Military funeral for WWII veteran, Phil Cascio, Sr., Greenville, Mississippi
Partial video of Military funeral for U.S. Air Force World War II veteran, Phil Cascio, Sr., Greenville, Mississippi, USA. He was only a few days from celebrating his 100th birthday. He joined the Air Force in March 1942 as a student at the University of Mississippi. He was a native of Leland, Mississippi.
He spent twenty eight months in a German POW Camp. He flew B17 bomber with the Eighth Air Force, 303rd Bombardment Group H, Squadron 358 who were known as Hell’s Angels. He was a staff sergeant and turret gunner who had flown 16 missions.
On his 17th mission, his plane was nearing safety in England when they made the decision to turn around to help a fellow Squadron plane under attack by German ME-109 fighter planes. His plane, SPOOK, was shot down on February 16, 1943 with only 3 of 10 members surviving. They spent 16 hours in the English Channel in a rubber dingy being strafed by German planes. Eventually they landed at the coast of Brest, France and were captured by Germans the next day. He was a POW in the Bastille in Paris, in Frankfurt, Germany, and at Stalag 3B, 7A, and 17B. Coincidentally, he met members of the distressed bomber they tried to help who were also captured.
He returned to Greenville, Mississippi and became a very successful businessman and family man. He was married in July 1947 to Cherry Ferretti Cascio, a native of Shaw, Mississippi who passed away July 2003.
God Bless Phil Cascio, Sr. and THE GREATEST GENERATION!
