Hartbeespoort Dam (also known as Harties) is an arch type dam situated in the North West Province of South Africa. Roughly 45 minutes' drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, surrounded by the beautiful Magaliesberg mountain range, Hartbeespoort Dam, or Harties to locals, has become a hive of activity and is a very popular weekend getaway for the two cities.Harties is the perfect holiday destination for the whole family with plenty to do for the kids or if a romantic getaway is what you are looking for, it has plenty to choose from that will leave you feeling great. The spectacular view of the Magaliesberg Mountains is breath taking and is best savoured at sunset whilst on a leisurely boat cruise.Explore and discover the scenic beauty, entertaining attractions, fun activities and places of interest of Hartbeespoort Dam.

Hey everyone! Last week I went to the North-West province of South Africa. I visited a town called Hartbeespoort, which locals call Harties for short. It's a resort town just an hour's drive from Johannesburg, and is very popular for short getaways. There are so many things to do there. Time and money are likely to be your only constraints!
These were my top four experiences! I'll be sharing my blog post link with details on how to plan for a day trip to Harties!

More about the dam:
Hartbeespoort Dam (also known as Harties) is an arch type dam situated in the North West Province of South Africa. It lies in a valley to the south of the Magaliesberg mountain range and north of the Witwatersberg mountain range, about 35 kilometers west of Pretoria. The name of the dam means pass of the hartebeest (a species of antelope) in Afrikaans. This poort in the Magaliesberg was a popular spot for hunters, where they cornered and shot the hartebeest.The dam was originally designed for irrigation, which is currently its primary use, as well as for domestic and industrial use. The dam has suffered from a hypertrophic state since the early 1970s. Mismanagement of waste water treatment from urban zones within the Hartbeespoort Dam catchment area is largely to blame, having distorted the food web with over 280 tons of phosphate and nitrate deposits.
The town of Hartbeespoort is situated close to the dam wall and the villages of Kosmos, Melodie, Ifafi, Meerhof and The Coves, Pecanwood, Westlake and several other estates can be found alongside its shores. The town of Schoemansville was named after General Hendrik Schoeman, owner of the land during the 19th century.

The Harties Cableway offers visitors panoramic views of the beautiful Magaliesberg, Hartbeespoort Dam and surrounding areas, as well as excellent recreational and educational facilities.The cable-way also became famous as an ideal paragliding destination.There's lots to do at the base station and at the top. Kids can wander along the Dassie Loop walkway, where educational placards describe points of interest seen from the top, or play in the KidZone, while parents enjoy some much-needed rest.Harties Cableway is a very popular hiking area, where you can spot many of natures wonderful creatures or sit back, relax and listen to the sound of the many birds around.Restaurants, express food stalls and a bar are all on site, as are picturesque seating areas and bomas. The Magaliesberg Mountains are home to endangered vultures, chances are you may see these magnificent birds in flight over the valleys.
