Good Living Marketplace in Hartsville South Carolina ~ March, 2009
The Good Living Marketplace this month was great fun in Hartsville, SC! The Marketplace is held the first Saturday of the month from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm in Cargill Way (10:00am in the colder winter months!) and this month featured 62 vendors, Artists of the Cotton Trail, a Hula Hoop contest winner with 1500 revolutions, pet adoptions from the Darlington County Humane Society, delicious food and temperatures that soared to 80 degrees.

We visited EdVenture Children's Museum in Columbia, SC! We got caught up in USC Football traffic on the way, but all the kids had a great time exploring all the exhibits!

After completing my delivery in Hartsville I caught up with SCRF 1603 as she rushes back to to the yard in Floyds. This is the local job that works the Sonoco paperboard mill on the outskirts of town. For those unfamiliar with the area Hartsville once hosted three junctions. The 1st goes to Bishopville, up until the 70's the line continued to Sumter. The 2nd went to McBee though CSX still operates the line up to the Robinson Power Plant. The 3rd went to Society Hill then to Cheraw. The line once continued on to Wadesboro before it too was ripped up in the 70's.

I caught this train while I was in Hartsville, S.C. The train was headed to Floyd, S.C. I barely caught this train, but T-MAN The Trainman is the master when it comes to catching trains!!

Of Earth and Cotton_Part 2
Of Earth and Cotton is a series of museum installations that traveled for four years (1994-8), evolving at it crossed the southern United States. Artist Jackie Brookner followed the westward migration of the cotton belt, speaking with people who farmed and picked cotton by hand in the 1930's and 40's. This video by Terry Iacuzzo documents these conversations.
As people spoke about their memories, Brookner sat on the ground sculpting portraits of their feet out of soil from nearby cotton fields. The portraits became the focal points of the installations where they rested on 60 tons of soil or 2500 pounds of ginned cotton. Made of many different colors and textures of soil, the portraits were a metaphor for all the soils that were worked and the diversity of peoples who worked them.
The installations were accompanied by forty FSA photographs, commissioned by the US Government in the 1930's, depicting living and working conditions of cotton farmers during the Depression.

South Carolina Cotton Museum in Bishopville, South Carolina
The South Carolina Cotton Museum is a Blue Star Museum. The South Carolina Cotton Museum is a major interpretive site preserving the legacy of cotton and rural life. Exhibits of farm and manufacturing equipment spanning two centuries allow visitors to experience the cotton culture and way of life from the field to the factory. Additionally, it is the first stop on the South Carolina Cotton Trail and provides information on those and other area attractions.
