I enjoy visiting factory tours across the country. Not only can you see how some of your favorite products are made, but you can witness a vibrant workplace that employs many people.
In this video I talk about The Factory Tour Capital of The World, York, PA (that's what they call it) and my experiences visiting there. One of the main factory tours in the area is the Harley-Davidson Factory Tour at their Vehicle Operations Center. I highly recommend that you pay the extra for the steel toe tour and see a lot more.

Harley-Davidson manufacturing plant and tour, York, PA
A tour of the Vaughn L. Beals Tour Center at the Harley-Davidson Vehicle Operations plant. It is the largest Harley-Davidson manufacturing facility.
It's where the Touring, Softail®, CVO and Trike models as well as limited production and factory-custom motorcycles are assembled. They also manufacture parts like frames, fuel tanks, and fenders.
It is in York, Pennsylvania, the Factory Tour Capital of the World.
Photographs are not allowed inside the production area, but may be taken in the visitor display area that has exhibits about the factory's manufacturing and assembly processes. It's where visitors can sit on current production motorcycles and shop for Harley-Davidson souvenirs
It employs about half the company's production workforce. This facility is on more than 230 acres and has over 1.5 million square feet of covered space.

Harley-Davidson Kansas City Plant - What Happened Anyway?! Here's the scoop:
Friday May 24th was the last day of production at the Harley-Davidson’s factory in Kansas City, Missouri. Closure was announced earlier in the year and but the shutdown process began as early as August of 2018. The factory was built in the late 1990’s at a cost of approximately $85 million dollars. At the time, thirty other communities were competing to have Harley-Davidson built in their towns, offering tens of millions in state tax abatement and other incentives. Twenty two years later, it’s been shut down, and about 800 employees are out of jobs.

When I was at Hersey Pa my wife suggested a trip to Harley Davidson Factory in York Pa. What a cool place to visit! My entire family enjoyed the tour. Pictures and video are prohibited inside the factory but they did allow pictures of the visiting center and it's contents.
If your near York Pa make a stop at the Harley factory and take the tour, I think you will enjoy it.

Harley Betrays Workers, Sends Jobs To Thailand After Getting Massive Tax Cuts

In September 2017, House Speaker Paul Ryan traveled to a Harley-Davidson plant in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, to tout the Republican tax bill, which President Trump would sign later that year. “Tax reform can put American manufacturers and American companies like Harley-Davidson on a much better footing to compete in the global economy and keep jobs here in America,” Ryan told workers and company leaders.
Four months later and 500 miles away in Kansas City, Missouri, 800 workers at a Harley-Davidson factory were told they would lose their jobs when the plant closed its doors and shifted operations to a facility in York, Pennsylvania — a net loss of 350 jobs. Workers and union representatives say they didn’t see it coming.
Just days later, the company announced a dividend increase and a stock buyback plan to repurchase 15 million of its shares, valued at about $696 million.

York, Pennsylvania (Photo Tour)
York is a marvelously intact and well-preserved historic city, which seems to have escaped the urban renewal era unscathed. It is also one of the more significant small cities in America, having served as capital of the Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War. Between 1800-1840, it ranked within the 100 most populous urban centers in the United States. There is a great collection of colonial and Victorian architecture in the city, and most of it appears to be beautifully maintained.

I've been driving through York for over 20 years and never knew this gem of a site was there. I'm going back for the Steel Toe Tour, hopefully later this year.

First Harley Davidson Assembled At York, Pa Factory - 1973 XLCH Sportster!
A piece of history! Have a look and hear the story behind the first Harley-Davidson ever assembled in the York, Pa. factory. After Harley moved its production from Milwaukee to York, this XLCH Sportster was assembled on February 2nd, 1973. Second and current owner Mark Duell bought it in 1975 and did not know the special history behind this machine until 2011. He says an appraiser was unable to give him a value because there are no comparables. He hopes to put this bike in a museum. Check it out!
