will have to come back and try some day!
ISKCON South Africa Documentary on Srila Prabhupada & Hare Krishna
This documentary was produced at the time of the first Chatsworth Ratha-yatra in 2005. Herein are interviews with a few Hare Krishna devotees and they outline some of the history of ISKCON in South Africa. Most importantly we should not forget the importance of His Divine Grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada who brought the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha mantra to the West so that we could all take the opportunity to become free from birth, death, old age and disease. And also that we can become supremely happy in this lifetime. Krishna is God, it is that simple!
If you ever go to South Africa don't miss out on a visit to The Temple Of Understanding in Chatsworth, near Durban. Chatsworth is a maze, and driving yourself there is not recommended. It's better to visit the temple with someone who knows how to get around the area, or go on an organized tour. Open daily 10 am-8:30 pm. South Africa Adventures IV: Durban
The last stop on my South African Adventure was in the sub tropical city of Durban. Durban is located in the KwaZulu Natal province and is the third largest city in South Africa. While there, I visited Moses Mabida soccer stadium which was built for the 2010 world cup games where the world's tallest bungee swing exists. I had the pleasure of watching a few brave souls climbed to the top of the stadium a jump to the bottom.
After this excitement, I felt I needed a bit of Durban culture, so I went to a Hare Krishna temple to understand the spiritual practice that is growing throughout South Africa. I then visited Victoria Market, the Indian treasure house to buy some jewelry and spices.
My final experience in South Africa was in the Valley of a Thousand Hills where I watched an Ingoma performance, a traditional Zulu dance that performed by was captivating.

His Holiness Bhakti Brhat Bhagavata Swami, in his quest for spiritual understanding prior to becoming a full time member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness joined the Divine Life Society were he studied under Sri Swami Sahajananda. However due to his constant inquest into spiritual understanding Sri Swami Sahajananda told him that he was a missionary and should join the Hare Krishna Movement. He acquired a set of the Srimad Bhagavatam and several other books written by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness and was deeply moved by these sublime teachings. This prompted him to become a full time member of The International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Brihat Mridanga Dasa, his former name, was awarded the renounced order of sannyasa by ISKCON guru Giriraja Swami recently, and will henceforth be known as Bhakti Brihat Bhagavata Swami. The initiation ceremony, held on December 24, 2009 at the Sri Sri Radha-Radhanath Temple of Understanding in Durban, South Africa.
Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple Project Construction
The Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple of Devotion & Understanding is under construction on a 1 acre site of a 14 acre multireligious precinct at Bandar Seberang Jaya, Penang, Malaysia. The project began with the purchase of the 1acre plot in 2001. And in 19 November 2004 the 1st Phase Bhaktivedanta Cultural Centre was officially opened. In March 2009 approvals were given both for Block B (Temple proper) and Block C (Multipurpose Hall). On April 27 2009 the ground breaking ceremony for the project was held.
